Newest Update

Journal entry by Renee VanTiem

I’m sorry I have not written a post the past 12 days, but I have been battling with insurance issues. Val’s employer insurance expired on May 1st, and we needed to decide should we go with COBRA or find another plan. Val had excellent coverage thru her employer, and I was reluctant to get a lack luster plan that would most likely have I higher deductible and out of pocket, that would start all over. After doing some research of available policy’s, I found it was more cost effective to continue with COBRA until the end of the year, since we have both met our individual deductibles and Out of Pocket Maximum for the remainder of the year. But I could not sign up for COBRA until May 2, that morning I got on-line and paid the premium, and set up automatic payments, we are now covered thru COBRA. But wait just a minute, they must send an email to Anthem to update their system and that process can take up to 3 weeks to reflect that we have coverage. So now the facility that Val is in is telling me she doesn’t have insurance and they don’t want us to get a big unnecessary bill. Isn’t it funny how fast they are willing to let you walk without coverage. So, I showed my receipt of payment and the effective date, that was good enough for them to allow her to continue her stay, but Loma Linda couldn’t verify coverage. Last Friday I called Anthem and was told our policy had been terminated, I explained the situation and they got COBRA on the line, and we were able to clear everything up, but it would take a few weeks to reflect in their system, for any provider to use a reference number to read the notes. LOL. Most of the reps are too lazy to read the notes, so Loma Linda still unable to verify coverage. UGH…. She had been begging me every day to take her home, she would tell me that she could lay in the comfort of her own bed and watch TV and be with me and the doggies every night. She was becoming more and more frustrated with the lack therapy she was receiving and was losing hope in the process. After about 5 more phone calls placed by me, they were finally able to verify coverage on Tuesday, submitted an authorization and they came in on Wednesday and told us she was moving on Thursday to Loma Linda Acute Rehab. Pack her up.

This whole process had me sick to my stomach as I thought we were running out of time with her 100 days in a skilled nursing facility. That sick to my stomach turned into me not eating and getting my dreaded migraine that causes me to throw up and be so nauseous. I will never eat Cool Ranch Doritos ever again.  So now, I had to get all her stuff pack up in my car not feeling good. And return the next morning to finish packing her up. After getting a transport ride set up for her and her wheelchairs to Loma Linda, I had to leave her go to work feeling so sick, I had Rhiannon cancel half of my day. I tried to get some rest before heading over to meet her but to no avail. I needed a driver, thank you Cathy for taking me to meet her and the driver at Loma Linda to get her checked in. She loves this place.  She has an amazing room with lots of space, her own shower and bathroom and a patio with a beautiful view of a waterfall and trees and roses. The food is better, and it’s served HOT (what a concept) and anytime she is hungry she can but in an order. Her spirits are lifted, and she feels REALLY good about being here and is ready to take on the 4 hours of therapy a day.

Today, she had 5- 45 min sessions with Physical, Occupational, and Speech Therapy. She will be given a schedule with times each evening of her therapies for the next day. This is one step closer to her coming home. They will arrange to make sure I have everything at home to take care of her all her needs. And they want me to participate as much as possible.

CocoBean update:  She is no longer shaking, her blood work is back in the normal ranges, she’s back to eating her treats daily and she’s her spunky self, trying to put Olive in her place. However absolutely refuses to go on walks, today I dragged her to the park and she nearly beat me to the front door when I turned and headed home. 🐾🐾
