Tami’s Story

Site created on May 10, 2023

On March 20th, 2023 my mom began experiencing rib pain and she thought she had pulled a muscle in her rib. March 29th, she went to the ER with intense rib pain that was spreading. During this appointment, she was diagnosed with Anemia and referred to her family doctor. On April 7th, she met with her family doctor who saw a spike in her M protein in her blood work and mentioned that it could be cancer. More blood work had to be done and a bone marrow biopsy was scheduled. April 13th she went in for her bone marrow biopsy and it was unsuccessful so she had to schedule a CT guided biopsy on April 24th. On April 20th, mom’s hemoglobin had dropped and she had to have her first blood transfusion on April 21st. All of these appointments led us to Monday, May 1st where we met with an Oncologist.

Our entire world was flipped upside down when the Oncologist confirmed the diagnosis of Multiple Myeloma. He told us that 90% of mom’s bone marrow was cancerous and she would have to begin vigorous treatment. The Oncologist was extremely optimistic and told mom that she had to be stubborn and strong throughout this entire process. We were told that chemotherapy injections would start on Monday, May 8th and that this would go on once a week for 4 to 6 months. After that, mom would have to go to Rochester Mayo to get a bone marrow transplant. With that news, we headed home. An hour or so after we got home, mom received a call that she needed to go to the ER immediately because her Calcium levels were high. What we thought would be a visit to the ER for the evening turned into a stay until Wednesday, May 3rd. During her stay at the hospital, she had a bone CT done and the results showed pitting of bones and fracture in her left rib. On the last day of her hospital stay, May 3rd, she went through a second blood transfusion. She finally was allowed to go home and began prepping for her first day of chemo on May 8th.

My family will be using this page to keep everyone up to date on her fight and to help support her while she kicks cancer’s butt into remission!

Newest Update

Journal entry by Tami Zakoski

Hi Everyone!  I figured it was time to give an update on how I am doing.  So far so good.  I have completed the first cycle of my maintenance oral chemo, 10mg of Lenalidomide (generic for Revlimid) taking it for 21 days on with 7 days off.  I am now on day 7 of the second cycle.  I had to have weekly blood labs the first 3 weeks and all my numbers have stayed normal which is wonderful because this drug can cause my numbers to drop.

The side effects are frustrating but manageable.  I have found that as each week progresses, I get more side effects.  These include fatigue, constipation, dry flaky skin especially on my eyelids, nightsweats, shortness of breath, a rash and brain fog.  I think the hardest part is going from feeling so well to now having these issues.  However, I am hopeful that my body will adjust and they won't become a problem.

I have a follow up appointment next Tuesday, April 9, with my oncologist Dr. Basu.  We will discuss how maintenance is going and  I will also get my 2nd infusion of Zometa, a bone strengthener.  Last time I felt like I had a mild cold for 3 days after so we will see if that happens again.  Fingers crossed it doesn't.

Otherwise, I've been enjoying life.  We have been anxiously watching our new home being built, celebrated our granddaughter Lizzy's 1st Birthday and received the exciting news that we are going to be grandparents again with Taylor & Jacob due in October.

Throughout this past year, I have had time to focus on what really matters in life and learned to soak in the little moments and celebrate the big ones.  I am truly blessed and will not let living with cancer define me.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Tami
