We were discharged home last week and the whole family is excited about it, especially our dog Tobi! It has been so nice to have an ounce of “normalcy” again. We have gone for lots of walks (Wes’ & Tobi’s favorite activity), family movie nights, and lots of Weston snuggles (mom’s favorite activity). We will be admitted again this weekend for Weston’s next chemo cycle-but hopefully only for a few days this time.
September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. I haven’t gotten too personal regarding Weston’s diagnosis or the feelings surrounding finding out your child has cancer-it is something I wish no parent would ever have to go through, yet every three minutes a family hears the devastating and earth shattering news that their child has been diagnosed with cancer. Weston’s type of cancer, extrarenal rhabdoid tumor, only accounts for 20 to 25 new cases diagnosed each year in the US. There is no defined standard of care for treatment. Awareness and funding is so crucial for not only rare cancers such as this, but for all childhood cancers. Go gold in honor of Weston and every child that has to fight this unfair fight.
