Journal entry by Valerie Leitch

Two weeks since my last chemo!  It’s so hard to believe and think about all I have been through in the last 6 months.  16 chemo infusions is A LOT!  Along with those I have had more scans, labs, physical therapy appointments, and checkups than I ever imagined possible. I have really had to rely on my faith and the prayers from so many to get me through these challenges.

My family has been amazing and my kids are the most resilient and so very strong. Through all of the challenges we have faced I pray that they become “helpers” to others in need.  They have witnessed the kindness of people that they had never met before.  They have also experienced people you think will always be there never reach out.  Lots of lessons learned through all of this.  I pray we become more empathetic, kind, and understanding.  I want them to always want to be “helpers.”  Our family has a very different perspective these days on what is important and what we should prioritize.

I will be undergoing a double mastectomy on November 6th.  To say that I am nervous is an understatement.  The plan is for a one night stay in the hospital to insure my pain is under control.  I have chosen an oncoplastic surgeon out of Richmond and my surgery will take place at Chippenham hospital.  After surgery, we wait for pathology and my next steps.  I know that recovery will not be a walk in the park.  I will be very limited on what I am able to for 2-4 weeks, no lifting, no driving, no cooking, no cleaning.  This will definitely  be the hardest part for me.  I am so grateful for Chad who will be taking on a lot over those weeks.  He is also prepared to take care of me and all of the surgery aftercare for me.  I think my 3 c-sections has prepared him . The things we have experienced together have only made us realize what we are truly capable of and there is no one else I could imagine getting through this with.

Thank you for everyone that continues to pray, reach out and offer their love and support.  I will never be able to repay people for all of their kindness but I will certainly try.   Keeping this journal had really helped me process all that I am experiencing and I hope that it helps others in some way as well.

Thank you so much to those that have offered to help with a meal and for all that purchased items to help me after my surgery. I know that this will be such a blessing during this time ❤️
