Will’s Story

Site created on October 11, 2023

Our family has started a Caring Bridge site for our nephew, Will. Life has truly thrown a curveball for Will and his family. I would like this to be a place where you can receive updates and information on his diagnosis and treatment as well as ask questions. There are still a lot of unknowns. We do know he has been diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). “AML” starts in the bone marrow, but most often it quickly moves into the blood. (cancer.org). He is starting his first round of chemotherapy tomorrow (October 12, 2023). Due to the high risk of infection he will need to be hospitalized for a month.

His self-determination is incredible and he’s wanting to partner with the doctors to get better.  He is so remarkable and I am blown away by his mental resiliency. He is facing this head on and will get through this. Thank you for your thoughts, prayers and love. ❤️💪❤️

Journal entry by Jodi Bearden

Hi Friends -

We are at clinic this morning and just heard from Will's FINAL bone marrow report.... WILL BEARDEN IS CANCER FREE! There was NO cancer found in his newly recovered bone marrow and everyone here is celebrating in this news.

Team, it is official... Will Bearden has kicked cancer's ass, and we could not be happier right now. We were fully expecting this news but what an amazing thing to see it in black and white on the report and to hear the doctor's words. What a joyous day and celebration for him, our family, and all of this community who has traveled on the journey with us.

We have had a great first week at home. We have spent time as a family with our pups, have seen some friends and have enjoyed just being at home. It is such a good feeling! My sister, brother-in-law, niece, and nephew come this weekend and we cannot wait to be together as a family with my mom. We have not been together as a family since before Will's diagnosis so this weekend will be quite the celebration!

Will's blood and immune system is recovering. His bone marrow has rebuilt back to 50% and his hemoglobin and platelets are beginning to increase on their own. It will be a slow process, but we will make sure that he is kept safe with regular outpatient clinic appointments. This morning, he is receiving both a blood and platelet transfusion and hopefully that will do us so that we will not have to come back until next Monday. We have a number of follow up doctor appointments for him but all in the normal course of recovery.

Also, I start back to work today! My company has been so good to me during all of this and has supported me in ensuring that I have the time to focus solely on Will. I cannot thank the team at Greystar enough for stepping up to support me. I love the people I work with and the work that I get to do so going back to work is such a happy thing for me. I am going to work a reduced schedule for the first couple of weeks to ease back into the "real world". I am excited to be back in the full swing of things soon.

To help me move forward, I have decided to not post anymore to Caring Bridge unless there is something significant (which our collective prayer is that there is nothing significant!). For those that would like to continue following Will's story, please find me on Facebook (Jodi Rogers Bearden) as I would absolutely love for you to continue being a part of his story. I am also on Instagram but Jack and Will have "approval rights" over what I post there so that is usually limited.
😊 Will's story is just beginning!!

This community means so much to our family and thank you for all of the love, support, and prayers you have shown to us. I am going to print out each entry and comments from Caring Bridge, so our family has it as a beautiful reminder of this part of our journey. You all have helped to pull us through some tough moments, and I will always be grateful for each of you. Thank you.

Well, with that, I will say goodbye from Caring Bridge. Please do not stop praying for Will as I know that those prayers are the reason we are where we are today.

With tremendous gratitude and love -
Jodi
