Mike’s Story

Site created on June 26, 2020

Welcome to this CaringBridge website, on behalf of Mike Samuels. I am using it to keep family and friends updated in one place, as we continue to navigate Mike's illness. He was diagnosed with Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD) Behavioral Variant in August, 2017.

If you are interested in learning about FTD, please visit the website for The Association for FTD: theAFTD.org.

Mike and I appreciate your prayers, and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting--Gretchen Samuels

Journal entry by Mike and Gretchen Samuels

Mike's Memorial Service on June 24th was beautiful, heart-wrenching, and filled with love from all the people who came to honor Mike and glorify God. It was such a special day, filled with laughter and tears, sharing memories and hugs. I am incredibly grateful for everyone who was there that day, in person or in spirit. Our family felt your love and we appreciate you all.

For those who are interested, here's a link to a YouTube video with the church service (It's in two parts, one before Holy Communion and one after):

Unfortunately, we didn't get any pictures or video of the reception afterwards, but it was wonderful.

Mike's ashes are resting peacefully in the shade at Seven Stones Cemetery in Littleton, CO. It's a beautiful place to be--a botanic garden filled with natural beauty and a view of the Rocky Mountains. I know he would love it.

At the reception, I shared that Mike had come to visit me in a "vision" or "dream" nine days after he passed away. I woke up in the middle of the night, sat up in bed, and there he was--standing at the foot of our bed, wearing shorts and a t-shirt, looking healthy, fit and flashing his beautiful smile! I asked him, "What do I do?" and he simply said, "Live your life." What a beautiful gift, to know that he loves me enough to want me to go on living...I'm not quite sure how to be Gretchen without my Mike, but I'll try.

Mike's earthly journey is over, but his new life in Heaven has just begun. I know that he wants us all to "Live our lives" to the fullest--with purpose, love, generosity, compassion and urgency, always learning and pointing others to God and His son, Jesus Christ.

"Truly my soul finds rest in God;
my salvation comes from Him.
Truly He is my rock and my salvation;
He is my fortress, I will never be shaken."
--Psalm 62:1-2

God bless you--
Gretchen

P.S. Someone sent a beautiful flower arrangement to the Regis chapel on Saturday, but I lost the card. If you sent it, please let me know, so I can thank you! The flowers were set behind Mike's urn and looked magnificent.
