Patrick’s Story

Site created on February 20, 2023

Hello friends and family of Uncle Pat!

As many of you may have heard, our dear Patrick has recently been diagnosed with AML (acute myeloid leukemia) and he is spending a few weeks at Sanford Fargo in the oncology unit for chemotherapy to get this disease under control and hopefully into full remission. Sharon got him in to the Bemidji ER on February 15th as he had been feeling poorly; and she did so right in time. His immune system had been brought essentially to zero due to the leukemia, and his blood tested positive for streptococcus – based on his bloodwork he was likely hours away from battling sepsis on top of the cancer. We are pleased at the response he has had to the antibiotics, and the addition of the infection did not hold him back from starting chemo right away. While his tests have thankfully been inching towards better, he still has a long road ahead to freedom from his hospital room. Sharon will be visiting him as regularly as she can; weather and roads permitting. Unfortunately due to his immunosuppression, he has a very strict visitor limit (only 4 slots available for the duration of his stay, all of which have already been filled), but he is allowed to receive mail. (Address Below!)
The current treatment plan has him in for about 5 weeks, on a newer BCL-2 antineoplastic drug that seems to be wildly successful when compared to former treatment regimens. We are still awaiting subtype and all the details from tests sent to Mayo, but we will post updates as we know more.

Thank you all for your continued prayers and support.

Mailing Address - Cards or letters much appreciated!
((Just so you all know, NO flowers or plants are allowed on the oncology floor.))
