Trevor’s Story

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting. Here is a brief synopsis of what has been going on for the past few months.

If you know  Trevor, you know he is full of life and energy and loves to be around people. About 6 months ago, he started noticing he didn't feel right. He was struggling with some mood issues as well as low energy, and he just generally didn't feel well. He began working with a doctor, and for awhile things seemed to improve.

In September, he began experiencing digestive issues. He kept working with his doctor, trying new medications and supplements to help, but they couldn't figure out what was wrong, and his symptoms kept getting worse. In November, he started experiencing extreme fatigue and began showing signs of jaundice. His doctor ran blood tests and immediately sent us to a liver specialist because his results were alarming. The specialist told us he was in the early stages of liver failure, which was a shock to us. After ruling out genetic, viral, and other causes and doing a biopsy, she diagnosed Trevor with Drug-Induced Acute Liver Failure. Apparently, one or some of the meds/supplements he had taken to address some of his previous symptoms had caused a great deal of damage to his liver. The doctor is not sure which substance caused the damage at this point, and we may never know what exactly it was. It happened so fast!

Two days before Thanksgiving he was hospitalized because he was struggling to function. When the liver doesn't work, toxins build up in the blood, organs, and brain and can cause a lot of problems. In the hospital, his liver enzymes were extremely high, and they were concerned that there was too much pressure on his brain. He was there for 2 days and then released because things looked like they were improving. However, since being home, his lab work indicates that his liver continues to fail. His doctor has said there is still a chance his liver could heal spontaneously, but at this point that isn't looking likely. He is on some medication to try and help curb his symptoms, but unfortunately there is no medication that can treat his condition. Once the liver is damaged, it either has to heal itself or be replaced.  Because the damage to his liver is so extensive, Trevor may require a liver transplant. Our liver specialist has referred us to the transplant center at St. Joseph's in Phoenix, and we have a meeting scheduled with them in early January.

Currently, we are in a crazy waiting game. Trevor has twice a week blood draws to check on how his liver is functioning, but at this point, the numbers continue to look worse each time. He is always uncomfortable and often in pain. He has no energy at all and even simple things, like moving from one room to another, wear him out and make him feel sick. Yet, he struggles to sleep at night because he cannot get comfortable. We are grateful that he is able to be home with family-his liver specialist continues to be amazed that he's not in the hospital-but it is very hard to see him so sick. We are also waiting on some financial things to be put in place-we are part of a health sharing ministry, but organ transplant has to be funded up front, so we are waiting to see what we qualify for and praying that approval comes quickly.

I (Chelsea) am creating this page so we can update everyone at once. We have friends and family all over, and remembering who knows what information has become exhausting! I will update this page as often as we have news. We are asking the Lord for a miracle-we need Him to heal Trevor. We trust that He knows the best way to do that-whether it's an immediate miracle or through the miracle of a transplant, we know God is sovereign, and we are choosing to trust Him as we walk this difficult road.

We are immensely grateful for your prayers and support. In a dark time in our lives, your encouragement and prayer remind us of Jesus, the Light of the world and the source of all our hope. He can be trusted. Thank you for caring and carrying our family to Jesus. We are grateful beyond what words can express.

Journal entry by Chelsea Bush

We have so many reasons to praise the Lord! He has been so kind to us. Trevor continues to feel great, and his blood work continues to show that his liver is healing. In the past week, his restlessness at night has begun to subside, so he's sleeping through the night much better. Last night we were both able to sleep in our bed all night-something we used to take for granted, but it feels like a milestone now! He still tires easier than he used to, but it is manageable. He is not completely healed, but he is headed in that direction-last week his meld score was at an 11-this week it is at 9. He will do blood work monthly for awhile, and the doctor is going to start weaning him off his meds as well. Last week he also got to come off the sodium and liquid restrictions that he has hated, so we celebrated by going out to lunch! Last week he also went back to work part-time, and this week he's worked a little more. Next week he plans to be back to full-time, and his calendar is filling up again. I have returned to BSF and will go back to teaching and training like normal after our spring break. The boys are getting ready for spring break, and we are back to LIVING again instead of surviving.

We hit a major milestone yesterday-the transplant coordinator called to let us know that the board has officially denied Trevor to be on the transplant list BECAUSE HE IS TOO HEALTHY!! God has truly done a miracle in his body, and we are in awe.

It's hard to believe that it has only been 2 weeks since we were told Trevor probably would not need a transplant. The difference between then and now is HUGE. He is happy and healthy and excited to live and do the things he loves.

There is still healing to be done-now it's mostly things you can't see. When one spouse is sick, your ways of relating to one another change. Trevor and I will need to work through the emotional tangles that have built up as we just survived from day to day. And once that is done, we'll have to work together to find our equilibrium again. Our boys have handled all of this amazingly, but they have scars too. But God is good, and He is sovereign, and He will heal the things that are broken. He has proved Himself to be ever faithful, trustworthy, and good. So we will trust Him to do things in His perfect timing, and we know our relationship and our family will be stronger as we keep walking with Jesus.

I don't pretend to understand why God works things the way that He does-I don't know why He suddenly allowed this into our lives, and I don't know why He suddenly removed it. I don't know why our story has this ending when others' stories end differently. But I know He doesn't waste anything, and He has a plan that continues into eternity, for our good and for His glory. Part of me can't wait to see what He will do next!

I have been blessed to have this site as a way to remind myself of God's character, over and over again. It has served as a place for me to come back to what I know to be true even amid darkness and pain. And I am grateful for those of you who have read it, prayed for us, and shared it with others so they could pray. I pray that it has blessed you as it has blessed me to write it. Several people have remarked on my steadfast faith each time I posted, and I can only say that the Holy Spirit would sneak into my hands and type His words through my fingers each time. He knew I needed to put it in writing so I could remind myself of what is true.

And so this is where we leave you-this will be my last post here. Trevor is heading towards complete healing, and our family is enjoying rest and peace. May each of you know the peace that comes from placing your full trust in Jesus. He is worth your devotion. He loves you so much that He died in your place. His resurrection defeated sin and death, and when you confess that you believe that and trust Him, you get to spend eternity with Him. And not only that, but your life is infused with peace and strength because the Spirit lives in you. He guides you, helps you, and holds you fast. Our story is just a tiny example of the power of God, and our prayer is that it draws you closer to knowing Jesus.

Thank you for your prayers. We are eternally grateful.
