Tracy’s Story

Site created on September 24, 2021

Hey everyone, thanks for visiting mom's site. I am hoping by doing this I can keep everyone updated in one place. I know mom has an army behind her and it's not always easy to keep in touch with everyone. I'm hoping this will be a way for anyone who would like us to get a message to her to be able to do that too. She really enjoys hearing from everyone so feel free to keep them coming and we will make sure she gets them.

Today we are a month into mom's current condition and up until yesterday we still had more questions than answers...and as much as I would like to tell everyone that we have all the answers, the truth is we probably never will. She doesn't have an exact diagnosis, so I can't tell anyone what exactly is wrong let alone what her prognosis really is. Maybe some day her story will reach someone who has those answers for us, but the neurology team she has at the U of M have never seen anyone with her condition before, and the neurosurgeon who did her surgery has only seen it once in his life and not exactly like moms. To say we have been frustrated while she's been here is an understatement. Rather than the doctors just telling us they didn't know, they told us things based on their own opinions when they really didn't know anything so everything that has been reiterated to pretty much everyone is probably not totally correct and hopefully I'll be able to explain things better now.

Monday mom is scheduled to move to a rehab facility in Red Wing. She has a long road ahead of her in her recovery and we have no idea how much she will be able to do but as long as she won't give up neither will we. To see the smile she still has for the little things in life makes the fight all worth our while. Once she gets there and settled and started on some rehab we'll let everyone know how to find her so you can go visit. As much as we know she loves us, we know she'd like to see other people too.

I'm going to try and tell mom's story for as long as she needs me to as best that I can. I know everyone is wondering what happened and what she has going on, mom wants to know that now too...and I'll read her every entry that gets made here (eventually) so that she knows how her story has been told too, but for now we want her to focus on rehab and getting out of here and she's already anxious about that. We do tell her what's been told to everyone else and obviously she can hear the doctors, but it might not have been said to her in the same context so she doesn't get scared or upset, so please keep that in mind if you're talking to her in the near future.

Her story will be too long to start here so follow her journal entries as I share the road we've been down already and follow the long one that's still ahead of us. We can't thank you all enough for being there for mom and for all of us too.

Journal entry by Teresa Rogney

I know I don’t post much here anymore but I wanted to get the word out to everyone about the benefit some friends and family are throwing for my mom on April 30th at UW wanderoos. The benefit is to help with what it’s going to cost to get her a handicap accessible van and help with housing costs as we are looking to get her into a new place. I don’t have much info to share about it other than that there’s a lot of good stuff being raffled off throughout the day, 50/50 boards, Gun and Purse bingo from 2-6, and a meat raffle starting at noon. I’m planning on bringing mom up too for a little while that day as long as she’s well enough to go.

We’ve been home now for a little over two months and mom is still doing well. She’s had a couple of road blocks to get over but with anyone in her condition it’s expected and we’ve managed to get through them thus far. She’s been working with speech, occupational, and physical therapists with the hopes of regaining some feeling and movement and eat a cheeseburger. Her custom wheelchair is almost ready and soon we’ll be able to get her out of the house much easier and she’s been waiting anxiously for that. We’ll finally be able to bring her to see the spinal cord specialist she’s been waiting to see down in the cities too. She definitely loves being home and out of the hospital and has enjoyed seeing those of you who have stopped by so please don’t be hesitant to swing in for a visit. We hope to see you all on the 30th!
