Travis’s Story

Site created on February 28, 2024

Hey everyone! Amy and I are creating this Caring Bridge site as an easy way to get updates out to our friends and family.

As many of you know I have been sick since March 2023. In October 2023, I was diagnosed with Myleodyplastic Syndrone (MDS), which is a bone marrow cancer. On April 3rd, I will be admitted to UVA Hospital in Charlottesville where I will undergo a week of really intense chemo before receiving a stem cell transplant on April 10th. I will be in the hospital for about 6-8 weeks and then staying in Charlottesville for outpatient treatment for about another 6-8 weeks.

Amy & I are so thankful for all the support so far and will continue to need your support in the coming months. On March 4th I made the tough decision to stop working as it was becoming increasingly difficult for me. If you would like to contribute in some way, there is a Ways to Help section where you will find links to an Amazon Wish List as well as my GoFundMe page. We set up the GoFundMe page as a way for friends and family to assist us with bills, medical expenses and all the many costs associated with receiving treatment out of town. If you do not feel comfortable donating through GoFundMe, please contact Amy or myself directly.

Please know that even if you can't contribute monetarily, your comments and words of encouragement are needed and appreciated.

Thank you for visiting!

Journal entry by Travis Barbour

Travis is continuing to do well and is still working on regaining his strength. It's a slow process but he's taking little walks each day and he doesn't seem to be getting winded quite as easily. He is still pretty tired all the time but that is expected. His appetite has been great and there's only been a few episodes of nausea so we are thankful for that! He's really enjoying eating home cooked food that is not from the hospital.

We have been going to the cancer center every morning and we have to get there pretty early (6-7am). As you know, Travis is not a morning person but he hasn't really complained at all. Haha. Hopefully after this week we will only have to go every other day. The doctors are happy with the results of his blood numbers so far. While they are still much lower than normal, they are remaining consistent and not decreasing. This means that his body is beginning to create blood cells on its own! So exciting!!

Still a long way to go but headed in the right direction! Thank you to all for the continued encouragement, love and prayers.

Enjoy this hairless Travis picture! lol
