In April 2016 Tom was diagnosed with Chronic Myelomonocytic Leukemia (CMML). For the next 3-1/2 years, the leukemia remained in a remission state as he was under the care and seen routinely by his oncologist. In the fall of 2019, blood tests and a very enlarged spleen indicated the leukemia had changed. He began an oral medication that got things back under control quickly. There were a few bumps in the road over the next year, but he felt good and was able to continue to lead an active life. Blood work in May 2021 showed that the disease had transitioned to Acute Myeloid Leukemia. He was immediately admitted to the hospital and began chemotherapy treatments. He continued these these treatments each month over the summer and the disease returned to a remission state. In October he was referred to the University of Minnesota Bone Marrow Transplant Department to see if he qualified for a stem cell transplant for a possible cure. A bone marrow biopsy at that time indicated that he was not in total remission and could not proceed. He had another round of chemotherapy, but his blood levels continued to decline from the treatment. He received several transfusions the next couple of months and his blood levels eventually began to recover on their own. In December, he and his oncologist were considering the next step in treatment.
