I had to be taught many things that come naturally to others such as making eye contact and interpreting body language. Controlling outbursts also too years of work. I am now in my 3rd year of psychology in university. I still face challenges but am working towards independence. It sounds as if you have a lot of information to absorb. I know you're just the person to do it and make the best decisions for Emma. I love the fact that there are some books for Madison, too, to help her feel included and understood. I often wish my oldest granddaughter, Jill, had such books available as she watches her little sister Emmi's many therapies and developments.

I just wanted to stop by and say HI. I am so sorry you have been so sick. It is so hard to be out of commision when we know our children need us for their medical problems. Sky has been very sick for this past week including a visit to the ER. We are still trying to avoid a hospitalization. I hope you are feeling better soon. Oh and the Trileptal is working well for Sky's seizures. She has only had a few since starting the meds. Of course one of these was in the ER this past weekend.

Lauren, you did a great job on the page. I am not very good on adding stuff to caringbridge, I am slowly learning. I just wanted to check up on you guys and see how Emma was doing. Rhyan is doing very well. The G-tube and fundo, have been a life saver. Rhyan although almost 7, still will only eat certain foods. (Tator tots and Guacamole) And she is very specific to how it is made...I am thinking that we might need to put her in therapy to help her understand the importance of eating the right foods for her medical condition. Reading your site today, gave me insight into that. Hope you all have a blessed weekend. God Bless Theresa Pope

I love Emma's new page:). I'm not sure if I have posted here before...I think that I have, but I have followed your Emma for a long time. I also have an Emma that has severe oral motor issues and delayed speech....along with other things:). I'm sure that they have done this, but do you thicken Emma's liquids? My Emma was aspirating...minimally....we thickened liquids...and she has done fabulous. We use Simply Thick. It is clear and tasteless....it just thickens it a bit. I just wanted to stop by and say HI. The page looks great! Sky has been on the Trileptal for 3 weeks now and she seems to be doing well. She had one seizure the week after she started it, but that is all I have seen.
I hope all is well with you and the family. I understand how hard it is to update. Sometimes over a month goes by before I update Sky's, but it is important to do at least once in awhile to keep everyone current.

I'm so glad to know that the results of the kidney tests were good. That's great about the drawing. I'm sure you probably already know this, but there's an IQ test for preschoolers, something like the Draw-a-Man test, and she's not supposed to be able to draw that complete a person at her age yet!

Sorry it has been awhile since I last checked in, but work has been very busy. I haven't updated Sky's page in over a month now. I hope all is well with you all. We will be seeing Sky's geneticist on Thursday and I am sure we will be discussing a possible muscle biopsy. Sorry to hear Em's siezures have been a pill. Sky's were bad in November, but the past two months she has been doing pretty good. If we decide on the muscle biopsy in Atlanta I would like to talk with you about the whole thing. Sky will have to go to the ICU for the first 24 hours because of her breathing problems, but I think the rest will be the same as Emma's.
Well, I better get back to work. You are all in my prayers.

It sounds as if you guys had a great Christmas. Emmi was a bit confused by the whole thing, but loved it. We celebrated with several different family groups, so Emmi woke up to presents mulitple times. Afterward, she checked the tree often to see if presents would magically appear!

I wanted to wish you and the girls a Merry Christmas. I heard on the news that we might get a few flakes of snow, although that might be a bit anticlimatic after the late November ice and the little bit of snow we got then. I hope both girls are well enough to enjoy the holiday.
There's a chance that Emmi might come home with us for a few days after Christmas. I'll try to let you know if that happens. I just spent four days with her and found that she's either way ahead of me on signing or else she's making up her own signs to fool her grammie. When she didn't want me to know that she was "talking back" to me, she would put her hand behind a door or something and sign "no" over and over, her face completely blank. Hilarious.

It's times like these, when I read about Morgan...or receive an email about Timothy Luke a little one year old we know with Ds and a horrible heart defect that seems unrepairable...that I grow weary and wish I could go back to those innocent days before...before I knew any children who are ill and are facing death. But then, I wouldn't know Austin or Emma...or so many other courageous children and parents who understand and know how 'blessed and lucky' we really are. I'm feeling your pain right now in seeing and knowing that Morgan is moving on ahead of us. {HUGS}

I'm so sorry that Emma (and you) had to go through that seizure and that Emma has been sick. As a mom who has watched her daughter have seizures, I know how frustrating and scary they can be. My daughter mostly had partial focal seizures, too, but did have one seizure similar to Emmi's. She did not have more, however, and that was the only one that ever generalized. I hope Emma never again has another generalized seizure.

Boy dont you look so pretty with your first real big girl haircut. I am so glad that you for the most part enjoyed it. I have not taken my Emma for a real haircut yet...there is just no way!!! LOL! Glad to read that the sleep study went well, she is the true trooper!!! Also glad that you are all having a wonderful visit, joyful memories I am sure. And finally HAPPY 30TH BIRTHDAY JOSH!! Everyone I have talked to says that their 30's were/are great. I am still waiting for that to happen, I am 33 and sometimes I feel like I am 93 LOL!!! Ah well, enjoy every day is what I always say and if the day comes with back pain or whatever...that is what Advil is for LOL!!
Hope you all have a great rest of the week. Hope the temperature is nice by you, we are definately feeling the fall temperatures here in Chicago, I think tomorrow is only supposed to be in the high 50's BURRR!!!!

I'm so glad that Emma doesn't have a scary diagnosis, but wouldn't it be great to have a not-so-scary one that gives you a roadmap for what to expect next? As a parent of grown children and grandparent, I can affirm that we probably don't get one of those for any of our children, though. My clingy toddler turned out to be my world-traveling grown daughter, having traveled to more countries than I can name, while my never-met-someone-who-wasn't-a-friend toddler who ventured fearlessly into any situation, a big smile on her face, has moved back to our old hometown, to the very neighborhood where she grew up, because she feels most comfortable nestled there. I would have guessed their roles would have been the opposite!
It's so nice to read of your delight in Emma's accomplishments, in whatever order or time line they appear, and she's clearly such a delightful little girl. I still hope we can get her and my granddaughter Emmi, and older sisters Madi and Jill, together some time, although I have to warn you that about the only signs that Emmi uses with any frequency these days are "no" and "stop"! She is definitely two.

OUR PRAYERS HAVE BEEN ANSWERED!!! THANKS YOUR SWEET LORD THAT THIS PRECIOUS ANGEL HERE ON EARTH HAS HAD NEGATIVE RESULTS FOR MITO!!!! I cant tell you the loud sigh I had when reading this. I am overjoyed for you all, I cant tell you the feeling I am having, my eyes poured tears of joy for that sweet girl!!! My Emma had the honor of sitting here with me as I was reading this and of course saw my tears, she hugged me and said *you OK mommy*. I of course hugged her as tight as I could and said YES!!!
We are celebrating this joyous occasion with you here in Illinois, Chris just went out for ice cream LOL!!!!

What a blessing to receive such great news from Dr. Shoffner! I am so happy Emma does not have Mito- I know you two are so thankful. We thank you for always encouraging and supporting us! What a great update- no seizures! WOOHOO! I'm so happy the tremor is "not a big deal!" I mean, you know what I mean! Yeah! We think about you all the time and I'm sure your mommy has no fingernails left!! I really admire your patience because I would be on the phone all the time- ha!

I'm so glad that Emma is feeling better and that her tremors are not an ominous sign.
Until you mentioned that head-banging, I had forgotten that my brother--my brother who ended up being valedictorian of his college class and a VP at a major corporation--used to bang his head so often and so frequently against his crib that he would bounce his crib all the way across the room of his wooden-floored bedroom.

I hope Emma is doing better today. It's been raining here for 2 days straight! We really needed it, but at this point, it can save a little for next month! Hey Lauren, I am so happy that you and my dear friend Tracy M. have each other to compare notes to. It always helps to have someone know exactly what you are going through. As far as feeding pumps, I use the Enteralite Pump, it is ambulatory so it charges and If needed be put into a back pack and she can walk aroung. But we usually only use it at night and bolus through-out the day if needed. But my hubby was clever and put in a decorative hook on the side of her bed where the pump can hang (in the pack) so it eliminates a pole, and it has worked really well for us. hope that your results come in really soon. First of all I am so glad to read that Madi is enjoying school. Way to go Madi!!! I am getting anxious, Nathan starts a week from Wednesday, constant and immediate butterflies in my tummy when I think about it LOL!!! I am sorry to read about Emma's infection, sure hope it gets better quickly...poor baby!!! I also am sorry to read about the shaking and outchy joints, *sorry if I have this information wrong, Emma was making it VERY difficult to read* LOL!! Praying that both will ease and dissapear. Hoping that you are able to get the results from Atlanta quickly, I cant imagine playing the waiting game for so long!! Praying that they come in soon!!!

Hi Guys,
What type of bags/pump do you use? We have the Kangaroo bags/pump and I ordered a special clamp to connect the feeding bag into the connecting tube. If I remember correctly the clamps can be used on most types of bags. Let me know if you are interested. They cost about $20 each, but they last for 4-6 months. Sky would come disconnected during the middle of the night and we would be just feeding her bed. What a MESS! Also, she would lose all of her stomach contents since the tube was open. I love this clamp.
I too am so excited about hearing the news from Atlanta. When I visit your page (almost daily) I get goosebumps as I read, because I know soon you will be able to tell us the results. Then maybe we will have a better direction to head with Sky.

I will certainly add Madeline to my prayers and thoughts. We've had our times when a cold or other minor illness sent my granddaughter Emmi into the hospital, her glucose levels spiraling down due to her as-yet-undiagnosed metabolic disorder. For some reason, those episodes have lessened as Emmi gets older, and for that, we're grateful. I'm so sorry to hear about the new staph outbreak and the shaking, but it was fun to read about the progress on the sleeping front.

Are these Zevex bags? Here is a tip for those...push in the connector and twist it. It is supposed to "lock" into place. We have not gotten the new bags yet, but that has been a topic of discussion over at p2p recently, so I will pass that along to you in the hopes that it helps you.
Sorry there is still no word. None here either and it is getting wearing. I am not sure how you have done it for longer than us! Ugh!
Sorry to hear about the Staph too. Nicholas and I both went through an outbreak last week and can I say...I have a new respect for kids dealing with this...SUPER painful and the lancing and draining...wow! OUCH! Hope she is better soon.
Glad Madi likes school. I am sure that she is having a blast! Hope it continues that way!

Wow what a huge difference in the two pictures, that is so awesome!!! Keep on growing little tough, you are doing so great!!! You are looking more and more like your big sister everyday, Emma is definatley becoming Madi's *mini me*!!!
Hope the temperature is cooler by you all today, we have finally got some relief today. Its been over 100 here everyday for the last 6 days, so it is nice to have some cooler temperatures.
