I have been following Lakota's page for several years, always hoping for good news when I open the caringbridge site. I am so sorry to read the latest update - it brought me to tears. I'm praying the next post will be good news. Lakota is blessed to have a mom and dad that know the Lord and teach her about our Savior. I know He is with her and with you always.

I am sick to read this news... I have followed Lakota's story for so many years now, through my own cancer diagnosis & relapse. Was so shocked to read that she now has to deal with another cancer. I'm so very sorry to hear this.

I hope the surgery was a big success and that you are holding onto hope. I tried to find your relatives via facebook but nothing came up - they either go under a different name on there or they set their privacy settings so that they cannot be searched.

In any case, praying for all of you.

Have a blessed Christmas season Deb, Steve and Lakota! We keep all 3 of you in our thoughts and prayers always.

Deb - have you ever talked to your neurologist about a spinal cord stimulator implant? I talked to a woman a few weeks ago and she'd had one implanted for chronic back pain after 3-4 back surgeries. She's had RLS for a number of years now and once she had the implant her RLS went completely away. It's been over a year and she has not had an episode ONCE. I googled it to see if it has been used for RLS and I do find information on it. So it might be worth running by your doc. This woman (who is young - in her early 30's maybe?) said there are a couple of different brands and after reading up on them she chose the Medtronic. It has been a blessing for both her chronic pain and RLS. She told me she sleeps like a baby every night now!!! Talk to your doc and let me know what he/she says! God Bless you guys! I hope 2013 is an AWESOME year for you - you surely deserve it.

Have an awesome school year, Lakota! Bailey is starting HS this year, too. I can't believe how quickly time has passed and you girls are both growing up waaaay too fast! Bailey has her orientation next Wednesday. Her bus will pick her up at 6:50 a.m., lol! High school will be quite a shock to her system after a summer of sleeping in until noon! Take good care, Lakota - make some new, fun memories, new friends, and enjoy all that your high school has to offer you. Well, and what YOU have to offer to high school!
We'll be thinking of you, as as always, keeping you close in our prayers.

Hi Deb, Steve and Lakota,
We are so glad to hear that Lakota continues to do so well. Maybe public high school will fit Lakota very well. She is a smart girl with a good head on her shoulders and she may do fine with it. I know what you mean by the nervousness of it all. Bailey will be high school next year, and Anoka HS is so huge and so full of the typical problems with a school that large with such a diverse population of students. I just hope and pray she does well and stays out of trouble!!! She has a pretty good circle of friends, but I still worry.

I wish the RLS would lift for you. So exhausting and frustrating for you. I wish they'd figure out what can be done for it, for the "miracle drug" to come through that would take care of it all. And I'm sorry to hear about Steve's continued unemployment. Darn trade industry - there are still so many laid off. Roger, the kids' dad, has worked maybe 4 full-time weeks all year and has had many 2 day or less weeks. Laid off for 4 months now. Hopefully things will turn around soon and we can get some more people actively working....in something that pays a liveable wage.

Bailey is doing great. She just had her annual long-term follow-up stuff. She goes in monthly for phlebotomy sessions because her ferritin levels are still way too high. According to her ferriscan she had done a few weeks ago there are still very high levels of iron in her liver, which has been causing scarring too, so we'll be at this monthly stuff for at least another year (she started it last March). But I guess once the iron is off and gone, her liver will hopefully repair itself and she'll be good to go. Her cataracts are stable, too, so that's good. She's about 4'11" now, and that's probably where she'll stay since she started puberty over 2 years ago. Was hoping she'd hit 5 feet, but that's pretty close I guess!

I haven't been able to do an update on Bailey's CB site, because every time I try to do one, it doesn't "take". I was hoping to end it with one last entry and get a book of her journey made. I've asked CB support what's wrong with the old classic sites and why I can't do updates. I have people who have told me they've signed the guestbook, too, but I don't see any of the entries, either. Very frustrating.

Hunker down, I think Jan and Feb there will be "payback" for the very un-Minnesota-like winter we've been having so far!

Take care you guys. It's so great to read your update.

love, Terri & Bailey

Hi LaKota and parents,
Hope you all had a great summer. Our weather was awful, the wetest coldest summer in years. We did a lot though and everyone is healthy and happy. Kenny and me went on a cruise to Turkey and Greece which we loved. We visited Patmos, a Greek Isle where St John was inprisoned, we went to the cave where he lived and wrote the book of Revelation. I lit some candles for our friends, you included.

Can you see them?

It's so good to hear an update from you, Deb. I can't even update Bailey's site - seems like these "classic" sites are so dysfunctional now. It won't add the updates and drops stuff out like the photos so I've sort of given up on it. I need to get a book made, but am thinking about having it done through Shutterfly so I can add more to it than what I've had on the CB site.

I'm so sorry about Steve's unemployment - and I can relate - Roger is laid off, too. It's just so tough right now for so many people/families just like us. I'm sorry too that the darn RLS is still hanging around. I wish there was something your doctors could do for it. It's wonderful to hear that Lakota continues to be healthy and growing. She is about 2 inches shorter than Bailey I think - and Bailey is 13, going into 8th grade as well. The teenage years/hormones have hit my little baby girl real hard and she is changing so much. It's scary!! I'm just not ready for her to be a teenager yet, and I don't like it one little bit!! But I guess there isn't much I can do about it, right?! Enjoy the rest of your summer. Tell Lakota and Steve "hi" from us, and know that we keep you in our prayers and thoughts every day. Take good care.

Hi Debbie and LaKota
so surprised and glad to see an update. Glad LaKota is healthy and well, not so glad about Steve's job loss. It's the same here, lots of redundancies, my daughter Trudi's husband was made redundant too, he's lucky in that he's getting quite a good package so they will be OK, he also does watch repairs which will keep him going.
Our summer has been non existent too, we had a good week in April, then last week was good, but it's all to change tomorrow with rain coming back.

I do look in often to see if you've updated, and as you know I did e-mail you too, and you did answer so, I knew everything was OK, but it's still nice to keep regular checks on our caringbridge families. I don't update so often either, I usually do it once a week now unless we're away.
LaKota's school holidays sound the same as our kids.

Thank you for updating!!! It is good to hear Lakota is doing well, but I am NOT happy she is being teased at school and having trouble making friends. I was severly bullied in elementary school and it was very tough on me for many years; impacted me quite a bit .. I know what it feels like. Some kids just feel like they need to have "power" - and so they gang up on someone for *any* reason & then convince others to do the same to that person.. I'm sorry Lakota has been a target. I hope that will end soon.

I hope you find some relief soon for your medical problems too! It is so frustrating to be in pain & not have a solution.

I am thinking of you all!

Deb, I sure hope they can find something for you. I just feel so bad about your RLS and wish there was something, anything that could be done to relieve it. We're keeping you and Lakota in our prayers, as we do every day. We need to get the girls together for a play date (can you still say that when they're 11 and 12?!) and now hockey season is starting up so Bailey will have practice and games 5-6 times a week through Spring. She would LOVE to see Lakota and visit. Maybe we can get up to St. Cloud over the Christmas break so the girls can get together. We'll figure something out. Take care and please know that there are so many praying for some relief for you. And we know what the power of prayer can do.

Dear Debbie,
I'm sorry that you are having so much problems with your RLS, I do hope someone will be able to come up with a remedy for you soon.
We are all short in this family, (ask Mrs Pam), Kenny and me are 5'2" Lesley, Kayla's mammy is only 4'10", Kyle, Kayla's wee brother is the wee-est in his class as Kayla is in hers. I know how hard it is for you when LaKota is left out from some things, I'm sure there will be a special friend for her somewhere, she deserves one. As regards family, there is a famous saying....You can pick your friends but NOT your family, every family, I don't care who they are have someone in it who are so indifferent to others needs, I have an uncle Jacky, the only uncle I have left alive, and I don't see him at all, he never once came to see Kayla when she was ill, and never even sent a card or anything. My kids told me I should forgive him, and in a way I have, but I really don't want anything to do with him now. Of course other things have happened in the relationship, but I'm not getting into that, it's not worth the effort.
LaKota,
I can't believe you're going to be 12, wow! what are you getting for your birthday? I bet you are so excited.
We're still getting RAIN.

Hi Debbie,

I just came to check on you! I am hoping all is well in your neck of the woods!

I am also writing to ask a favor.

A neighbor of mine has a 4 year old who has been battling Leukemia since he was 6 months (I think). She is Hmong and only recently set up a caring bridge page. Her son isn't doing well, and he is preparing for a transplant. With everything you've been through, I was wondering if you would join me in getting the word out to other caringbridge families to offer her some support. She is all alone in this.

His name is Jonathan, and his website is: http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/jonathanyuphengxiong

Take care!!

Praying that everything goes well with LaKota's tests, and that you can relax and enjoy your family time together.
Our weather has been warmer than usual although that wouldn't be hard for us, we had no summer at all the last two years, just plenty of rain. We're still getting rain but at least it's drying in between and the temperature reaches about 68 degrees which is warm for us the nights are still only 48 degrees.

Dear Debbie,
I know it must be so hard for you to be without your beloved mom even though you know that she is with your two other babies in heaven, you would all still love to have her here on earth with you. My mammy hasn't been feeling too great the last couple of months and we're always worrying about her, she's 82 years old. I know it's a great thing to live to old age and have had a good life, but we always think it can go on forever don't we?
Always praying for LaKota especially for the tests that the results will be good. Hoping too that you can get someone to help with the RLS.

I always think that when you don't update here it just means that things are going good and you are living life like you should be! I am happy to hear that Lakota is doing so well. I can't wait to see you all this summer up at the lake.

I can tell you that missing your mom will never go away. I still think of my dad every day. However, it does get easier with time.

Praying for good test results for Lakota and that they find meds that work for you!! Hope to see you soon! Barb

Happy belated birthday Steve.

Best wishes to Susie on the birth of her 1st grandchild, it's so great being a granny.

Debbie
I have been thinking about you and your family a lot, praying that you find comfort and peace. Your mammy knew how much you all loved her, and that's a wonderful thing. My mammy is 82 and we all love her very much, but we know at some time she will also leave us for heaven, it's so hard to think about it. My mammy has told us she isn't scared of dying, and that's she's had a good life knowing and loving us all, having lived long enough to see her great grandchildren and be part of their lives, BUT we still dread to think of her not being here. I'm like you Debbie, my mammy and me speak on the phone at least 4 times a day, and we see each other all the time. You have had so much heartache in your life Debbie, but you have the love of Steve and LaKota, your daddy and the rest of your family and I'm sure that's what will get you through the pain of not having your mammy with you in the flesh, of course because we believe, we know that she will always be with you in Spirit.
Praying for you all especially that LaKota's tests will all be good. Love from Scotland, Rosi

Our daughter's neurologist specializes in pediatric sleep disturbances, but also has a strong interest in RLS. Here is a link to an article that she wrote, and also some contact info for her. She is in Richmond, VA, and would probably be willing to talk with you on the phone about your case if you left a specific message. She runs the local RLS support group.

So glad that you are enjoying school LaKota, I know a wee girl who would just love to go horse riding with you, she actually went on a trek last week and loved it, although she said her horse had a funny name, it was called Gigha which is in fact the name of an island off the coast of Scotland.

Hi LaKota.
I'm glad you had such a fun time with your cousins and the rest of your family. My grandson Callum would love to go fishing with you, when we were in Englad the othr week we went to the sea side and a man was fishing, he let Callum cast his line into the sea and he caught a fish, the man was really nice letting Callum reel it in and un hook the fish, that was the first time he'd ever done that.
Glad you granny is doing more now, she must e feeling better within herself.

I pray all continues to go well for you and your family!

I am at a loss for words. My deepest sympathy goes out to the Breuer family. Tim, loving husband to Susie and wonderful father to Mitchell, Logan, Bryce, Joel and Ethan passed away suddenly yesterday at only 37 years old. Very little is known right now but please keep them in your thoughts and prayers. This family has already suffered more pain and loss than most people will have in a lifetime, and yet they show more strength and love for each other and Faith in God, that they inspire everyone they know.

I believe Gods arms will be around them all and Bryce's arms are around Tim holding and comforting him. Then he will take him hand in hand around Heaven.
Lots of CB ((((Hugs)))) and ++++Prayers++++ to you and your family!

Blessings To All On Trinity Sunday!

Dear Lakota and Debbie,

I am pausing, here, at my keyboard, to pray for good testing for Lakota tomorrow, and for peace and healing for Lakota's grandmother. As the home page here says, "Nothing shall be impossible with God."

I hope Lakota is able to enjoy normal outdoor play during these beautiful days of spring. When my guys were her age, we practically lived at the park between Little League Baseball, Community Soccer, using the park equipment, and taking a picnic. They also enjoyed skating, playing tag, and shooting hoops in our driveway. I am sure some of these things must appeal to Lakota.

God bless you always.

Grace, peace, love, and all good,

~Colette

Today's Collect:

Almighty and everlasting God, you have given to us your servants grace, by the confession of a true faith, to acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity, and in the power of your divine Majesty to worship the Unity: Keep us steadfast in this faith and worship, and bring us at last to see you in your one and eternal glory, O Father; who with the Son and the Holy Spirit live and reign, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Hi LaKota
It is a beautiful day in St. Louis.
Thank goodness!
We have our Tartan Day Parade,
and ALL the Preschoolers and their
families will be joining us. This is the
first time we have 100%. They will look
so cute in their kilts!

The Parade will have lots of folks walking to
represent their official clans. We are the only
imaginary clan..The Nessie Fan Clan. Hopefully,
the Loch Ness Monster will show up this year.
He didn't last time!! There will be different Scottish
activites later today, and tomorrow is a special service
at one of the churches.
This is an Annual Weekend Event.
It is always the first weekend
closest to April 6th because that is the
National Tartan Day in the USA.

Hi LaKota, and Deb,
I am glad that LaKota is doing so well, and is back to school again, I will pray that she does not get anything at school.
Deb, I will be praying for your mom, I know how stressful it must feel. I think about a situation that we had similar to this back down home, I had 4 other siblings, 3 brothers, and one sister, I always thought we were a close family, and always had close friends. When your kids you have your spats, with your siblings, and friends, and think that when you grow up, that those spat would leave too, I had one brother, that every time one of us would have a spat in the family, or with one of our friends, he would try to make things better, by making the first move in trying to talk with us, or giving us something, or phoning our parents and talking with them, as time went by, and we grew older, we still had spats, lesser one’s with our love ones, and friends, they don‘t mend as fast as compared to when your younger, your mind now works completely different, in some ways good, and in some ways not so good, I guess I was wrong about those spats going away when I was younger it made me think back to many years ago, I still have that one brother that would try to do something it make it better, when he knew something was going on, but as now being older, and how again like I will say, our minds work differently, we took it, as he was butting into our life’s, and making a bigger mess out of it , for one time, my sister, and her husband had something not good going on, it was my sister's fault, so my brother went and told her husband about it, rest of us siblings thought how could you turn your back on our sister, even when she was at wrong, little did they think, nor did I think at the time, I still don't know if the rest of my siblings think what I think, but in the long run, it made my sister, and her husband closer than they ever were before, they are so much happier, I noticed, that he did a few other things that would upset love ones, and friend. He, thinking he was doing right thing, because it always brought the other person closer to the other person, and they would push my brother away, it took me 50 years to look back, and realize he wasn't trying to hurt no one, but trying to protect them. My siblings, and me, always thought that my parents liked him the best, he would call my parents almost every day just to say hi, or go visit them, so if we got a speeding ticket, or back than drank a little to much, and we didn't want our parents to know, we made sure not to tell him, we even had our kids when they turned teenagers, trained not to mention anything to their uncle, that they didn't want the grandparents to know, and finally year's later down the road, my pa got really sick, right before Thanksgiving, I kept wondering in my mind, if this was a test of some kind from God, to bring our love ones, and close friends together, and to show my pa, that he and maw, brought us siblings up good. It made me think, all these years, it was love that my brother gave in a different way, and he was watching out for us, he was protecting us, and all I could think of at that time, was he was doing us no good, boy was I wrong! Now I see my son drinking all the time, because I covered up for him, when my brother was only concerned for him, and my wife, and I, and that’s way he told my parents, or another love one, so that we could try and, protect him, but I always would cover up for him, especially when he was a teenager, and in his twenties, it didn't do him any good covering up for him, He has a wife now, with 3 wonderful children, and along with that, he has a drinking problem, if only we could turn back the clocks.
LaKota, you, and your grandma are in my prayers.

Your friend in Ohio.

Hi Lakota, Deb & Steve,
We are praying for nothing but wonderful results from your biopsy and appointments coming up this week. And they will be! Have a fun visit at the U - hope you see some of your favorites there while you are waiting. Did you make it back to school last week? We haven't had chicken pox at Bailey's school for quite a while now, although, now that I think of it, my kids all 3 got theirs very late spring. Ooops, you didn't need to hear that, though! We're going to have to find some time to get the girls together, Deb. Maybe we could go do Build-a-Bear with them. I like early mornings before the crowd hits, myself. Once the flu and chicken pox season is well over, that is. If you don't like driving down here, Deb, we can come up and get you! We are less than an hour down Hwy. 10. Take good care, all of you. Lakota, you are in our prayers each and every day, sweetie!

Lakota,
Amanda is my sister and we have been following your site for years. I actually check it every morning when I get to work. It is encouraging to see a little (very grown up) girl handle all of this stress the way that you do. My daughter Baillie attended one of your "Christmas birthdays" a few years back. It was great to see you at Amanda and Luke's reception and Hunter's baptism and birthday party. Thank you also for putting our Mom's site on yours. Every prayer is answered. Best wishes to you for a full recovery and to be able to go back to school soon. I know you enjoy playing with your friends! Keep up the fight!

Debbie,

I would NOT get that chicken pox shot. Devin got it
last year and got very sick; had several different
type of reactions, etc. We were pressured into it
by a NP while the dr. was out.

Your sledding incident sounds scary......I just
refuse to sled. That kind of thing always happens
to me. Devin has been off of sledding this year due
to the knee.

Hi Debbie- it's been so long! I'm so glad LaKota is doing so well. I'm sorry you are having pain! As for the whole school/click thing..sigh...went through it with David..when these kids miss too much school and clicks are formed, it is so sad because they are such great kids but this too is part of the cancer journey I have heard it over and over from other parents. Sometimes joining sports or dance or other activities helps with socialization...Dave has lots of friends in school..never eats alone etc..but most of these kids are involved in sports or they skateboard...and they have their weekend clicks..so that is when it can be hard for him...he's so involved in his comedy and does shows and what not but it's basically older people...besides him the youngest is about 21.....so this remains a tough issue. Keeping you all in my prayers...Hugs from FLORIDA,

Hi Lakota, Deb & Steve,
Ouchie, Deb! Stick to the padded sled next time, okay? (Or pad your hind end!) It has been a wonderful few weeks to get out in the warmer temps and added snowfall, though, hasn't it? We've been spoiled this year (knock on wood!) I wish you guys lived closer so the girls could get out to do stuff together. Maybe we'll get them together for a Build-a-Bear exursion at MOA sometime. We're thinking of you guys and keeping you in our prayers each and every day. Hunker down this weekend for the colder temps - reality setting back in! Looks like pay-back time for the nice temps we've been having. Big hugs to you, Lakota, from Bailey and me.

Dear Debbie, Steve, and Lakota,

I came by to wish Steve a happy feast day. I am sorry to read that Debbie has been in the hospital. Since Steve's entry was a week and a half ago, I am sure things are much better by now. Maybe Debbie is not up to a rousing singing of Good King Wenceslas, a carol associated with this day, but perhaps Lakota and Steve can try. I'll leave the words and the collect for the day.

God bless you all.

Grace and peace,

Colette

Good King Wenceslas looked out, on the Feast of Stephen,
When the snow lay round about, deep and crisp and even;
Brightly shone the moon that night, tho' the frost was cruel,
When a poor man came in sight, gath'ring winter fuel.

"Hither, page, and stand by me, if thou know'st it, telling,
Yonder peasant, who is he? Where and what his dwelling?"
"Sire, he lives a good league hence, underneath the mountain;
Right against the forest fence, by Saint Agnes' fountain."

"Bring me flesh, and bring me wine, bring me pine logs hither:
Thou and I will see him dine, when we bear them thither."
Page and monarch, forth they went, forth they went together;
Through the rude wind's wild lament and the bitter weather.

"Sire, the night is darker now, and the winds blow stronger;
Fails my heart, I know not how, I can go no longer."
"Mark my footsteps, my good page. Treadst thou in them boldly:
Thou shalt find the winter's rage freeze thy blood less coldly."

In his master's steps he trod, where the snow lay dinted;
Heat was in the very sod which the saint had printed.
Therefore, Christian men, be sure, wealth or rank possessing,
Ye who now will bless the poor, shall yourselves find blessing.

~John Mason Neale (1818-1866)

We give you thanks, O Lord of glory, for the example of the first martyr Stephen, who looked up to heaven and prayed for his persecutors to your Son Jesus Christ, who stands at your right hand: where he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

I love Christmas music. One of my favorite carols
is Silent Night, and especially the verse that
invites us to sing with the angels!

'Silent night, holy night,
wondrous star, lend thy light;
With the angels let us sing
Alleluia to our King.
Christ the Savior is born,
Christ the Savior is born!'

Wishing you a blessed Christmas
filled with angelic singing!

hi LaKota
I put all the ornaments on my
Christmas tree yesterday. This
morning I found some "crystal"
(plastic) light covers. I put a few
red covers over yellow lights...and
got orange, which made me think of
you and Kylie because you both love
orange. Is it still your favorite color?
Blue used to be my favorite color, but in
my old age, I think perhaps red is now my
favorite. I love seeing all the red Christmas
decorations in my house, and it makes me happy.

Hello Lakota,

Hope you are getting ready for Christmas.
Have you got the inside of the house
decorated too? We haven't done the
inside, just the outside....of course
Devin and Kara had to help their daddy
hang the lights. This year we also
got a new inflatable snowman. He will
look a lot better when he has a lot of
snow to sit on!!

My dad has my grandma's nativity that
he said I could have. I just have to
bring it home from OK to here.....no
problem!!! One of these days....

Enjoy the holidays. I know Christmas
is your favorite time of year...me too!!

"Come, ye thankful people, come,
raise the song of harvest home;
all is safely gathered in,
ere the winter storms begin.
God our Maker doth provide
for our wants to be supplied;
come to God's own temple, come,
raise the song of harvest home. '

Hi Deb, Steve and Lakota,
We're wishing you a wonderful Thanksgiving and hoping you are enjoying the season. You probably woke up to some of that white stuff on the ground, too. My kids think they got gypped because it's not the warm stuff they can build a snowman with. (Then I reminded them that we need a little more snow to do that anyway!) We have so much to be thankful for, and it is remembering those blessings and Miracles we've been graced with that remind us of God's love and that He is near - especially during these weary times when we might think we've been forgotten or have received all that we can. His Grace is surely enough for all of our needs and so I'm praying for more... more of His magnificent Grace for you and for so many of our friends. Have a Blessed Thanksgiving and feel the strength of our prayers across the miles.

Dear LaKota.
I'm very sad to hear that the situation with ryan hasn't cleared up yet. I don't know why his parents are so against him being friends with a girl. When Kayla's mammy was a girl she had a best friend, a boy called Steven and they remained friends all through high school, infact when Lesley met Kayla's daddy, he was a wee bit jealous of Steven, but there was nothing to worry about they were best of friends and nothing more. I hope you are not so sad anymore. Love and prayers from Scotland,Rosi

Happy Birthday, Lakota! We hope your day is very special and fun (with no boogers!). The friendships, especially between girls, can be so difficult. It is hard to sit back and watch your child hurting because of the actions and words of another. If only the kids could be more respectful to each other. I know what you're going through, Deb. I tell my kids guess what? Those kids grow in to adults and still do the same mean things to others so you have to deal with them then, too! So it's best we all learn how to deal with difficult people, even at our girls' early age. We are SO HAPPY to hear that Steve has a job and that it is going well for him. Many blessings today, Lakota, and for 100 more years to come! Have a big piece of (chocolate) cake for us today!

We're thinking of you guys today, as we do every day - and hoping you are having a great week.....and staying COOL! Wow! How un-Minnesota-like this weather is! I'm ready for the heat and humidity to END - really soon! We hope and PRAY that Steve is back to work - someplace. Roger's job has wound down these past few weeks, but he has been told that things are picking up and will begin to move again real soon. Lakota - are you looking forward to school? Bailey is getting excited. But truthfully, it will probably take a crane and a stick of dynamite to get her out of bed in the mornings! That girl loves to stay up late and sleep in late. (Her older sister is much worse, though! Ha! High school times. I'm actually giggling about that!) God Bless you guys. We're keeping Steve's mom in our prayers as well. Please keep us updated on her as well.

Debbie, Lakota, and Steve,
I hope work has gotten better, and I hope you are enjoying your Summer. Sorry, I haven't visted site in a while.
Please pray for this little baby ethan powell. His website is www.ethanpowell.com.
Below is what his mom wrote today.
Her name is Becky. I know how it is to have a little one hurting. My oldest daughter hannah, just had an apendectomy, then abcess from June 20-July 3rd.
She's 13, but I know you know how it is to have little children so ill.
So, here's becky's update:
2nd Update/6:00pm [Becky] This is going to be a long update. In the last day and a half we have been a little bit overloaded with information. I'll do my best to post as much as I know (and somewhat understand.)
So let's start from the beginning of this trip to the ICU...they brought us down here because his saturation of oxygen was dropping pretty steadily and he was having retractions (meaning he was using all of the muscles in his chest to breathe.)
We got here and they put him on a high-flow oxygen machine, which basically forces his lungs open to their full extent. That didn't go so well. He rubbed the nasal thing out of his nose every two seconds, and then since it was humidified, the water would gather in the tubing and then squirt a larger amount of water into his nose and he would gag on it. Then the nurse or I would have to suction his mouth. He was awake, but we weren't allowed to move him, so when he cried all I could do was wrap my arm around him and sing to him. It was not fun.
Well, that machine wasn't enough to keep him oxygenated, so they decided to intubate him, meaning that put him on a ventilator. The initial thought of that devastated me. Then our doctor explained to us that we needed to put him on this now so that his body could rest and let the cells engraft.
They believe that he is engrafting Ben's cells. Since Ethan hasn't seen white cells in so long, his body is kinda going crazy. The cells are rushing to the places in his body that might need repairing. They release a substance, which I won't try to spell, that can cause inflaming in the lungs, etc. So his lungs are inflamed and irritated and having to work overtime. He was breathing about 70 to 80 times a minute by the time they put him on the vent. If they would have let him continue to breathe like that, his body would have eventually just worn out. So they put him on the vent to take some of the work for him so he can engraft and heal.
Here are the procedures they did yesterday: They put the tube down his throat to let the vent breathe for him, put a central line in his groin, put a foley in to measure his urine, put a tube down his nose to his intestines, and put an arterial line in his wrist. We have to be very careful when we touch him, and of course, we can't hold him. I feel so very useless. Normally I spend my days playing with Ethan, nursing him, changing him, and giving him medicines. Now I just sit and watch. I watch and obsess about all the numbers on the monitors and drive the nurses crazy asking questions. :) Of course I still talk to him and sing to him and hold his little hand, but I miss the interaction with him so much. And it's only been one day!
This update could go on forever, so I'll cut it off by giving you the latest updates on him. His ANC is 128!! (It was 200 this morning, but they said it can fluctuate.) Anyway...he has an ANC!!! His white blood cells are to 1600! They drew a lab this morning to check to see how much of his blood is his and how much is his Daddy's. They said we probably won't know the results from that until Thursday or Friday. PLEASE PRAY for the cells to be 100% donor (Ben's cells)!
Also, they are beginning to feed Ethan breastmilk through the tube in his nose. They'll gradually increase the rate as he adjusts.
As for prayer requests, I'll do my best to be specific about what we need to pray for. We've been praying for engraftment, and that appears to be what's happening. Now we have to pray for him to continue to engraft and for the side effects from that to heal. PLEASE PRAY for Ethan's lungs to heal, for him to continue to engraft, for him to stay free of infection, for the leukemia to be gone forever, and for all his organs to function beautifully so we can get him well as soon as possible. And I haven't ever asked for prayers for this before, but I feel like it's a need. PLEASE PRAY for the doctors and nurses to make the right decisions about his care. We believe them to be put here by God to be His hands and feet. Thank you SO much for your prayers. PRAYER WORKS!!

That is good news to hear that Lakota tests came back saying that her chromosomes look normal. God is good!!! It sounds like you are having a good Summer so far. I know what you mean about it going so fast. Johnathan just finished up tennis camp and next week is Cody's last week of Summer school. Then we are going out of town and then in August we go up to Minnesota. Before you know it, school will be starting up again.

Keeping you all in my prayers.
God bless!

Debbie,
That is good that Lakota is excited about Summer school. My son Cody has two more weeks left. He is taking Summer English classes and Summer band. The hard thing is that he has to be there at 7:45am. It is very hard to get him out of bed in the mornings.
I am still praying for some doors to open up for Steve. I know it must be very stressful and scary at the same time. God knows all about it and he will take care of you. God said he will never leave you are forsake you.
I just wanted to say,Keep on keeping the faith. God has something out there for your husband Steve. With God all things are possible (Matthew 19:26). I was at a christian book store the other day and I bought these scripture cards that had positive sayings on them. I will quote one of the cards that I bought. When life hurts God hears. Give to Him your worries. Take to Him all your fears.

Keeping you and your family in my prayers always and always close to my heart.

God bless!
Love,
Ann

Hi Debbie and Lakota,
I know how worried you are about the 3 year check-up, it's only natural, and it doesn't matter how many times people tell you "it will be fine" you just won't be able to relax until it's over and done with, than you've got the extra worry about Steve's job. Probable these worries don't help with your RLS. Hope everything goes well on Saturday for Kayla and that LaKota has a great time with all the family.

Oh Debbie,
I am so sorry to hear about Steve's job, the worries you all have over there about insurance must be terrible, we don't have that problem in the UK, when you work you pay National Insurance contributions and if you don't work it doesn't matter you still get the same treatment, so you never have to worry about not having insurance to take care of your health. Blessings On Easter Morning!

"Welcome, happy morning!"
age to age shall say:
hell today is vanquished,
heaven is won today!
Lo! the dead is living,
God for evermore!
Him their true Creator,
all his works adore!

Refrain:
"Welcome, happy morning!" age to age shall say.

Earth her joy confesses,
clothing her for spring,
all fresh gifts return
with her returning King:
bloom in every meadow,
leaves on every bough,
speak his sorrow ended,
hail his triumph now.

Months in due succession,
days of lengthening light,
hours and passing moments
praise thee in their flight.
Brightness of the morning,
sky and fields and sea,
Vanquisher of darkness,
bring their praise to thee.

Maker and Redeemer,
life and health of all,
thou from heaven beholding
human nature's fall,
of the Father's Godhead
true and only Son,
mankind to deliver,
manhood didst put on.

Thou, of life the Author,
death didst undergo,
tread the path of darkness,
saving strength to show;
come then, true and faithful,
now fulfill thy word,
'tis thine own third morning!
rise, O buried Lord!

Loose the souls long prisoned,
bound with Satan's chain;
all that now is fallen
raise to life again;
show thy face in brightness,
bid the nations see;
bring again our daylight:
day returns with thee!

How are you this week, still off school? those chicken pox are awful aren't they? We didn't send Kyle to nursery school last week because he was on antibiotics for a chest infection and there were a lot of chicken pox cases at nursery. Kayla and the boys got outside to play for a wee while after school today, although it was very cold, I wrapped them up well, it was only dry for a while before the rains came again, Kayla was laughing so hard at her grampa and me running outside to put all the bikes back in the shed. Wow...you really got a lot of snow, didn't you?
I am SOOOO ready for spring. These COLD, gray
days aren't much fun.
My furnace went out SEVERAL times this past
fall...fortunately, I had an electric blanket. Finally,
got the furnace fixed. Then my refrigerator stopped
working, too. So, I bought a new refrigerator at the
Sear's Outlet Store....about 1/2 the price as one at
a regular store, so that was good.

A seventh grade student at Los Lunas Middle School will be able to continue to participate in class despite being sidelined by a recurrence of cancer.

Ashley Martinez’ classmates, with the assistance of a parent, on Friday gave a laptop computer with a Webcam to the youngster.

Martinez is suffering from Retinoblastoma – a form of eye cancer. She had been in remission for ten years, but recently the disease has returned and it has spread to her shoulder.

Mrs. Crawford’s seventh grade class wanted to do something to help but kept running into dead ends until one student approached her father for a donation.

The father, from Ace Rebar in Albuquerque, was asked by his daughter to donate money to the cause. Instead of donating money, he got Ashley a laptop with a Webcam and a Webcam for the classroom.

“Whenever she chooses to pop into the classroom, she can give me a call and we’ll turn ours on,” said Crawford.

At a ceremony on Friday, Ashley’s classmates presented the computer to her along with a check for $300 to help her family pay medical bills.

“It’s an honor,” said Ashley, “and it’s really special to me what they’ve done. And now I’ll have all the memories.”

Debbie,

It's so good to hear that Lakota is doing well. I am sorry that she has to stay home from school. I am sure it breaks your heart as well. I'm always worrying about Johnathan picking up a weird virus or something like that. I say a prayer over him every day. I also will be praying for steve and that things will start to get better for him and your whole family. It is very cold here as well. I hope it also starts to warm up here real soon. You just want to stay in your warm house and not ever leave. Again, I will be keeping you in my prayers and I will continue to keep Lakota in my prayers. Thank you for signing John's site and thank you for your prayers as well.

God Bless!
Love,
Ann
