I ran accross this web site while looking for info on orbital rhabdo. I guess you could say I'm a "new mom" to this, my son Lance, age 6, was diagnosed January 18th 2006. Stephen's story was so similar it was like reading my own journal. Thank you for sharing your experiences on this web site. It is an inspriation to know that Joseph is doing well even though at times in the beginning it seemed like a mom (or child) couldn't make it through the day...just like I felt a couple weeks ago. (The jaw pain, the abdominal pain, the emla not working, etc)

Your journal is just what I needed to see today. My 7 year old Daughter, Gabriella, is 6 months into treatment for Rhabdo. Her prognosis is good. However, it always helps to read about somebody who's cured.

I just read your history with rhabdo and it brought back memories. This is just an encouragement note. We dealt with this back in 1975 with our then 3 year old. Matt lost his right eye to the disease but today he's 33, he's been married for almost 13 years and has two beautiful children. There is life after rhabdo and it's good. God Bless!

My son Benjamin is a 2 year cancer survivor of Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcoma himself. Benjamin is 7 years old now and is doing great except for his sinus problems from Radiation. He was diagnosed head and neck August 1, 2002 and like yourself had to undergo 42 weeks of chemo and 31 rounds of radiation. Well it sounds like you did evrything you were supposed to do, congratulation and you take care.... If you would like to see him his site is www.caringbridge.org/oh/benjamin.

Hi, my name is Amanda Phipps and I met Lisa Faulkenbury and her son James at the oncologists office this week. My son was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma in his jaw 2 weeks ago(seems like a lifetime). She gave me you rsite, and I would love to speak with you if you ever get the time. I know it is hard to find the time, especially with kids. I have 3 under the age of 5. I am so glad that everything is going well and that your scans have come back clear. God bless you and your family.

Just had a few minutes to peruse your website for the first time after meeting this family, and most specifically the "mom". I was struck by the awesome grace of God in your lives to go through this illness with such humor, insight, and even humility. All things are not good, but all things work for good...and there will be incredible insights and sensitivities worked in all of your lives, that unfortunately don't seem to come any other way than through suffering - Phillip Yancey calls it "The Gift of Pain" - and only God's grace can make you recognize it as such. I look forward to reading more. Thank you for sharing!

I know you could have read the Ranger book, but I wanted to have you sit by me for a while. Let's get together again at Papa and Dane's camper - we had so much fun and the food is always good. Remember to bring your net next time. I saw where Michael Young hit a grand slam the other night.
God Bless Monica, Steve, Savannah and Stephen.

Q: What do you get if you cross a skunk with a bear?
A: Winnie the Pooh!

Q: Why do bears have fur coats?
A: Because they'd look stupid in anoraks!

Lots of love and big…

The car looks awful, like you said. Hey, Stephen, I am a quiet prayer too (Baptist) but sometimes you just got to make sure you have God's full attention!!! Glad you all are going to be okay.....
Jordan is doing pretty good. He has missed school a couple of days so far this week, combination of nausea, headaches, and fatigue!!
Was nice to see you at the Rangers game on Saturday!! We found out on Monday when we went to our local pediatrician for bloodwork, that the doctor was at the game as well. He didn't realize Jordan would be presented on the field or that we would even be there for that matter. He was so excited about it!!

Dear Stephen, Monica, Steve, and Savannah,

Your note on Connor Hunley's website, remnded me to pop in and sign the guest book again. Stephen and Savannah look nice in the back to school picture. Kids in New York don't return to school until after Labor Day, with most schools around here starting on Wednesday, September 8. Of course you get out, in the spring, three or four weeks ahead of us.

I hope Stephen is doing well medically and that both he, and Savannah, are doing well in school.

Grace and peace,

Dear Stephen, Monica, Steve, and Savannah,

I have been praying for Connor Hunley, a nine and a half year old boy with Rhabdomyosarcoma, for about a year. Gradually, I have been reading about other children and signing their guest books. I found this website through Dustin's site, tonight.

The picture on the main page, of Stephen and Matthew, is great! I am sure they have a lot of fun in the tree house. I also liked the picture of Stephen with his camp counselors. They look like fun guys to know.

I was almost in shock, as I read about your accident, until I got to the part about praying aloud and how Stephen thought if his mother had prayed silently that she wouldn't have gotten a mouthful of glass. Thank God for his mercy and protection!

God bless you all! I will try to visit this site again.

Grace and peace,

~Colette~

Connor is having a rough sumer. Anyone interested in reading his story, or signing his guest book, can do so at http://www.caringbridge.org/tn/connorhunley

Hello, i was watching a couple of new records being set at the Olympics today, so thought i would look up some slightly stranger ones instead of some jokes.

Here's a couple;

Most spoons balanced on the face
Tim Johnston (USA) (b. 1 January 1992), was able to balance on his face (one on each ear, two on each cheek, three on his chin, two on his lips, one on his nose and three on his forehead) and balance them for 30 seconds at on May 28, 2004.

British pub landlord Garry Turner clipped 153 ordinary wooden clothes pegs on his face at the WH Smith bookshop in York, Yorkshire, UK, on September 28, 2002

We are so glad that you guys are okay. It's obvious that the Lord has a special hand of blessing on you for continuing to protect your family. We will pray for you all to heal quickly. Stephen, we knew how you managed to deal with your treatment so well, God's mercy--but your sense of humor must have played a big role too!! Weston's mom, Sherrie, was so tickled about you admonishing your mom that praying quietly would have prevented glass in her mouth, that she called me down in Austin to tell me the story!! We are Baptists, so we used to practice only quietly praying, but over the last several months, we find calling to the Lord out loud in moments of need is so powerful. My husband has been jokingly calling us Bapticostals! We look forward to your next update. Bless you all.

Hey to the Rhodes family,
I 'stopped' by to say a few words after linking from another site. I had to laugh when I read the info about camp. I've been a camp counselor for almost 30 years and those stories don't surprise me at all. I heard once that a young camper was heard to say on the last day of camp, "So that's where the shower house is"! Sounds a little far fetched, but you wonder.
Hope all are doing well at your house. Stephen, You are a handsome young guy and I hope you are enjoying your summer.

Stephen, Did I read you are getting haircuts!! Sierra can't wait for the need to get a haircut. She has about 3/4 of an inch of hair and I actually accidently pulled it last night. She hasn't felt that in a year. Congratulations on doing so well. You must be soaking up all the great things that you missed out on this past year.
Monica--I "get" what you are saying, I know what you mean. I thought I would be over thinking of cancer at this point. This is our new club, "Moms of Cancer Survivors." With this new job, we are still on guard. I am learning to live this part of the journey. Advice that was given to me: "Live life everyday, only worry the day of the scans. Don't get bogged down between scans or we will forget to enjoy life." Here's to the milestones...like haircuts :)

Glad to hear everything seems to be going well, it is about time!! I know all of you are ready for summer to get here and school to be out. Will only has two more days of school and I am already trying to think of things to do. He wakes up every morning and ask if he has school and I think by June I will be pulling my hair out! Luckly, we have lots of places to go and maybe even a trip to Cooper would help the summer go by. Sounds like baseball is keeping you busy and I know you will hit the ball out of the park soon. You are lucky to have a good friend like Nick, he sounds like a nice guy and maybe you and Nick can practice your swing this summer.

We are so glad that Stephen only has a couple more to go. My dad is taking radiation for his prostate cancer ... he cannot imagine what the little ones have to go through with chemo. We will be praying for her and finding some way to help out as well. See you at school ...

At first, to say Stephen would have to take treatments for a year - sounded endless. You have all been so brave thru all of this. The pig mask was very cute. Rhodes,

The snow looks great. I was planning a visit to Cooper and going to leave today, Saturday, Feb. 14th, but decided that I better wait until tomorrow. I don't want to hit any ice with my precious cargo, Will and Brad, in the van. Maybe the snow will still be there tomorrow when I come in. Will and Brad would love to play in the snow and chances are if we live in Houston forever they will never see it. If Houston got three inches of snow I think the city would shutdown!! We are glad to hear that the end of all the treatments are near. I know this has been hard for all of you but now there is light at the end of the tunnel.
Enjoy the snow and eat some snow ice cream for me. Daddy would make snow ice cream when I was little and couldn't wait to eat it. I guess Blue Bell will have to do for the Morgan house..

See you at Easter,

Monica,

Eric's handwriting also stinks. It has definitely gotten worse since the vincristine! He says it hurts his hand to write much, so usually I do the writing for homework. Unfortunately, I can't do that for the cursive practice sheets. Oh well, in the grand scheme of things, handwriting is pretty minimal, huh? I'm more worried about healthy and happy.

Take care!

Hope you have a great birthday Savannah. I am not sure what day your birthday is but I know it is around Chlesea's birthday, February 8th. I think Chelsea will be eleven this year. Great to hear all is well. Stephen, I liked your picture from last week - but - I love your school picture this week. You look so handsome. As far as Savannah, she has grown into a beautiful young lady. The first picture I saw of her, she was laying in Steve's hand. Her little legs were drawn up and from her head to her bottom, she was the length of Steve's hand. Almost each time I see Steve I look and his hand and think of that picture. Guess all of you have had 2 miracles in your life - Praise The Lord. Happy belated birthday to you, Monica. We love you all and have a happy week.

Rhodes Clan,

Sorry to hear you got sick after your chemo. I hope your veggie soup made you feel better. I like the picture of the deer and hunter Stephen. We have been seeing a few deer down from our house, yes, deer live in Houston!! Will thinks we need one for a pet and dosen't understand why we can't take it home. We are doing good to keep our dog Maggie in one piece since Brad likes to hear the noise she makes when he grabs her ear. Thank goodness she is a very sweet dog and never bites at the boys. Maggie has been hiding since Bradley is walking now and is very strong. Brad's nickname is Moose and with good reason, he can pull Maggie off the couch with about three good tugs and then the fun has just begun.. Speaking of Moose, he just woke up from a nap.

We hope you are all doing well and we will see you Thanksgiving.

Glad to hear last week went well. Sorry to hear about the "new nurse" and the bad experience. Maybe, you will have the nurse you are used to next time. Has Dane got a deer yet? Colton and Rodney went youth week-end. On Sat. they walked up on 5 deer, ran them off and did not see anymore Sat. or Sunday when they went back. Robert & I got Colton a 30/30. This is his first year to have his own gun. Sure hope he gets a deer. Savannah, stay sweet - hope all is going well with you. We love you all.

We are so happy you had a good time on your trip. Will loved the picture of Stephen getting slimed, now he wants to be slimed!!
Sorry to hear about the flu shot. I get my shot on Monday and Will and Brad get shots in a few weeks but I think we will be glad we got them. Houston/Katy is having a flu outbreak already and one high school last week had 400 students miss in one day.

We hope to see soon.

Stephen,

Hi! I'm Kasey, and my son, Eric, also has Rhabdomyosarcoma. You probably have already seen Eric's Caring Bridge page (your mom put an entry in the guestbook). http://www.caringbridge.org/mn/ericdakota

I read your web page quite a lot and read it to Eric also. It is interesting to read about your treatments and see how they are slightly different than Eric's.

Eric is going to start the 3rd grade on Sept 2 and is a little nervous. Eric also has a sister, Katy, who is starting 5th grade this year.

The weather is supposed to start cooling off here in Minnesota later this week. We are looking forward to the fall! Is there anything you'd like for us to send you from Minnesota? A moose? How about a Timberwolf? Or a Viking?

Keep up the great job of being so strong and brave!

Savannah, Ashley is going to be in band. She wants to play the clarinet, also. I think we have found her one. Hi Monica, we met today at Children's. Just wanted to say I hope Stephen finally got something to eat! Kylie's tests went well, we don't have the results yet, so say a prayer. Have been crying and laughing as I view your history. It sounds so much like what we went through with my son Ty. He was Dx. in March 02, at age 7,he was in first grade, with paratesticular Botryoid Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcoma. He is in remission as of March 03. He, thank God,did not have to go thru radiation. Your latest experience is all so familiar at wal-mart. Of course it didn't help that his make a wish was a shopping spree at Toy works. Every week after his chemo. treatments he used his gift card to buy a new toy. Yes, I could open a toy store as they say on squirreltales. Sorry it has taken me a while to post to your site. Trying to get use to computers. You have been in our thoughts and prayers. Fight the good fight!!! God Bless!

Dear sweet Stephen,
My name is Lisa and your mom and I have become good friends at school. She is such a strong and caring person. You are very lucky to have her for a mom. She talks about you and Savannah all of the time. Her eyes sparkle when she says your names. I can hear the love in her voice and see it in her eyes. Stephen, you are such a brave little guy to have gone through all that you have so far. But I have no doubt in my mind that through the power of prayer and faith in God, you will get through this whole mess. And Savannah, I know how hard it is for you too and I will also be praying for you. I love the pictures on the site and my kids love your goat. They are begging for me to get them one. Your puppy dog is too cute. Take care and stay strong.

hello agin rhodes family, tia looks like a good swimmer. it's to hot for anything else. you need to go to slitterbaghn, it's a blast. the old park is mostly shaded, and the water is nice and cool. the tube rides are a lot of fun too, but the real action is at the wave pool. well i guess i need to go. i don't have a computer at home, but i'll keep checking in as much as i can. hope you have good summer, come and see us at maxey when you get a chance. me and janet are praying that your treatments go well.

Hello. I was reading your original posts and it wrenched my heart. It has been 7 years for my family since the terrible day July 24th 96 that our son Brandon 's rhabdo was discovered. As I was reading I could feel it like it was yesterday and had to reach out to tell you, miracles happen, kids survive and life does return to normal after rhabdo invades your child and family. Brandon was almost 12 at diagnosis of alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma ( I still chew on that word)stage 4 metastatic. Today he is turning 19 (in 3 weeks),is healthy, strong, a master mechanic apprentice and you would never know he was ever sick one day in his life. We have lived through rhabdo and all it's gut wrenching, horrific moments and I pray that this particular part of your journey goes by fast without incidence and you will be like us very soon looking back on it as though it was just a bad dream.
I was thrilled to read Stephen's cancer had not spread beyond the eye, what wonderfull news. HURRAY !!
May God bless your family and make this as easy to bear as possible. Have faith it can be beaten, don'y listen to stats, odds mean nothing to your individual case... Keep up the fight it can be won .
Sandra
ps this is my son's site if you want to have a look. and you might want to check out acor Rhabdokids it is a group of parents with rhabdo kids and a few adults too with it. More than a hundred from all over the world. A great group with so much love, faith, and resourses.hope to see you join us. There are many in the same part of treatment and a few of us still hang around that have had a child in remmision many years like us.
Email me anytime if you wish.

Stephen's radiation and chemo has changed his taste and smell capability . Well, yesterday we were on the way home when I said to Stephen "you dont drink Dr Pepper at all any more do you" then I said do you still smell like you did?that was followed by a moment of silence then Stephen leaned forward and said "DAD what did I used to smell like?" I thought I would die!!!! In the future I will make myself plainer.

Glad to hear you are back in school. Stephen looked great at Wal-Mart the other day. I told Ashley he asked where she was. She smiled and said she is ready to see him. I am glad that you and Stephen seem to be your old selves...arguing about the Dragon Ball Z games... and of course Savannah was there to keep the peace !! You all looked great and I hope things continue to go as well as they have been. I would like to be invited for watermelon, however, I think I will bring my own fork !!

Stehen, Savannah, Monica & Steve,
So glad to hear all is going well. Heard you met my boss, Sherrie Boyd, yesterday at Tamolly's. She is a sweet lady and as she told you, you are on their pray list at her church. She goes to church with Aunt Sue. What I would like to know is how do I get on Stephen's pray list? Heard about Nannie Wanda and the miracle she received. If you have room, put Uncle Robert and me on you list. Hope all of you have a wonderful week and we love you all.

Hi Stephen!
My friend Sierra is also fighting Rhabdo right now. I used to be her preschool teacher. Your mom was nice enough to sign her guest book so I wanted to sign yours and wish you the best too. I really like the picture of you with your family in the pool. Sierra just got a port Wednesday so she will be swimming again in about a week and she can't wait!
Good luck to you and your family. I hope Nannie Wanda is doing even better now.

Hi Stephen
When I adopted your site I hadn't even looked at the pictures. The really funny thing is that when I was your age and my dad was your dads age, they could have passed for twins. Everybody that I have shown the picture to agrees with me. How funny, out of all the sites to adopt that I would choose this one. Must be sign that I should choose you. Hope you are still having a good week. Summer can be hot down your way. Staying in and eating ice cream sounds like a good way to stay cool. Take good care of your dad as he loves you a lot!

Hey Monica and family

Seems like things are going well. I wanted to see you and Stephen so bad at Blake's party, and we were planning on coming, until Saturday about 3:00. We were camping at the lake and some family was coming in from Houston so I hated to leave. Ashley was very disappointed that she didn't get to come. She says her prayers for Stephen each night. It's really neat how much those kids in that class grew to love one another. She is looking forward to 1st grade with Mrs. Sanders. Tell Steve hello and take care. Let us know if you need anything. All Our Love!!

Hi Steven family. Wow you sure have been thru a lot already. Its such a shame, and I hate coming across new Caringbridge sites, as it just means another kid going thru something no kid should ever have to deal with. My son has leukemia (ALL) so I kind of know the toll it takes on the whole family emotionally, financially and spiritually. Its also very hard on any siblings too, they dont understand why its all happening (and how do we explain when we dont understand ourselves!)

I love the pictures of you on the other site, you are one handsome devil!!! Well, I hope your being added to the Adopt a Kids Site brings you more visitors and more thoughts & prayers. We will be thinking of you! I'll email you as soon as your site's "adopted"

You have probably seen this but I thought it was worth passing on to you. Keep the faith.
If God had a refrigerator, your picture would be on it. If He had a wallet, your photo would be in it. He sends you flowers every spring. He sends you a sunrise every morning. Face it, Stephen - He is crazy about you!

This is to the parents of Stephen. My name is Erin and I am a respiratory therapist in the USAF. I am currently deployed overseas in Qatar. I have been here now for 66 days. I recieved this e-mail from my dad's girlfriend and I really feel for Stephen and your whole family. I work in an ICU back home and I see sick children quite a bit. I would love to do anything to make him as happy as possible. I was thinking that maybe you could give me your mailing address. I would love to send him some souvenirs from my deployment site. I know it seems silly, but I would just love to be able to give something to him. If I could help to put a smile on his face then that would make me happy. I just think children are great.
Well, I am going to go for now. I hope you see this. If you send me your e-mail, then I could send you a picture of myself. You can tell Stephen that he has his own personal Airman in the United States Air Force. He can adopt me and I will write him and send him gifts. :)
Well, you can think about it. I thought it would be nice.

Let His presence settle into your bones, and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise and love. It is there for each and every one of you." Stephen, you hang in there, sweetie, you are one brave, tough young man. Always remember, "Jesus loves me, this I know...Little ones to Him belong, they are weak, but He is Strong." May each of you rely on the Lord's strength, let Him carry your load. Our prayers are with you.

Stephen, I am a friend of Carolyn Clark. I just want you to know that I will be praying for you and also remember that you are a child of God and He will take care of you when things seem bad just remember He is right there and has you wrapped in His Loving Arms. If you don't mind I would like to give this to my Mother who is a wonderful lady who loves God with all of her heart and she has always prayed for me and those prayers were always answered.
