Alan’s Story

Site created on July 5, 2018

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. I am using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. Al and I appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting - Lois B.
To recap Al's story thus far. . . in September 2014, Al began a new chapter of his life when he was diagnosed with medullary thyroid cancer.  He began treatment with Dr. Gilbert Farreau at the Froedhert Hospital Hope Cancer Center.  The name  'Hope' is so appropriate,  because it is exactly what it gave us, hope for a relatively normal life where cancer did not dominate our thoughts.  We cannot begin to express our gratitude for the compassionate and expert care given by Dr. Fareau and Nurse Sandy Todd and would unhesitatingly recommend the center to anyone in need of cancer treatment.  We are so fortunate to have this best of class hospital in our community.
Directed oral chemotherapy medication allowed Al to continue his work and leisure pursuits with only moderate side effects.  Al continued working in his lifetime dream job as a Six Sigma Black Belt at Rockwell Automation until his retirement at age 65 in January 2017.  We celebrated retirement with a seven week trip to Arizona and Hawaii,  including a visit to our daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Charlie, working at the Grand Canyon.  Al continued to be active in his leisure pursuits, caring for his indoor and outdoor birds, gardening, travel, extensive reading and interest in world affairs, fantasy football and the Green Bay Packers.
In May of 2018, all of this changed relatively suddenly when Al began experiencing intense stomach pain, rapidly declining stamina and lack of appetite.  A week long investigative hospital stay and follow up tests revealed that the cancer had spread throughout Al's body.  The intense pain subsided but several weeks of medication attempting to improve his stamina failed as Al continued to grow weaker.  So now, the active cancer treatment stage is ending and we begin a new chapter, as Al enters home hospice care through Seasons Hospice and Palliative Care.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Al & Lois Blasinski

During the last month of Al's life, we worked together on a 'Gratitude list'.  The list is far too long to share in its entirety, but here's a summary:
  • our family and friends, with us to share the smiles and be there for us in tough times
  • our pets that brought joy into our lives and the wildlife that visited our backyard, especially our resident cardinals
  • our home, a place to relax, renew, raise our family and enjoy the beauty outside our windows
  • gardening, especially tomatoes and roses, and the trees that we planted and watch mature
  • learning from good books to enlarge our world and make us think
  • travel, which enlarged our horizons and experience God's beauty
  • good eats. . . Al's famous chili, burgers, pizza and chocolate shakes and that we never went hungry
  • our faith, parish family, and choir which enhanced liturgy
  • the Packers
  • the excellent medical care Al received, especially from the dedicated staff at the Froedhert Cancer Center and Seasons Hospice
  • making a contribution at Rockwell
  • fireworks, blizzards and thunderstorms
  • living in freedom in the best country in the world
I am especially grateful for the 35+ years that Al and I shared our paths together.  The list of shared memories is too long to recount here, but during the past month, we reflected on the wonderful gift that we were given to share these final days together.  We prayed to be at peace, and we were granted this.  We prayed that we would be together in Al's final moments, and this too we were granted.  It was a very, very special gift to be holding Al in my arms, feeling his life ebb away, with Matthew and Julie by our sides.  I reminded Al that he was crossing the threshold into a new and better place.  Whether he watches over me from that place no one knows, but he will remain dear in my heart for the rest of my life.
