Tonya’s Story

Site created on January 12, 2024

First we want to thank everyone for the calls, texts, and prayers we have received these past couple of days. We truly feel like God has been walking with Tonya these past few days. The fact that she is still with us is a huge miracle. Tonya had surgery at Baptist hospital on Wednesday to repair a series of fistulas in her brain. While she was in surgery she experienced a mild stroke. They were able to fix the fistulas and deal with a few clots they found. Not long after being taken to Neuro ICU to recover she began showing signs of another stroke. They rushed her to surgery and discovered she had a brain bleed and a massive clot at the same time. As these are polar opposite problems the treatment for one increased the risk of the other. This surgery lasted over three hours and the surgeon has since said there were moments when she felt like Tonya was not going to make it. She survived, but did experience a major stroke. They discovered through all this that she has a clotting issue that she has probably had for a long time. They now believe that is what caused her heart attack in 2019 and the recent fistulas. When they entered the brain it triggered this condition and set off a barrage of clots, thus causing all the subsequent issues. If she does not have any more bleeding, strokes, and/or swelling the next 3-4 days she will be taken out of critical condition. She does not have any movement/feeling on the left side of her body. She has a feeding tube as the left side of her throat doesn’t work. She will be at Baptist another 2-4 weeks at least and is looking at months (possibly years) of recovery. We are devastated, but so grateful she is still here. She has a long road to recovery ahead of her.

Journal entry by Bryan Barlow

Tonya’s homecoming is still scheduled for Tuesday, March 5.😀

There is no rest for the weary, though.  She already has occupational and physical therapy sessions scheduled at the Wellness Center the following two days.  She will be receiving speech therapy at ASU as well.

Her swallowing has improved significantly, so she no longer has diet restrictions.  Her therapy sessions have focused on swallowing, dressing, and improving her core strength, stamina, and the strength of her good leg.  We have both received training and hours of practice on how to transfer to and from her wheelchair safely.

Tonya has come a long, long way but has a tough road ahead.  She has no use of her left arm or leg and still retains a significant left-side deficit, so she does not recognize anything to her left.  She must re-train her brain to consciously look left to read or fully see what is in front of her.  She has also started experiencing phantom feelings in her left arm and leg, such as itches and cold sensations.

We are blessed to have found someone with nursing experience to spend 40 hours a week at home with us, at least for a few weeks, to assist with her physical needs, take her to appointments, and help around the house.

Despite the progress she has made, Tonya is understandably depressed and anxious at times, so your prayers for her mental health as well as physical are undoubtedly welcome as she transitions to this next chapter in her journey.  Thanks again for all your support, encouragement, and prayers.
