James’s Story

Site created on June 1, 2018

Our friend, our colleague, our coach, our teacher, and our mentor, James Duncan suffered a massive stroke on the left side of his brain on May 25th. This part of the brain affects movement on the right side of his body, short term memory, speech, and problem solving.

As you can imagine this has been quite a shock for James’s family. They have had their hands full with medical tests, doctors and insurance. They don't know what the total cost of treatment will be or how long James will be out of work, but early prognosis is at least a year or two including significant physical, speech, swallow, and occupational therapy.

James has a long road ahead of him, but we know James has the strength, determination, and faith to recover to his fullest extent. Please keep James in your thoughts and prayers and thank you for your support. Your thoughts, prayers, generous donations and resources to help him heal are sincerely appreciated.

Journal entry by Alfred Duncan

Hello Friends,

James came home from Vallejo July 6 with right arm in sling, four point cane and helmet. He began in home care July 9. After one week, they decided outpatient care was the place for him.

He is currently living with me and my family in Sunnyvale. James continues to have visitors during the week. The weekend is quite busy as his kids stay over Friday to Monday. Sorry we had to stop the meal train as he was on a strict diet. But if you do stop by for a visit, a bag of  Life Savers soft candy and raspberries will make his day.

James has disposed of the right arm sling and the right leg support. He is wearing an ankle brace instead. As for the four point cane its use is for trips outside the home. He has been working with very special people that push him to get better. Being an athlete, they are preaching to James what he would tell his athletes. He is improving every day; he has all three therapy disciplines (SP, OT, PT) each week, plus a lot of therapy homework! It’s the routine.

James health is number one. Getting better is his focus. Keep praying for him. I know he appreciates very much all the out pouring of love on his behalf.
