Vern’s Story

Site created on October 23, 2018

On Sunday afternoon Oct. 21, Pastor Vern took a fall off a ladder. He sustained a significant number of serious but not life-threatening injuries, including several broken bones, internal bleeding, and internal injuries. He remains hospitalized at St. Marys and is receiving excellent care. However, his recovery will likely be a matter of weeks and months, not days.

As you know, Pastor Vern has been transparent about his health issues in the past, and we will continue to keep you posted on his prognosis.

To give him the rest he needs to recover and the medical team space to do their best work, the family requests no visitors at this time. Of course, prayers are always appreciated. If you’d like to send notes of encouragement, we will collect them at the church office and make sure he receives them.

In the meantime, we trust that God’s healing will sustain Vern, Brenda, Erik, and Ingrid, as well as our congregation and staff.

Journal entry by Vern Christopherson

Dear Friends,

I have looked over your entries on the Caring Bridge site.
What an outpouring of encouragement and support!
What a witness to the power of prayer!
What a testimony to the strength of community!
I have been deeply touched by them.

I’ve also been motivated to begin the next phase of the journey for me.
I have started back at Zumbro Lutheran Church part time as of Wednesday, Jan. 9.
It has felt great to see the people and to slowly ease back into things.

As you might imagine, a lot has happened in my absence.
Who knew: The world could go on without me.
And now it is my great joy to discover what some of those things are and to join with others in celebrating the good that comes our way day in and day out.

If you’re interested, here's a link to the note I sent to the people of Zumbro upon my return.

It gives a little more context of what happened along the way.
As with all the letters I write to the congregation, I refer to it as, The Way Things Look from Here.

Thank you so much for being part of my cheering squad and my prayer team.
I would not be where I am without you.

God is good!
