Wanda’s Story

Site created on September 20, 2021

I've always thought the word surreal was overused, but maybe I've just never heard it used correctly.  I searched the definition of surreal: "having the disorienting, hallucinatory quality of a dream; unreal; marked by the intense irrational reality of a dream." As I write this, there is no other word to be used other than surreal for how we are feeling.  We are quite shocked by how rapidly her situation progressed.  We are  equally surprised by how quickly our friends, family, and community have responded in our time of greatest need.  We are truly moved by each and every one of you that have called, texted, shown up, cooked, cleaned, and PRAYED for us and mom.   We can never thank you sufficiently for your encouraging words.  Though the situation around us is bleak, we are not hopeless.  We have hope in THE HEALER.  He can  do what her body cannot.  We are holding firm to the Word of God right now and all of His promises.
We would like to use Caring Bridge to keep everyone up to date on her progress.  This will also be a great way for Mom to see what all went on with her "while she was sleeping". I will begin with a timeline of her illness so far and will from there update as I receive information.  Please keep in mind that I'm not the "medical sister" and will keep things simple!  Please continue to pray in earnest for her complete healing and check here often.  WE BELIEVE!

Friday, September 3: Mom and Dad exposed to COVID
Monday, September 6: Both test positive for COVID
Sunday, September 12: Mom admitted to Mary Black with COVID confirmed and pneumonia
Tuesday, September 14: Mom moved to the ICU at Mary Black; Prayer vigil with family, friends and medical workers outside hospital. All the grandkids wrote her get well cards and her sweet nurse read them to her.
Wednesday, September 15: On BiPAP
Thursday, September 16: Mom intubated at 7:30am and put into a medical induced coma; Dad was able to speak with her and pray with her and her nurse before being put on the ventilator.
Friday, September 17:  Her friends and medical workers hold another prayer vigil. Dad, Jenn, Britt and myself prayed in the chapel at the hospital and then got to see her through FaceTime with her PA.  Her PA held the phone so we could see her as we prayed over her and just talked to her about how much we loved her!
Saturday, September 18: 3:30am Mom moved to the main campus of Spartanburg Regional ICU.  Went down from 100% oxygen to 50% oxygen. Trialed off of one of the paralytics.
Sunday, September 19: A day of rest! The vent is at 65% and they will not lower anything today in order to let her body rest. Slight kidney issue due to diuretics.
Monday, September 20: Vent at 60% and oxygen levels maintaining in the high 90s. Begin trying to lower sedatives.
