Walt’s Story

Site created on December 19, 2022

Dear Friends and Family of Walt (and Stephanie) - Walt and Stephanie were in Colorado for a brief vacation getaway and Walt had a fall in his hotel room on Monday night, December 12. He suffered a significant head injury, including bleeding and swelling of his brain. He is in intensive care in a hospital in Loveland, Colorado, and his medical team has put him in a medically induced coma so that his body and brain can focus on healing and not diverting any energy away from healing. They have installed several drains within his skull to alleviate pressure from the swelling, and are actively monitoring his blood pressure and other systems to see if his brain is able to properly regulate his systems. While much is uncertain, we think his status will likely hold steady while he is in the medically induced coma.  The doctors are saying Walt will likely need to stay there for a few weeks, and may need longer term rehabilitative care after that. We will keep you all posted through this site so that Stephanie isn't trying to update everyone individually each day. Stephanie sends her gratitude for all the love and support - she is feeling it and so appreciates it. Everyone please keep Walt and Stephanie in your thoughts and send healing and recovery strength and vibes their way! Updates are posted in the "Journal" section whenever there is news to report.

UPDATE from Stephanie!:

Well, it's been a busy few months since Walt's come home.  He has improved so much! Here's a video message from him: https://youtu.be/ApErz797ICY?si=yddzpPc53CFv_Flf.

He is still in a wheelchair, he's not able to walk yet.  He can move his legs and is getting stronger  with physical therapy.  He has some confusion but still has his great sense of humor that you all know well.
Eli and I modified the bathroom sink so he can roll in to shave and brush his teeth.  That felt really good for him to be able to do that.  We'll need to change the shower into curbless as well down the road. Right now it's a bath/shower combo that he's not able to navigate.
I've been Walt's main caretaker with some hired help when I needed to work. It was pretty exhausting.  Apologies for not updating  the Caring Bridge site.  I was trying to keep everything going here. Walt's as stubborn as he used to be.  We have almost daily arguments about him trying to stand up on his own.  We're hoping that will be the case, but his legs won't hold him up yet.
I have found a used wheelchair van that would immensely change our lives. I had held off going in that direction to see if Walt might be able to transfer into a regular car seat ie my van.  That looks like it won't be anytime soon.  The van would allow me to take him to outpatient PT where they have the standing frames and other equipment that isn't accessible in a home environment. It also would give him the chance to get out of the house on little day trips. The van is $16,000.  The link to our GoFundMe is here: https://gofund.me/e12e4c36
If you are interested in contributing any amount towards it I would be very grateful.  Walt's CA disability has ended so he is receiving only SS disability right now.
Stay tuned for information on a gallery show with Walt's photography work. You may not have seen his Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/woodacre_walt?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet&igsh=ZDNlZDc0MzIxNw==

I promise to update this site more.  Life is getting into a little more of a routine and I'm not as exhausted.
Lots of love,
Stephanie
