Tamar’s Story

Site created on April 21, 2021

I am an ER nurse who thought Covid was all I needed to worry about. I found a mass in my left breast the beginning of March, but thought it was hormonal changes due to starting to have some premenopause symptoms. Thankfully, my naturopath and I had our annual (virtual) appointment on March 22, and she encouraged me to get a mammogram. Fast forward to April 6 and the mass is 4cm, and I am told the biopsy showed metaplastic carcinoma - a rare and aggressive type of breast cancer -  less than 1% of all breast cancers. Wait, what? It‘s also triple negative (so it won’t respond to hormone therapy),  and I have the BRCA2 gene mutation, so I have a high risk of getting breast cancer a second time, ovarian cancer, and pancreatic cancer. My family has started calling me the unicorn of breast cancers - sparkly and rare. ❤️ 🦄

Journal entry by Tamar Hare

Seems like now is a good time to end this journal. I am praying and hoping that I never have a recurrence of this horrid disease, so I will have no need of this site again. 🤞🏻

Unfortunately, I won’t be able to have the implant exchange/hysterectomy surgery this year, like I was hoping. Due to staffing and equipment issues at the hospitals it just isn’t possible. I will have to take time off work again in the next year or so to have that done.

But, I am okay with that. I am cancer-free, I feel good, and I am moving forward! Back to work in the ER on the 30th, planning trips for next year, and looking forward to getting back to exercising and having fun with my amazing family and friends.

I have so appreciated your support throughout this journey. Thank you, thank you, thank you. ❤️🦄
