Newest Update

Journal entry by Jorie Gerold

It’s been just over two months since Drew’s accident and we’re still getting into the groove of our new norm. Drew is walking and getting around great, and lifting a heck of a lot more than he’s supposed to still 😉 Drew isn’t always the best rule follower and absolutely can never sit still, so having to “take it easy” has been difficult for him!

He still struggles with his double vision that is constant 24/7 and has very slowly gotten better. The nerve in his eye was damaged and there’s not much that can be done besides give it time to heal, and after 6 months post injury there’s a possibility of a surgery that would help, but might not completely get rid of it. So he continues to wear glasses with tape over one side to force his eye to see outward more and reduce the double vision.

He also still has a dissection (tear) in his aorta that’s not getting worse but also not showing as much progress as they’d like to see. He’s had an angiogram to keep an eye on it and will continue on medications in hopes the meds will repair it over time, as well as keeping his blood pressure and heart rate low.

His teeth are repaired which was a big win as it took a few weeks to be completed! However, he still has a large laceration in his tongue that still somewhat affects his speech. You can understand him, but those of us who knew his voice well from before the accident can tell a slight difference. He’s told to continue to wait a few more months for it to fully heal before they will repair or remove the section that is damaged.

He continues to have about 3-5 appointments a week for follow up appointments with physical therapy, neurosurgery, ENT, eye doctors, dentists, etc. He also remains in his neck brace until the end of this month until he is cleared to take it off, and isn’t allowed to drive because of it either. So unfortunately I have become his personal driver plus carting around our little 3 wherever they need to go as well.

If you see Drew walking around, he actually looks really good! And his attitude is definitely back to his old self 😉 He’s doing very well considering only two months ago he was still intubated on a vent in the ICU. He continues to amaze his doctors with his mobility and strength, but beneath the surface he still has quite a ways to go.

We are so lucky and thankful he’s still here with us! And there are truly no words to express the gratitude and appreciation we have for everyone who has checked in, sent cards or donations, prayed for us, etc. We live in an amazing community that has shown us so much support, plus our awesome friends and family! There’s not a chance we would’ve made it through without all of you and from the bottom of our hearts THANK YOU ❤️

Please join us this Saturday October 7th 11am-4pm at the Rock Creek Town Hall! There will be a free will donation meal provided along with a bunch of silent auction prizes and other awesome items to win! Drew hasn’t had a chance to see everyone while laying low since his arrival home, so he’s looking forward to catching up with everyone at the benefit 😊
