Tom’s Story

Site created on July 12, 2023

Well, it's been over 5 years since Tom's stage 4 prostate cancer diagnosis. God is so good and faithful and it's been a wonderful (most of the time) 5 years. We have learned to be thankful for everyday God has given us. It's a pretty awesome way to live. About 3 weeks ago we started a new journey. Tom's prostate cancer has turned into a very rare form and it's UGLY. On July 25 he will be having a total pelvic exenteration- it's a big surgery with about a 6 month recovery.  We are going to use this site to send updates and prayer requests. Thank you for joining us.

The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in Him, and He helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise Him.

Journal entry by Rhonda Hargrove

Hello Friends and Family,

Well, I will start with the great news that we thank God for every day... the trial is working and the tumor is shrinking. THANK YOU JESUS!!!

The reality is that THIS IS HARD!!! The treatment is HARD, eating is hard, everyday life is hard!!! This past month has been hard and we are going back tomorrow for more. Mentally, Tom is ready.

Specific Prayer Requests if you would like to pray with us:

1. We will BOLDLY ask the Lord to heal Tom and take his cancer away.

2. Our oncologist mentioned changing up the treatment a bit. Please pray for her as she chooses what Tom needs and please pray that whatever they decide will be the perfect treatment.

3. Please pray that Tom has an appetite and can eat after the treatment.

4. Please pray that Tom can continue to get back to his normal routine. He is getting pretty tired of the down time. We've watched all the Wheel of Fortune we will ever need to watch.

5. Please pray for me. My church is having something for women tonight called RENEW and it couldn't be better timing. I need a RENEW!!!!

I want to end with a little story of just one of the many times the Lord has shown His face to us so clearly during this fight:

Tom continued to get weaker and weaker after the last treatment and he could hardly walk. I called MDA and they said to go to the ER. Well you know Tom and he refused. He said I should have never called and of course they are going to say that, they have to. Well, after much convincing I finally got him in the car and we were off. He was not happy. It was a Friday afternoon in Houston traffic and in the past we have had 2 very long experiences at the MDA ER. Well, the entire way I was praying that I could find a place to get him out of the car and that we would be seen quickly. There is lots of construction and the ER entrance is being remodeled. The other 2 experiences we waited over 4 hours to get a room. We finally arrived and the circle drive was empty. I pulled up and the nicest 2 men walked out and asked if I needed a wheel chair. They got him in the wheel chair and said they would watch my car while I checked him in. The ER was also EMPTY!!! I asked what was going on and they laughed and said SHHHH don't mess it up. They said they had never seen it like this before. When I got back from parking the car, Tom was already is a room and we both just laughed in amazement and said THANK YOU JESUS!!! HE comes before us!!!!

"The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you or forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged." Deuteronomy 31:8

"Let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith."  Heb. 12:1-2

Love to you all,

Rhonda

We did get away for a few days to Rockport last week. We had an amazing time together. A few pics included.
