Melissa’s Story

Site created on March 25, 2022

Welcome to the Caring Bridge page for Melissa, Teagan, Finn and Harper. They appreciate all the help received so far so, so much - let's all pitch in to get them through the end of June, especially in light of Melissa's recent accident (on top of everything else they are going through right now). Meals, financial donations, household help and the love from their peeps are the things getting them through each day right now.

We wanted to put all the ways their family and friends can help in one spot. If you click on "Ways to Help" above, you'll see links to: their GoFundMe account (OR donate directly to Melissa's Venmo account @Melissa-Disharoon), the MealTrain page for dinners and a Planner (calendar) to sign up for weekday household projects/rides.

It has been a difficult time, to say the least: from Melissa’s December 2021 scheduled back surgery to Scott’s shocking death on December 31, 2021 and Melissa’s accident in mid-March while trying out an electric mobility scooter.  Since the scooter accident, Melissa has been having a lot of pain in her left shoulder, right hand, and neck.  She is having difficulty doing anything around the house and cannot drive to do errands, grocery shop or cook very easily.  She would love help with housework, errands, laundry, or general household organizing. The dinners over the past months have been so appreciated too!

Finances are tough. Because Melissa has Multiple Sclerosis, she qualifies for disability and Medi-Care/Medi-Cal insurance to cover her treatments, medications and maintain her mobility.  To continue to qualify for this assistance, she is limited to earning a very low amount of money each month, so the GoFundMe and Venmo funds have literally been her financial security blanket. She has been carefully managing these donations, but has needed to tap into it a little bit each month. More specifically, the GoFundMe money is going towards memorial costs for Scott, housing expenses, college expenses and high school senior activities (Mira Costa is providing free tickets to Grad Nite and a Costa teacher is helping to coordinate prom tickets at no charge).

She is ridiculously grateful to have been gifted a trip to Hawaii over spring break, assuming she is able to travel. It is not the 50th birthday celebration she envisioned, but will hopefully be a much-needed and peaceful change of scenery.

For those of you who may be out of touch with the family, the one thing that we can assure you is that the family has handled Scott’s death and this accident with incredible dignity, grace and positivity.  They are fiercely loyal to one another as they support each other through these almost unbearable times.  Melissa has felt honored by the kindness bestowed upon her from all of you thus far and will benefit from your continued generosity.

One of her favorite quotes is "The hand that gives gathers." We all know they have given so much to every community they’ve lived in, and I know we are all happy to pitch in where we can!
