Has Alexis ever been tested for gluten intolerance or celiac disease?

This site might be a start and if you think it fits, continue to check it out by searching for "gastritis and celiac disease" together. It's becoming more and more common as a problem for many ailments.

CREATE A PEPPER AT CHILI'S TO FIGHT CHILDHOOD CANCER!!!!

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Chili’s Grill & Bar® announced the kick-off of their fifth annual Create-A-Pepper to Fight Childhood Cancer campaign. Now through September 30, Chili’s restaurants around the country and, for the first time, in Puerto Rico, are marking National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month by inviting people to get creative and raise funds to help St. Jude find cures and save children with cancer and other catastrophic childhood diseases.
Guests at participating Chili’s restaurants can contribute to St. Jude in multiple ways:

- Make a donation to St. Jude and receive a Create-A-Pepper chili pepper coloring sheet designed for display at restaurants during the month.

- Purchase Create-A-Pepper T-shirts that can be customized with permanent marker.

- Buy a customized Create-A-Pepper key that can be cut for use at home or the office.

- Eat at Chili’s on Monday, Sept. 29, when Chili’s will donate 100 percent of profits from participating restaurant sales to St. Jude.

Visit www.createapepper.com and to make an online donation.

PASS IT AROUND!!!!

Hello Karen!
This is Lori, with her tail between her legs!!
You left me a message over a month ago, and I can't call you now, but I'm writing!!!!

I've been traveling, so everything seems to take a back seat, particularly those things I want to do!!!

I miss seeing you and your beautiful family, and I hope that these health issues you're facing will soon be a thing of the past.

Haven't we had enough??? :O)

Love,
Lori

H Alexis and Family,
What lovely family photos at your site! Everyone looks beautiful/handsome!
The snow reminds me of Germany! We went sledding all the time, too. My older brothers made snow-forts! My favorite was making snowmen (and snow angels). A rousing snowball fight was always good, too (grin).
Just wanted to stop in and let you know someone new is thinking of you.
Happy Day!

Four little turkeys sitting near a tree,

Three little turkeys with nothing to do,

Two little turkeys in the morning sun,

I LOVE your pic from the HopeKids event! I know I don't get the chance to sign guestbooks as often as I'd like, but we do continue to keep Alexis in our prayers, and all of you. Your family picture is evidence of the joy and celebration you live each and every day. And hey! I know those crazy clowns! I'm very glad to see Half Pint and Oscar back, too! I'll have to stop by Noah's page and check in as well! We missed the event, but I just signed up for HopeKids after I met Tom (nurse/Childrens) at Madison's benefit last month and he sent the info to me. We hope to see you all at some of the events. Hi Karen, I always smile when I think of you and your family. Thank you so much for all your thoughts and prayers. We keep you in ours everynight, too! I think Alexia is sharing her Guardian Angel with me and it flies around our houses at night...keeping a watchful eye. Pete said that he enjoyed chatting with you the other night- thanks for stopping by, My galstone has been acting up and making my tummy hurt lots...but that's o.k. I hear that Mrs. Koch has Alexia in class. She will LOVE her...she is the perfect teacher - especially for sensitive issues and stuff. Anyway, I am so excited for Disney. I will stop by with pictures and tell you all about it...
Oh and your website (webpage) is so great. Maybe you could come over sometime and show me how to jazz mine up a bit with photos and clip art. Well I am so thankful that your beautiful girl is still in remission- that is soooo awesome. I hope you all had a great summer. Thanks for all your entries on my caringbridge- I love reading them.
Take care. I'd love to get together for a cold drink or a walk around the block. Maybe once all the kids are in school, we'll have a little more time. Jake will be in Preschool on Mondays and Wednesday afternoons fro 1-3, so I would have time then....let's keep in touch. Take care. Love to all- Kris and family

A Mother's love is something
that no on can explain,
It is made of deep devotion
and of sacrifice and pain,
It is endless and unselfish
and enduring come what may
For nothing can destroy it
or take that love away . . .
It is patient and forgiving
when all others are forsaking,
And it never fails or falters
even though the heart is breaking . . .
It believes beyond believing
when the world around condemns,
And it glows with all the beauty
of the rarest, brightest gems . . .
It is far beyond defining,
it defies all explanation,
And it still remains a secret
like the mysteries of creation . . .
A many splendoured miracle
man cannot understand
And another wondrous evidence
of God's tender guiding hand.

Karen,
I kept looking at someone at MOA yesterday that looked like you.....(do you do that? I do it alot!!) were you guys there? I was wracking my brains trying to remember how I knew you....and as soon as it dawned on me I went back to the carousel to say hi but you guys were gone already. Anyway, I think it was you and Rachel I saw on the carousel but my brain doesn't work very quickly to process the info anymore! If it wasn't you, then sorry, I am more mixed up then I thought! We hope Alexis' sinus problems will clear up soon and she will start feeling better. I'm pretty surprised she would have constipation problems on the Mannatech! Especially with the Mannabear supplements. I have to watch those with my 2 younger ones or they go the other way with them because they're so loaded with the veggies/fruit extracts. I'm still searching for a brand that is a little cheaper but haven't found one yet. Have a great week all of you and enjoy this great weather! Alexis, you are in our prayers each and every night.

Hi, Alexis!

Those are some good looking dinosaurs! Let's see how many I can get right - stegosarus, triceratops, brachiosaurus, styrachosaurus. I can't quite make out the little one on the end, but it could be a plateosaurus or parasolopholus. If there is a stuffed one in the middle, I couldn't recognize it. I used to play with dinosaurs when I was little, but a lot of "new" kinds have been discovered since then. There is a famous painting of dinosaurs starting with the earliest ones at one end and the last ones at the other. It was spread out on six pages in a book I used to look at for hours and hours. I saw that same painting on a wall (or carpet or something) near the x-ray area at St. Jude.

I'm praying for good scans.

Hi, Karen and Alexis,
So glad to hear that things are fine there. :) Hope next week's checkup is a breeze.
I sure know how the friends/not friends things are with kids. My daughter's in kindergarten and is starting learn about that - another little girl told her if she plays with someone else at recess she won't be her friend. Crazy, huh? Must be a rite of passage. I think I remember it from my childhood, too. I didn't like it then, either. :)
Sending out lots of healthy vibes your way,

Hope you're enjoying all the new snow! My six year old and three year old are loving it, here. It's so pretty. Pretty much everyone's liking it exceopt for the dog - when we put her outside she gives us dirty looks. She'd rather lie by the fire, I think.

I didn't know Alexis was using an inhaler. So far, we've only needed the nebulizer, but we're needing it so much lately, that it makes me wonder!!
I hope all is well with you! If I ever get organized (ha!), I'll send a picture from the oncology party!!

Hi ~ Sorry to read that Alexis isn't feeling well, hope that she's on the mend soon. We've had all sorts of bugs at our house this fall, too. Maybe this cold MN air will freeze out all of the stuff that's been going around! Abe was also suprised with a flu shot at clinic last week - I think he & Alexis have the same feelings about those! I had to come up w/ a pretty good bribe for that one. Hope the kids have a fun Halloween. Will be thinking of you on your 3 yr dx anniversary. Take care.

Hello my dear cb friends in Minnesota! :)

I am sorry to hear you all are catching a cold! I sure hope you are feeling better real soon!

Wow! Alexis's 3 year anniversary is coming up soon!! I definitely understand how you feel when you say that sometimes it seems like it was yesterday and other times it seems like so long ago! Logan was diagnosed 2 years ago and I feel the same way! I also understand you feel when you talked about how your heart will sometimes jump when Alexis is not feeling well or has an ache or pain! You are definitely not alone with these feelings! I truly believe it comes with the territory! Hopefully these feelings will pass as time goes by! :)

You are right about the whole September and October awareness month. I didnt hear anything about September being Childhood Cancer Awareness month but the big talk going on this month is definitely Breast Cancer Awareness! Hopefully someday there will be more awareness of Childhood Cancer!

Is everyone getting excited for Halloween? OH~ I remember trick or treating when I lived in Minnesota! BRRRR! :) Ok~ It wasnt that terribly bad but it was cold! :) I hope the weather is warm this year and you have tons of fun on Halloween!

Hugs and best wishes

Hi, Karen and Alexis,
I'm sorry to hear about the colds in the family. We're all just getting over them here, so I can sympathize. Hope everyone sails through with just minor sniffles!
I'm also sorry and surprised to hear how little attention childhood cancer awareness month gets.
Hugs to you and your beautiful family, and thank you for all of your kind words on my site. Your encouragement lifts my spirits.

Hi Guys.

Hope you are enjoying school Alexis! I love the pictures from Duluth as we were just up there too and it's so beautiful on the big lake. Happy to hear you made it up there. Hope all is going well and you and enjoying & loving life. Karen, I was wondering if Alexis has tip-toeing from the vincristine? I know you put earlier she has high arches...what is that? What is the AFO splints...is that the same as serial casting? How long did you wear the orthotics? I asked about the Induced Asthma because Bel gets that chemo cough quite often, most noticeably around her 5-day steroid pulse? I'm sorry Alexis had to go thru all this junk too, but it's comforting for me that you know about it. You can always shoot me an email when you have time or sign in...thanks!

Enjoy the weekend because it sounds like it might be an Indian Summer...gotta love it here in Minnesota! Thanks so much for checking in on Bel and we will continue to pray and check in on you guys!

Hi Guys,

Where has the summer gone? It has just flown by for us. Sounds like Duluth was fun, we are headed there next weekend. Thanks for letting me know about the stretching while sleeping. I hope PT goes well for Bel and we will see from there. Did Alexis always have Asthma or just since being diagnosed? Bel usually gets a cold whenever it’s time for Decadron/steroids? We found out we get to stay for sure at Give Kids the World and we are so excited for our Disney trip coming up. Alexis you must be getting so excited for school to start? Did you get a new backpack? Hope you have a great school year sweetie! Praying for you & your family!

I just got back from a vacation in Canada (fishing) when I read her page and found out that she is now angel Skyler instead of just Skyler. Hello Karen,
It sounds like you have been busy!! I hope all goes well with the check up and the sinus’ as well as the allergies, that can be so miserable!

Have you had to look into immunizations yet? I just found out at our last apt. that Sierra can not have her kindergarten shots until 6 months (no one has told us that) Post treatment and No Live virus immunizations. Sometimes I wish there were a Post Treatment Guide book =o) I talked to her Pediatrician at her 4 week check up on Monday and there is 1 live one in the K-shots so I will have to check with Rochester on what we are supposed to do.

I was looking at your pictures again ( I love pictures) I bet you get asked this a lot and I may have asked you this already before. Has Alexis’ hair been getting straight now she is off treatment? I think the one picture with her Dinos I must have thought that was Rachel, and now she has all this curly hair!! Sierra’s started to come in real curly but it is not going straight like it was before she got sick? You just never know I guess what to expect!

Take care, and have good appointments!

Lots of CB ((((Hugs)))) and ++++Prayers++++ to you and your family every moment of the day!

Hi, Alexis!

I'm glad you're feeling well and that you're off therapy.

I enjoyed your picture with the dinosaur toys. When I was your age I had a huge collection of them. (They were not huge for dinosaurs, or they wouldn't have fit in the house.) I knew the names of all of them, although I learned later that I didn't pronounce a lot of them correctly. I loved looking at pictures of them, too. There is a famous one that was broken out onto six pages of a book I spent hours and hours with, and I saw that same picture at St. Jude.

Dearest Friends, Family and Caring Bridge Support Teams.
I am sending out a request again for a wonderful family who once again has received the information that their little Bryce has relapsed. This time it is during the first 3 months of his bone marrow transplant.

Bryce’s bone marrow has 95 percent donor cells (Mitchell, Bryce’s oldest brother who is 11) and 5 percent host cells (Bryce). The 5 percent of his bone marrow that is host cells has 5-10 percent blast cells in them. The blast cells are the cancer or Leukemia cells.

So now Mitchell will give Bryce a special blood transfusion called a Donor Lymphocyte Infusion. They are hoping his blood will attack Bryce's cells and eliminate them.

On Monday Mitch & Bryce will have blood work and special tests to make sure all is well to proceed. They want to be sure Mitchell has no virus’ and his veins need to be large enough to do Aphaeresis which is when a person donates blood from one arm, it is then spun down in a special machine to get the specific blood needed to prepare for the transfusion and then, the rest of his blood is put back into him in the other arm. If his veins are not large enough, they will put a PICC line into his neck.

The cells they need to use are white blood cells and his Helper T-cells. These will be used to help for engraftment of the donor cells and rejection of the host cells. This Aphaeresis will be done on Tuesday and then on Wednesday, Bryce will be admitted to St. Mary's Hospital to receive the infusion. Bryce will then have a bone marrow biopsy 3-4 weeks after that to check for engraftment, once again.

This family really needs your prayers. Please pray for Bryce, Mitchell and for this whole wonderfully kind family. Also, if you have a few minutes to spare in this fast passed world we live in, PLEASE take some time to stop and leave an uplifting or Spiritual message in their guestbook. No one could really explain how helpful these pages are and most importantly they are only a click away the moments we NEED them the most! At Rochester they have computers in the waiting rooms on every floor. Sometimes on our most feared appointments with Sierra, I would open up her page and read her guestbook while I was waiting and it gave me strength!

Sierra and I were guests at a Cancer Seminar Saturday and they had many wonderful speakers. One of the speakers who was a counselor talked about we always want to do something or we will say “call us if you need anything” then we wonder why they don’t call. One great thing he mentioned was meals, which is always awesome because your family still needs to eat even though you just get back from appointments 2 min before someone says “I’m hungry”. But unfortunately we are not always close to where they live. Another thing he mentioned is just sitting quietly and “holding their hand”.

I consider these pages a wonderful, strengthening beautiful “hand hold or hug” that a family can “receive” when they really need it.

Lots of CB ((((Hugs)))) and ++++Prayers++++ to you and your family every moment of the day!

Thank you for the bear and balloons, Sierra loved them!
Sierra's wish was granted to meet her great grandparents for the first time, IN ENGLAND, BABY!!! We are so excited. We leave on May 6th =o) We will see how excited the kids are when we actually get on the plane. They don't even do carnival rides =0(

So did they offer to let you keep the port or did you ask for it? I want to ask for it but thought they would think I was crazy or something?? I am so glad to hear one more precious child is finished with this and can move on now with the rest of thier life!!!

As soon as I heard that song "Breaking Away" on a movie I called my sister and said I just have to have that song for the end of Chemo. Of course as parents we always think everything is about our kids but I thought it said it so well!

Good luck with the first stick, are you going to use Emla? I had the chemo nurses look at her arms and they thought the left would be best, but I will probably put it on both to be sure.
Lots of CB ((((Hugs)))) and ++++Prayers++++ to you and your family!

AWSOME NEWS!!!

That is a wonderful poem!! You are gifted!

How did everything go! Did you get to come the same day? We are preparing for Sierra’s Port removal next month. I am very glad it will happen before the trip so we don’t have to worry about the fever criteria in a Foreign Country, but I hate the thought of Sierra getting regular blood draws every 4 weeks.

They told me she would quickly get used to it, you will have to let me know how it goes =o)

So did you have to do anything special to get to keep the port? I have been wondering if Sierra will get to keep hers or not.

Hi, just stoppng by to say Hi. I hope that everyone is healthy. Isn't it great to be done with chemo? It will be nice to get that port out. We saved ours and Tori likes to show it to her friends so they can see what she got her meds in . Well, have a great day. Stay Warm!!!!!

Hi Alexis and of course the rest of the Stern family. Just wanted to stop in and let you know we're thinking about you and hope you're staying warm. We're not! Hope everyone starts to feel better and remember the good weather is just around the corner and so all the nasty cold, flu and ear infections will be gone. Or at least we hope. Love you all Art, Mary and Jason

Hi Alexis! I am so happy you loved your Valentine from my class! I copied the pictures your mom sent and posted them in my room. Natalie was so happy to hear from you!

When Ali was 4 years old she cut off so much of her hair we had to cut it very short! Good thing your sister only cut off a little!

Rooting for you from CA!

Just wanted to wish you the best. I was checking out a webpage and saw your site. I needed to see the sight of someone OT and not relapsing. My son, Evan, also a kindergartener off treatment since October for ALL has done well...so far. We have seen and heard FAR too many ALL kids relapsing lately and I need to know of others doing well. Our prayers are with you. Enjoy the port free days.

Boy, if it isn't one thing, it's another, isn't it?!

I love these new pictures, especially with the new tooth coming in!!

I can't believe the port surgery is coming up! That's a real milestone!! Time to buy a frame, huh?

We had fun seeing you at the pizza party. It already seems so long ago. Where does the time go?

Karen- Thanks so much for leaving a message for Logan on his caringbridge site! Your message made me chuckle when you said " it is cold or well it is MN." I am not sure if I ever told you this but I lived in Minnesota for about a year and a half! My family moved there when I was 14! I loved it! We lived in Duluth! I thought it was really beautiful and just couldnt get over how nice the people were in Minnesota! I always said I was going to move back to Minnesota but it never happened! :) Anyways, the reason why it made me chuckle is because we moved to Minnesota from Las Vegas, NV! People would just start laughing when they heard we were from Vegas because they knew we werent used to really cold winters and were about to learn what a real winter is like! :)

Anyways! I hope all is well!

Take care and best wishes always!

Hugs!
