Journal

Wow, it’s been a whirlwind of a few days. On Thursday Zeva had her port removal surgery. When we walked into the OR prep area to go to our room the staff and nurses at the desk cheered for her. Then when we got to her room the bed was filled with prizes and pictures of Nacho (the therapy dog who Zeva loves). Zeva has hoping for a Lego set, and there was! Surgery went well and Zeva was emotional afterwards. As the nurse was taking out her IV Zeva asked if she could keep the stretchy bandage. The nurse looked puzzled and I explained that Zeva likes to “doctor” her stuffed animals. When the nurse heard this, she left and came back with a bag full of medical supplies (without the needles). It was like someone gave Zeva the world, she was so thrilled! Once we were released from the hospital Zeva felt well enough to go to Costco, so of course we got her the biggest Squishmallow ever.

Last fall when Zeva was in treatment and not having a good day she told me she needed a trophy when this was all over. Friday night we had a small party with our closest people to celebrate the port removal. Big brother Sy made his famous homemade breakfast pizza for over 20 people and Wade presented Zeva with a “Bravest Girl” trophy.

It seems surreal that we don’t have any hospital appointments until the end of June. Her oncologist wants her to get scans and blood tests every 3 months for the first year, as the chance of reoccurrence is highest the first year. Zeva will be seeing a functional doctor in a couple weeks to help us get on a solid path to healing and health.

We know how insanely blessed we are to be able to celebrate all these victories. We continue to pray for the other kids we know who are fighting much harder cancer battles, specifically Jack and Gavin. We pray that one day they will be able to celebrate as well. Until then, the God of peace will surround and carry them through the journey, just as He did for us. 🤍
