The passage today is a little different. But the way I look at it, life itself is a battle and the Lord doesn't change. He was with the Israelites as they headed into the Promised Land, and He's with you, helping you and giving you strength to face whatever lies ahead. Always here praying!
Deuteronomy 20:1-4: When thou goest out to battle against thine enemies, and seest horses, and chariots, and a people more than thou, be not afraid of them: for the LORD thy God is with thee, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt. And it shall be, when ye are come nigh unto the battle, that the priest shall approach and speak unto the people, And shall say unto them, Hear, O Israel, ye approach this day unto battle against your enemies: let not your hearts faint, fear not, and do not tremble, neither be ye terrified because of them; For the LORD your God is he that goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.

God's Lent Child
I'll lend you for a little while a child of mine, God said,
For you to love him while he lives, and mourn for when he's dead.
It may be six or seven years, or forty-two or three;
But will you, till I call him back, take good care of him for me?
He'll bring his charms to gladden you, and should his stay be brief,
You'll have the lovely memories as a solace for your grief.
I cannot promise he will stay, since all from earth return;
But there are lessons taught below I want this child to learn.
I've searched the whole world over, for teachers kind and true;
And from the throngs that crowd life's lane I have chosen you...
Now will you give him all your love? Nor think the labor pain?
Nor hate me should the angels call, to take this child back again?
To which the parents did reply...
Dear Lord, Thy will be done.
For all the joys thy child will bring, the risk of grief we'll run.
We'll shelter him with tenderness,
We'll love him while we may...
for all the love this child will bring,
forever grateful we will stay.
But should the Angels call for him,
much sooner than we've planned,
We'll brave the bitter grief that comes,
and try to understand.

Hi Melissa,

I don't know if you still check this or not, but I wanted to sign in to let you know that I still think of your Baby D. each and every day. He was a true gift from God and we feel very privileged to have been able to meet both of you. My birthday (Dec. 10th)is the day after Donnie's, so each year I remember what should have been his special day too. My heart goes out to you and Dylan. I'm so glad that you have built a life for yourself that brings you joy and know that Donnie, too, would be proud of his Mommy.

Always keeping you in our prayers . . .

And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth. Please know that I am thinking about you during this holday season. I would like to share this special prayer with you.

Dear Father who art in Heaven...
Please join our family on this Thanksgiving day
And bless each one as we sit down to pray
As we remember those who have joined You above
So dearly missed and deeply loved.

Please provide us strength on this Thanksgiving day
Bless us with memories of those faraway...
Please grant patience to family and friends as we grieve
And help us reach out to others who are bereaved.

We give thanks to You on this Thanksgiving day....
For Your presence in our lives each and everyday.
For Your comfort, guidance, and never ending love...
And for taking care of our loved ones...in Heaven above.

As we light this candle on this Thanksgiving day...
And it glows in memory of those in Heaven today....
May their lights always shine down on us and give us light...
And may we feel their presence along with Yours tonight.

May the peace and tranquility of this Thanksgiving day
Be an everlasting light within each of us along the way...
Lets bow our heads and give our Thanks to God above..
For our blessings, whether on earth or in Heaven above...
Amen

Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. These words are always so very comforting! Praying!
Romans 8:26-28 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God. And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

Melissa,

Good luck on the bike riding! I just made my on-line donation and am pleased once again to help sponsor you as you do this important work - both for you and for others.

You and Dylan remain in my prayers. I know Donovan continues to be proud of you both.

I know that the right doors will open re: the job situation. Will be exciting to see where you will end up. I know the waiting and wondering can be agonizing. Be sure to let us all know via the carebridge page =)

Does your carebridge page have a place where we can sign up to be notified when you make updates? I only follow a few pages so I am no expert but I know that on some of the others I get an automatic email that says when they have made an update. I would love to be able to do that with yours as well.

Just keep on enjoying the journey and making the world a better place!

Oh I hope the job works out!
This is a long section but it's filled with such words of comfort....praying right now!
Revelation 21:1-7 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful. And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely. He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.

Always here praying!
Psalms 18:2-6 The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower. I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies. The sorrows of death compassed me, and the floods of ungodly men made me afraid. The sorrows of hell compassed me about: the snares of death prevented me. In my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried unto my God: he heard my voice out of his temple, and my cry came before him, even into his ears.

Isaiah 40:28-31 Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding. He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

Hello Melissa and Dylan!!

I found Donovan's site through another a little over two years ago. I followed your heartbreak (from Donovan's passing and the ugliness that happened on HIS site -- what morons), and cried as I read. Then one day I could no longer access his site, and I couldn't stop wondering how everyone was. Imagine my delight to find access available again this morning, to find you and Dylan in California, and still fighting the war! Very happy to see the beautiful photos again. I hope this message finds you happy, although I know you are still missing Donovan with every fiber of your being.

Am glad you had someone there with you on Christmas...
A brand new year stands before us. Sometimes a new year is very hard to face. Other times a new year is welcomed with open arms, with hopes that it will be better than the last one was. However you look at it, know that every day of this new year is in the Lord's Hands. He's already there waiting for you with open arms. And I'm here praying as always.
Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.

Howdy,
It's Grammie.

I know we talk often you and me, but I just want to write down a few things, so as the days go by and time passes, I can come back to your website years from now to see what we talked about. Grammie's memory is not the greatest.
Sometimes, we need little notes to remind of what happened yesterday. Activities in our lives are sometimes so rushed that we do not get to sit back and look at where we were just a few days ago, or months ago, or even years ago. Grammie is having difficulty just trying to remember if I wrote letters to your brother and cousins this past week. You know, I think I forgot with all the things I have been doing. So, I need to get going on that before it is time to write another letter.
You see, the days move really fast when you get older. Friday comes around faster than I can catch up to Wednesday.
I came by today to tell you about the wonderful visit Papa and I had with Mommy and Dylan. You were mentioned all the time. Especially, since Grammie has been making cookies on are regular daily basis. Grammie has some friends that takes the cookies to work to sell them. We have earned over $300.00 for Mommy's race. We are still making more cookies. I am glad the people like Grammie's cookies. Because they are going to help other children that have Leukemia.
I was glad that Mommy was able to visit her friend for a few days. Her friend has cancer too. We are all praying for her and her family.
Thursday, we went to the zoo. Mommy and Dylan met up with some friends from the 5200 Unit at Duke Hospital. They had a great time visiting and watching the animals too. Dylan and Tess rode on my scooter with me. They liked steering and going really fast.
Kid-o, Grammie misses so much. I have your picture with Mommy and Dylan in my office. I get to see you everyday. Yet, it is not the same.

Well, I better get back to my cookies. The timer is ringing.
I love you so much.

It's Grammie.

I am so excited for your mommy. She is working so hard to run the race for cancer children of all ages. Mommy and Dylan are having a fundraiser at his school. I told mommy I would like to do a fundraiser for her, but Grammie is not very creative and I surely do not like selling things. So, I told a few friends that I was going to do a bake sale for Mommy. That said that was a great idea. However, Grammie is not very good at standing next to a store front to sell my wares. As it turns out, so many friends know about your two precious years and they wanted to donate without the bake sale. Grammie said it would not be a bake sale if they didn't get their cookies. So, I have been making lots of cookies. Some of my friends and their friends have been ordering bread. They say I make the best bread. I just think they do not get homemade bread very often. So, this past weekend, the young lady at the swimming where I used to live to her mom I was have a bake sale and she wanted us to bring some cookies to her store. She said she would sale them for us. We made $40.00 from her store. That was so very nice of her mother.
My friend, Cheryl, I told you about before. She is going to take some cookies to her job and sell them for me there. She says all office workers like homemade cookies and treats.
I just wanted you to know that the bake sale is going well. I want you to know I am trying hard to help other children like others had help you as much as they could.

I miss you so much. I wished you could have stayed a little longer. However, I am grateful for the time I got to spend with you. Thank you so much for being apart of my life.

Hey Kid-o. I haven't told you on paper about our new house. Papa and I got a house. It is all on one floor. It is a fairly old house, since it was built before I was born. It is all updated and it has a beautiful tree in the front yard. I sent Dylan pictures on his phone. It has a big porch with a swing on it. So, when I feel the breeze, I pretend you are there swinging with me. I think of all the stories I told you and all the songs I hummed come flooding into my mind. As the swing sways, I smile as I think of the happy times we had together. I love you so much.

Grammie is moving soon. Papa and I found a little house with a fenced yard and a garage for the winter time. Papa and I are excited about owning our little place.

We are down here as always thinking about you and trying to do what we can for all the little children who are trying so hard to stay strong for their families. It is a tough journey we traveled, but you came through it willingly and with flying colors.

Yesterday, I saw two little boys on a camophauge jeep. The big brother was driving the little brother around the neighborhood. I had big tears rolling down my cheeks. I tried hard to hold them back, but they kept streaming down. It was not that long ago you and Dylan were driving around in your yellow jeep. I remember we brought the yellow jeep in the apartment, because it was too cold to be outside. We put the movie cars on for you and you were like at a drive in theater.

Kid-o I miss you so much. I hope this bake sale will do well, so mommy can race her weary legs to the finish line for all the children who are still fighting with their luekemia disease.

Miss you and love you so much!

This whole psalm is so good for all who are overwhelmed. Continuing to pray!
Psalms 102:1-2 ((A Prayer of the afflicted, when he is overwhelmed, and poureth out his complaint before the LORD.)) Hear my prayer, O LORD, and let my cry come unto thee. Hide not thy face from me in the day when I am in trouble; incline thine ear unto me: in the day when I call answer me speedily.

Howdy,
It's Grammie.

As you have noticed Grammie has not written for such a long time, it is not that I have not been thinking about you. Everyday, you are in my life in some special way.
As usual, I have been traveling. In January, I went to visit Auntie Valerie and her family in Arizona. I was there for a month, until I went back to Indianapolis to pick up Dylan so Mommy could get back into training for her new position on her job. Then, I went to California to meet Mommy and Dylan. Dylan and I went back to Arizona to visit with Auntie Valerie and her family for Easter. After Easter, we returned to your new home in California. I stayed with your family a couple of weeks and then I went home. However, I was only there for a short time, when it was time for me to leave again.
I am in Washington state right now. I came to visit your cousin, Tabby. Do you remember she came to visit you when you were getting ready to go to heaven? Her mom wanted me to come visit her too, so I have stayed a little longer than planned, because my brother Joe wanted me to come visit him too. So, I have been wandering about the state of Washington for almost two weeks now. This coming Sunday, Memorial Day, I will be going back to Grampapa.
Then, at the end of June, I go to Connecticut to visit cousin Layla and of course, Uncle Tom and Auntie Sarah.
Then, I come home for a couple of weeks and then, Papa and your cousins Hollie and Rachel are heading back to Connecticut to visit uncle and his family again for me. Then, in September, Papa and I are going to visit Dylan for his birthday.
Then, it will be time for Grammie to stay home for a few months. Grammie is getting too old to be traveling so much.
So, how have you been doing? I am so happy mommy has finally got the chance to visit with you. She misses you so much, Grammie does too. Whenever I am holding a chunky, tan baby, my eyes want to just drip in heaps of splashing, salty water. I miss your smile and the warmth you gave him when you looked into my eyes as I chattered about some crazy story I made up for you or tell you of the dreams I would have. I could hear you speaking to my heart and telling Grammie that is so silly, or Grammie it was really happening it was not a dream. Darling you are my special angel.
When I was with Dylan, he talks about you all the time as you know. One day, it was a beautiful day. Of course, in California there are lots of beautiful days. Dylan and I were laying on the grassy hill by his park. The clouds were drifting by and I told Dylan I can imagine myself being in the clouds and playing hide and seek with you. He said, he wanted to play with us. I told him he could; he just had to use his imagination. So, he closed his eyes really tight at first, then I said, Dylan, just close your eyes like you are sleeping. Now, imagine the clouds are steps. Pretend to walk up the stairs. He said, he could see the cloud steps. I told him I was holding his hand. I asked if he could see me. He said yes. I said okay, let's go see Donny. When we found you, we could see other children. Dylan could not see them like I could. Then, we asked you to come play with us. As we pretended to play hide and seek, we finally opened our eyes to see the clouds shifting about in the sky. Dylan pointed to different shapes and I pointed to how the clouds moved about. It was time to put our pretending away until another day. We thanked you for coming to play with us. Dylan was quiet for a while after we sat up in the grass. I asked him if he was okay. He said yes, but he was sad that you could not come play with him. Yes, I agreed. One day, we will all play together again. And, Donny you will be able to make cookies with Grammie and Dylan. I know you know that too.
Well, it is finally getting morning here. Grammie is still on Chicago time. So, I wake up very early and I am very tired at night time, because it is late at my home, but still too early to go to bed here.
I miss you Kid-o.
When I am humming my little tunes during the day, I think of our days together. There was not a day in your short time here, there we did not hum a tune together, even when Grammie was off with your cousins in another state. I love you so much.

Here's a little tune I think of often during my days away from you.

Count your blessings name them one by one.
Count your blessings name see what God has done.
Count your blessings name them one by one.
Count your many blessings to see what God has done.

I count my blessings, because Grammie knows God has blessed her over and over again.

Thanks Kid-o for giving me your precious love.

No matter what life brings, no matter how dark it gets, we always have hope in the Lord! Praying!
Lamentations 3:21-26 This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope. It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness. The LORD is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him. The LORD is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him. It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD.

We read this psalm at our Lenten service tonight. I wanted to share a portion of it with you. Praying for safe travels and a wonderful new start!
Psalms 116:1-5 I love the LORD, because he hath heard my voice and my supplications. Because he hath inclined his ear unto me, therefore will I call upon him as long as I live. The sorrows of death compassed me, and the pains of hell gat hold upon me: I found trouble and sorrow. Then called I upon the name of the LORD; O LORD, I beseech thee, deliver my soul. Gracious is the LORD, and righteous; yea, our God is merciful.

Sorry I've been away from the computer for a few days. Still been praying but wanted to share such special verses that remind us all that much more importantly the Holy Spirit Himself is praying for each of us perfectly according to His Will.
Romans 8:26-27 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

Melissa and Dylan,

I checked in today after a couple of months and was glad to hear that you both are doing pretty well, enjoying today and looking forward to tomorrow. I love the slideshow of Donovan's first photos. What a beautiful baby he was! and Dylan was so careful with him -- a wonderful big brother.

Keep on keeping on.

I cant imagine how hard this year has been for you, so much pain, and yet so much love, all mixed together. Just as you did everything for Donovan, to give him the best chance to win his battle, I can see that you are doing all you can to give Dylan the best too....through all the pain, you are showing him how to keep going with a hopeful heart.

I wish you all the best in your new venture. Prayers for many blessings for your family.

May the hope of heaven, and God's gift of eternal life, fill your heart with the promise that your family will be together again one day.

hugs,

That's great about the new job! hope the move is smooth and that you'll be very happy with the job and new home.
Know that I'm still here praying!
Psalms 36:5-7 Thy mercy, O LORD, is in the heavens; and thy faithfulness reacheth unto the clouds. Thy righteousness is like the great mountains; thy judgments are a great deep: O LORD, thou preservest man and beast. How excellent is thy lovingkindness, O God! therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of thy wings.

Melissa,
Congratulations on the new job! You are so right about Donovan being w/you no matter where you are. He's in your heart and soul and that will never change. Making big decisions is always a little tough just because of the unknown but remember what you do know--you are a wonderful, strong, loving mother and even if those aren't on the resume they are what will get you through every day life. I wish you peace and much happiness. I hope you will keep posting to let those know who follow your story how you and Dylan are doing. Take care and God bless you.

Congratulations on the new position, Melissa! You did exactly what you said you were going to do one long year ago. You spent a year training, running and successfully raising a significant amount of money for all the children and families battling this cancer monster, along with grieving for your loss and attempting to find your "new normal" path in life. This new position is right on schedule with your self-set goal. You can be extremely proud of your achievements. Your move and new job will work out fine, since your angel is continuing to guide you and all of us in caringbridge land will continue to support you! Thanks so much for including us on your journey. I hope your new job is somewhere interesting and fun. But have no doubts, you will make it a home wherever you end up with the love of friends, family and ^angels^ watching over you. All the best.

Melissa, you have so done many wonderful things over this past year, straight from your heart.......I know that they came about from the most painful experience you will ever have gone through in your life......but you found a way of healing from that pain AND honoring Donovan, at the same time as helping others that are dealing with blood cancers.......I, and so many others, admire you for that. Howdy,
It's Grammie.
First, I want to thank all your friends on your website for letting me come back to write to you here on your website. I know Grammie does get carried away, but I did not want to monopolize your site for my whacky-whack. I do miss you so much.
Well, this is how your letter went that I sent to by airmail.

Howdy,
It's Grammie

It was a tough weekend for Grammie and I know it was for all your family. We miss you terribly here. Grammie spent the whole day watching CARS. Actually, I had it on the whole day, I did not sit to watch it much. I would look up at the special parts when I would remember you trying to get my attention to see your favorite parts.
It was fun to watch Lightening McQueen and his girlfriend car hugging, because I remember when you would watch that part, once you got my attention, you puckered your little lips and shook your head like you were kissing too. That was very funny! I think you liked Grammie laughing, because you kept doing it.
There were so many fun parts you liked in this movie.

My friend, Ms. Cheryl came over to visit that day. She asked if I was watching CARS again. I told her, it is on, I am not really watching it. She had very seen it before. We visited a lot about you. She did not mind that I kept playing it over and over.

Later that evening, another friend came over Ms. Marilyn, while Ms. Cheryl was here. Ms. Marilyn wanted to see some of the videos I had taken while I was there in North Carolina. So, we put them on. You were so precious. You really like that Robot. You were very good with your sign language too.

Once our friends went home, I did sit watch the CARS movie one more time. Then, it was time to go to bed.

Donny, I was reading about family members having to go to heaven. Some are very old, some are young, some are so newly born. Each stage of life, it is hard to let someone special in your life go, but it is apart of life. The lesson I was reading said, that we should be happy and rejoice because we had the opportunity to have these family members and friends in our lives at this time. Even though it seems like a long time before we get to see you again, we have eternity to be with you and all those that have gone before us. The lesson says that we will see you as you were went you went to sleep to Heavenly Father’s home. You will be the little boy we were when you left, with the exception that you will be healthy. That is such a blessing. I know that will comfort Mommy and Daddy and even your big brother.

I have a friend, Ms. Pat, he son just passed away in October. He was a big boy. His name is Matthew. He was in a very bad car accident. Matthew was 22 years old. He really loved children. If you happened to see a young man confused up there, let him know your Grammie knows his Mommy. His family is very sad for him. So, let him know that I have been keeping taps on his family. It has been a tough year for lots of families.

I tried to figure out how to send you the photo of Papa and Dylan making the snow tower, but I could not figure out how to make photo bucket work. I have an account and I kept clicking on keys, but Grammie needs more lessons.
When I get it figured out, I will send you the picture. I need to go for now, I still have more letters to write. I love you so much, Kid-o. You keep all your friends up there laughing.

Hello Rasmussen Family!

You have been very near my heart this last couple weeks, as Donovan's 'angelversary' has neared. Today I took the girls shopping to get some new shoes and thought of Donovan, and all the fun we had shopping for his little gifts. I am glad we were able to bring a few smiles into his little life - which in turn made smiles on mommy's face, and Dylan's face, and daddy's face - and grammie & papa's face. A picture may be worth a thousand words, but a smile can go on for eternity. It is nice to hear from Grammie - thank you for sharing with us. I enjoyed hearing all the stories again. For a brief moment, I felt as if I were back in time reading them again as if they just happend. The story of the blankie was too cute! Sharing these memories helps carry on Donovan's legacy. Never stop sharing with each other.

I hope you found time today to feel our Lord's peace, amidst the tears and heartache I know were there. In some small way, I hope it helps knowing our lives changed forever because of Donovan - we remember to be kinder to those facing adversity, to hug the ones we love a little more often, to enjoy a laugh and smile a little longer, and appreciate THIS DAY as a gift from God, for which we are very grateful.

I have much love and respect for you all, and as always, am sending ((((((VERY BIG HUGS))))))) to everyone in your family on this special day.

God bless you!!!

Howdy,
It's Grammie.
It has been a very long time since I have written on your website. However, you know that I have been writing you letters, right along with all your cousins every week. Of course, no one sees those letters.
I wanted to write on your website for your birthday, but Grammie just could not put the right words into place. Then when you came in my dreams as you always do, I just wrote you a little special note in your weekly letter.
Yes, as you know, I did make the big yellow cake for you with chocolate frosting and Tow Mater was on top. Of course, I had so much cake I had to share it with all my neighbors and friends, because you and your new friends up in heaven could not make this cake disappear like the children that are still here on earth. I was so happy for that dream. Thank you so much.
I am comforted that I know you are happy now and you have lots of friends and family to be with, but Sweet Darling, it is so very tough to here without you.
I know Grammie only got to be with you for since a short time, but I am grateful Heavenly Father allowed me that time.
As the days, weeks, and months have gone by, my heart has ached so much for you. I have had many friends and family members leave me for that better place called Heaven, but you have been a difficult absences. I know Mommy, Daddy, and big brother, Dylan have their aches of loneliness for you, but I want you to know this old Grammie does too. I miss our humming time. I miss our little talks, even if I did all the talking. I miss our cuddling time. I miss you. I know all the religious stuff. We will meet again. We will have those times together again, but it does seem so far away right now.
Excuse Grammie, while she puts herself back together. Heavens, I sure don't want you to see me dripping. I am so happy you are there with all the relatives and your new friends, even old friends. I was happy to see you walking in my dream. We did not get to see that here on earth. I was happy to feel the same happy spirit you had here, you still have it.
I did send the message to Mommy that you asked me to give her. You know, when mommy was little, she used to Grammie all the time. Even when she went to college, when I took her back to school. Hours and hours of driving, Mommy would always be singing. And, even night before I go to sleep, I hum a tune for mommy. "Count your blessing, Name the one by one", just like I hummed to you while you were here. Remember the other song I hummed to you while you rested. "I Am A Child of God", I know He sends us here for a purpose. When we accomplish our task, we get to go back to Him. Some people finish faster than others. You were one of the very lucky ones. You finished really fast.
You know, how Grammie is. I can talk and talk forever. I just feel like I am holding you in my arms and we are rocking in that old green glider watching CARS over and over. Yet, my arms are empty, I feel your special spirit comforting me with your huge huge warm smiles. Until, I can not feel lonely for you, just happiness.
Mommy is trying so hard to be happy again. Dylan is too. He is such a big boy. He came for Christmas with Mommy. He had such a wonderful time building snowmen in the frigid cold weather here in Chicago. Him and Papa were making a snow tower. He said if they built it high enough you could touch it and feel how cold snow is.
As you know, North Carolina, does not get so cold. On the other hand, it did snow before you went to heaven didn't it.
Dylan had lots of fun, but he doesn't laugh like he used to when you were around.

Do you remember the time, I was taking you for a ride. Probably to get some sunshine and to get Dylan some chicken nuggets from McDonalds. I had you both in your seatbelts and I was getting into the drivers seat, when Dylan was upset. I asked what was wrong. Dylan said you took his blanket. I asked you if you had it. You showed me your hands and they were empty. I said, Donny, if you have his blanket, you must give it back. You just shrugged your shoulders. Dylan was upset. He said you had it. I said, Okay, Donny, if you don't give Dylan his blanket back, I am going to have to ground you. You will not get to watch CARS. So, what did you do, yes, you pulled his blanket from behind your back. You were teasing Dylie Bar. You laughed, and Dylan laughed and then Grammie laughed. It was a silly thing to do. You knew Grammie would not ground you, so did Dylan.

Do you remember the day we left Indianapolis to go to North Carolina. Well, you were not feeling very good that day at all. So, you probably don't remember. Let me tell you about it.
The doctors gave the okay for you to go get your new transplant. Papa and Grammie's friend owned an airplane. We did not have much money to pay for a trip to North Carolina, because the gas for an airplane cost a lot. Our friend said he would take you, so long as the weather was good. It was in November, so the weather could get very bad. But Heavenly Father made a special opening in the skies for us to be able to fly out when the doctors gave the okay.

It was a little airplane. There was only enough room for 4 people. You and Mommy sat in the back and Grammie and our friend the pilot, sat in the front. It was the first time, I had ever flown in such a tiny plane. The earth look so magnificent. The skies were so clear we could see for miles. The sun was warm and I felt like I was in the noisy part of heaven, because the propeller was so loud.
You fussed a little and Mommy handed you to me. I held you in my arms. Remember while I rocked you gently, and hummed little tunes, I would send you thoughts of how beautiful it is to be so high in the sky. How wonderful the warm sunshine felt. You went back to sleep. I know you were having dreams of one day being high on the mountain tops and playing happily upon the fluffy clouds. I, of course, hoped that day would not come, but you knew before us, what was to transpire. Thanks for not telling us to far in advance.
When the flight was over, it was time to get out of the plane. However, because Grammie's legs are not very good. They were stiff from being in one position for 3 1/2 hours. The door way was not very big and I had to be the first one out. So, remember what happen. Well, let Grammie tell on herself again. I climbed backwards out of the airplane. Good thing the wing was right below the door. I got my bottom on the wing and I was going to pvot myself about so I could go down feet first. However, because Grammie is so roly poly. Instead of pivoting, I rolled right off the wing.
Dylie Bar, Papa, and Daddy were at the railing of the airplane parking lot, since it was a very tiny airport. Matter of fact, the office was the size of a shed. Dylie Bar saw be roll off the wing, he came running to Grammie rescue. "I will help you, Ammie." he said. Before I could do anything, he was pulling my hand trying to lift Grammie off the ground.
It was a pretty funny sight. We could have been on Funniest videos on tv.
Anyway, after Grammie got her composer back, we all had a good laugh.
One of these days, we are going to find an applique for our friends plane of an angel, so he can place it proud on the plane that took you on your first trip to heaven.

I have so much to tell you, but I will do you it in your weekly letters. I know your friends here on your website, cannot read them as well, but I am sure they are probably glad Grammie has stopped writing those book long notes to you.
Mommy is going to be on a big giant airplane today. It will be very special for her to get to be up there on your special anniversary with Heavenly Father and all the relatives. While she closes her eyes and thinks of you up there. Let her feel your spirit and let her know you are doing GREAT! She misses you so much and it is hard for her to allow herself happiness without you. Dylan wants his mommy back. The one that used to laugh and play. Mommy tries hard to be happy, but Dylan is pint size, and he can feel what is real.
I love you darling.
Here is a tune you can teach your friends. Now, what you see Papa Baker, you tell him. I sent this to him too.

I love you so much,
I can't conceal it,
I love you so much,
It's a wonder you don't feel it.

Papa Baker used to sing that to Grammie when I was a little girl.

Love you Kid-o.

Melissa and Dylan,

First of all I want to wish Donovan a super happy birthday. I am so sorry that you have to experience your babys birthday without him. That is something no parent ever wants to experience. I admire you for sharing your story and life and feelings with everyone. YOu are truly an ispiration and your baby boy up in heaven is so proud of his mommy. I hope that you at least felt Donovans presence with you on his birthday. I have two little boys myself and I can not imagine the grief you feel. I read your entries and just weep for you. You are an amazing family and Dylan is lucky to have such a great mommy. I hope you and Dylan have a great Christmas. I know it will be hard. Even though I don't know you, you are always in my thoughts. I had to laugh I was in target shopping the other day and I saw a Greys Anatomy game and I immediately thought about you and how you would like that game!!! Anyway, I hope you guys have a great holiday and a Happy New Year. I hope that this new year brings you much happiness you deserve nothing but the best.

This year's Worldwide Candle Lighting will be on December 9, your little one's birthday. In each time zone across the world at 7 PM candles are lit to remember our children who have died. Our local chapter of Compassionate Friends is having a pot luck and candle lighting at the Sarah P. Duke Center in Duke Gardens. The pot luck is at 6 and then we'll light candles and tell about our children at 7. You and Dylan are welcome. Our website is www.chapelhilltcf.org

Melissa-Thank you for fighting this fight each and everyday only to try and make it a better place for others. You are truly an inspiration. Good luck on your race. My dad continues on as a survivor of lymphoma and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for working so hard to help people like him. One of my dear friends was just diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic breast cancer. This beast just keeps on and we all need to continue to fight it until it no longer exists. I was helping take care of her today and thought of all the caring bridge families I have come across that live and breathe this disease each and every day. You have true courage and I wish you many blessings in your life with your little Dylan. If you ever end up heading to MN let me know. You will have a friend here always. Thanks for the recent journal entry Melissa. You are an amazing mom for sure and an inspiration to us all. Donovan could not have had a better mom. I wish you the best for San Francisco and beyond. I know that new start is just a few steps away. I keep you and Dylan in my prayers every day. God Bless you girl!

In the Bible it says that through Christ's resurrection, "death has lost it's sting", because to die is to live with God forever.

Of course, those that loved Donny feel the sting of not having him here....the missing him, not watching him grow up, not having him to hold and laugh with...that must hurt immeasurably.

But I hope that you take comfort in knowing that the pain of missing him is temporary..that this life is so short compared to the eternity that you will have with all of your boys together! in heaven forever!

We still pray for you, for God to comfort your family and give you continued strength.

Wishing you the best in SF!

Thanks for the log in info again Melissa. YOu are truly an inspiration. I know you will do great in your marathon and Donovan will be right there with you the whole way. You are amazing not only are you doing what you have to do to keep Dylan happy and healthy but you are helping out others who are in the same situation you are in. Hopefully all you are doing will lead to a cure for this horrible disease that takes the lives of precious children. I commend you because as the mom of two little boys I think that if something happened to one of them I would close myself up in a room and not ever want to come out. You are a strong preson you freely share your feelings and emotions and you are a wonderful mommy. I have learned so much from reading your story. I came across Donovans site in Nov/Dec last year and I sat and read each and every journal entry you made. I laughed and cried....I would read a little each night before bed time. I am glad you have kept the site up as I enjoy checking up on you and Dylan. Good luck in your marathon. Just remember on those extra sad days that your teddybear is right there with you.

Hi guys....just popping by to say I'm thinking of you. I'm in such shock about Noelle. It's really sickening to see what cancer does to theses beautiful kids and their families. Keep up the great work, Melissa. With any luck maybe one day there will be a cure....even if it's not in my lifetime.

Happy late Birthday to Dylan !

Melissa, i took care of a little boy who couldn't eat. I'm certainly not an expert, but for this boy, he needed me to feed him the tiniest bites of food just like he was a baby. Eventually he learned to like almost everything. I think it was a "bonding" thing that he needed to work through.
Also, i know there are eating specialists if you can find someone there that might help him regain his eating skills.
Take care and best wishes

Carol

Oh, Melissa. I am so sorry about Noelle. I just can't believe it. But then of course, it is unfathomable that children die everyday of this nasty horrible disease. I can just imagine Donovan & Noelle together - playing, watching tv, screaming with each other! LOL! My heart goes out to you kiddo - I know how much these babies mean to you, and know they also have touched my heart FOREVER.
Just wanted you to know I am thinking of you and sending you & Dylan our very ((((((BIG HUGS)))))) all the way from Burlington!!!

Lots of love, Nickey

Hi Melissa,
I've been following Donovan's story for quite some time now and just wanted you to know that I am thinking of you and praying for you, Dylan, and Donovan tonight--the night before Dylan becomes a 'big boy' :) I wish I could have donated more towards your goal for CA, but I sure hope that you know my best wishes are with you as you continue to raise funds! Enjoy Dylan's birthday tomorrow and may God continue to be with you and your family.

Know that I'm continuing to pray!
2 Samuel 22:31-34 As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is tried: he is a buckler to all them that trust in him. For who is God, save the LORD? and who is a rock, save our God? God is my strength and power: and he maketh my way perfect. He maketh my feet like hinds' feet: and setteth me upon my high places.

I was just checking in to see how things are going with you and Dylan. I'm glad that things are good! Hope your training for your next race is going well and is not to much "work"! Kidding, I know its hard. I'm also sorry that you are having to explain again why you don't tell everyone how Darren is doing, especially since you have allready told everyone what is going on. Anyways!! I hope you and Dylan have a wonderful weekend together, and good luck on your next event. Incase I don't check in before then. My thoughts and prayers always!!
