Journal entry by Nicole Pula

Last week Zacks spleen became dangerously enlarged and the talk of surgery was thrown about. Friday Dec. 29th Zack went in for a series of tests to find out if they would in fact be doing emergency surgery to remove the spleen. As Zack already has a compromised immune system, taking the spleen out could be just as dangerous as leaving it enlarged. First thing the Dr. did was CT scan and MRI, then a round of radiation directly into the spleen to try to bring down the size of it. While waiting for the radiation to take effect the Dr. did a multitude of other tests to find out Zacks white blood cell count and to find out how much the cancers have spread. Zacks white blood cell count was in the 200,000 range, normal range is 4,500-11,000. The cancer has now spread to the organs which is causing Zack to have more headaches and severe fatigue. Zacks lungs are inflamed and have an infection that the Dr. gave him antibiotics for.  All of these issues are the main cause for the Spleen being enlarged as once a week chemo is no longer enough with the cancer getting worse and spreading. Thankfully they did not have to take his Spleen out as the radiation brought it back down closer to normal size. The Dr. ordered another round of radiation and chemo friday afternoon along with antibiotics and Zack now has to do radiation/chemo therapy twice a week making it pretty much impossible to work at all as he is sick a lot of the time. Today is his second round this week, but despite it all Zack has  kept his head up and hope up through it all. Zack is one of the strongest bravest people I know, I am so lucky and blessed to  know him. Zack is getting discouraged however as he's unable to work and gets tired of not being able to do anything so if anyone would like to visit or even call just to chat I think it would help his spirits a lot.
