Zachary’s Story

Site created on May 8, 2019

Hello everyone!

For those who don't know me, my name is Zachary Kenaston and I am a 23 year old heart patient from Huntington Beach, California!

I was born in 1996 with  a congenital heart defect, basically, I  had an under-developed right ventricle.  I had to undergo three open heart surgeries by the time  I was 3 years old  to temporarily fix the problem . These surgeries included a Glenn Shunt, and a Fontan Procedure.  Unfortunately, as explained to my parents, they were only a temporary fix to extend my life but would not guarantee me a long life. I have been on blood thinner medicine my entire life, but that did not keep me from danger. I have also suffered and survived two strokes.  I received my first pacemaker when I was only 18 years old while still in high school, and later received another pacemaker as a replacement in 2018. All in all, these surgeries have  given me somewhat of a normal life and I am thankful. Unfortunately, my heart started backing up blood into my liver and I was diagnosed with cirrhosis in 2018.

Since then, heart failure has caused my abdominal, legs and feet to swell up with liquid and I was told by doctors that I will be needing both a heart and liver transplant if I am to live a full life expectancy.

So I've started this page to post updates, fuel support, and raise funds for my medical endeavors in the future. I've also started the hashtag #zachlives on Facebook for anyone who wants to send good vibes my way and post supportive messages.

I've also set up a GoFundMe account for any and all donations to help me overcome medical costs after the transplant. I will need 24 hour care for 3 months in a home close to the hospital after surgery, so any funds donated is greatly appreciated!  Visit the Ways To Help tab to view my GoFundMe. Every little bit helps!

Thank you everyone for your support and I will keep you posted!
