On the afternoon of November 19th, Travis and his 9-year-old son, Jackson, were involved in a motorcycle crash when a pick-up truck turned in front of them. Jackson emerged with only a minor fracture in his hand, but Travis sustained more serious injuries. In addition to a concussion, he suffered bad breaks in his right tibia and fibula (lower leg) and patella (kneecap), a fractured left wrist, and small fractures in his right fingers. He is in VCU’s excellent Joint Restoration Unit, where they have performed multiple surgeries and have begun Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy. He has a long road to recovery, but his faith has remained strong, and his sense of humor is fully intact.

Here are some specific things you can pray for:

- Travis’ pain level, specifically nerve pain in his foot, which is not very responsive to meds
- Encouragement for Travis while continuing to suffer physically
- Improvement in Travis' appetite
- Endurance for Travis’ wife, Esther, as she cares for him and their children (especially once Travis comes home from the hospital)
- Peace and efficiency during the coming weeks, as Travis’ pivotal role in the family construction business will be limited
- Salvation for the 17-year-old driver of the pick-up truck, who Travis has been able to speak with and invite to church

Other ways you can help:

Other than on surgery days, Travis really enjoys having visitors as it helps distract him from his pain, helps pass the time, and is encouraging to him. If you live locally, please consider visiting Travis. In an effort to not have him overwhelmed with too many visitors at once, we have a visiting schedule set up here:

Feel free to text Travis' mom, Robin, at (804) 239-0989 with the day and time you would like to visit to be added to the schedule. Also, the parking and the hospital room are complicated to locate, but there are directions to both on the final page of the spreadsheet.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Robin Schmitt

So, this happened this evening! 😃 Travis said he thinks it was the hardest mile he’s ever walked. Considering he’s only been walking without a cane for a couple of weeks or so, I am very impressed with his effort and progress. Travis is still going to PT twice a week for his leg and once a week for his hand in addition to trying to do PT twice a day at home. His main exercise each day is a bike ride or a walk in addition to some different stretches. All of his hard work is paying off.

Please continue praying for:

- increased strength and mobility

- decreased nerve pain in his foot

- perseverance
