Newest Update

Journal entry by Megan Schonhar

Mom received a round of chemo (gemzar/ abraxane) on Friday, April 5 and another round on Friday, April 19. Her oncologist is content with every other week right now.

Her biggest issue with these chemo has been fatigue, and we are thankful that her GI issues and terrible mouth sores that accompanied the other chemo are no longer affecting her! Her biggest issue right now is regulating her glucose. She is injecting each morning with a long-lasting insulin and then taking short-acting insulin around meals when needed. She is still wearing a monitor that she can scan to get a glucose reading, and it also sends her alerts when she is critically high or critically low. The alarm has sounded several times, and we are glad to now have the tools to assist her and get her feeling better. It seems that this glucose issue is purely related to the cancer in her pancreas.

She had more genetic testing and she was not positive for BRCA. She has a few mutations but no current treatments that target them specifically. Dr. Yang noted that she has a high tumor mutational burden, though, which means that immunotherapy might be helpful as another treatment option down the road. He seems to be happy with where she is right now.

As usual, Mom is fighting the good fight. Last weekend she and Dad threw together an awesome meal as we hosted most of the family for dinner and dessert. They are both currently in the kitchen making another incredible meal- chicken pot pie, asparagus, fresh fruit, and (my fav!) Texas Sheet Cake. Malory is playing 8U softball this year, and Mom is our official scorekeeper. She drove herself out to Greer on Thursday evening to keep score when Dad had to work late. She's the best Grammy! We also enjoyed Easter together and Mom and Dad were able to go to Tennessee to visit her mom (Nana) and sister (Cindy). We've been busy!

Mom is scheduled to have chemo on Friday, May 3 and then again on Friday, May 17. She should also be having another scan in May or June.

Prayer Requests:

  • Complete, miraculous healing!
  • More energy
  • More consistent (and in range) glucose
  • Protection from complications
