Journal

Today is July 27 - exactly 6 months since Thomas's accident on January 27.

Thomas and I wanted to thank everyone for respecting our privacy as we stopped posting so much on here and social media.

In the last few months, Thomas hit a bit of a plateau in recovery and there just wasn't much to update. But I wanted to jump on here and inform all our loved ones on some highlights:

  • Thomas continues to go to physical therapy twice a week, Tuesdays and Thursdays, for two hours each day - 1 hour spent on the leg and 1 hour spent on his hand, wrist, and fingers. And yes, for those who've been asking, he's been back at work! 😊 I added some more photos of Thomas during PT to the photo gallery.
  • He walks independently, with plenty of breaks to rest. His therapists are a bit puzzled by Thomas's pain in his right knee and hip - his right leg starts to hurt horribly when he relieves pressure/takes the weight off of it... they are working on that with him to find a solution or ways to get rid of that painful response.
  • Thomas uses a bone stimulator device every day to help close the gaps in those stubborn fractures that are taking their sweet time to heal back together.
  • His doctors estimate that with continued healing, he should regain all mobility in his right hand, wrist, and fingers by the end of 2019 or early 2020. There was significant nerve damage so it's just taking a long time.

I wish I could just archive this chapter of our life - put it in a big box tied neatly with a ribbon, stick it in a closet, and never think about it again. But we can't.

This accident has forever changed our lives and we have many mixed emotions about it. Thomas experiences pain every day and he's had to change the way he does many things to accommodate with only having the use of one working hand. The accident definitely impacted the dynamic of our marriage (how could something like this not?) and we continue to work on our relationship and work on fulfilling each other's needs. We are convinced that our love is stronger than ever since the accident.

We are first and foremost so grateful. We are incredibly thankful for his incredible journey of healing over the past 6 months, and can't help but think a lot of it has to do with so many people praying to God for Thomas. Prayer is so powerful, and we appreciate every person who included us in their prayers. What a gift.

We are both introverts - although very friendly and social introverts - so sharing what's been going on with a lot of people has been difficult for us. We know they ask with the best intentions. But sometimes, "the accident" and "how is Thomas's healing" is the very last thing we want to talk about. But it has also been a great lesson for us both, as we discovered that allowing yourself to be vulnerable almost always begets connection and intimacy with those around us.

Thank you to our friends, neighbors, coworkers, supervisors, and family members for extending their understanding and support. Thanks to all the doctors, surgeons, nurses, physical and occupational therapists and hospital staff who have worked with us over the past six months. Thank you to our fantastic lawyer, Jeff Paradowski, and his incredible legal team, for fighting on our behalf. Thank you to our amazing siblings and parents for their endless love. <3 This has been a rough year for us and we couldn't have gotten through it without everyone.

Thanks to everyone who cared enough to read the CaringBridge. After six months, we think it's best to bring our CaringBridge account to a close and keep moving forward with our lives. Please feel free to reach out to Thomas or myself to check in - we'd love to hear how things are going in your lives!!

-Molly
