Journal entry by Sylvia Bachmann

On April 18, 2023, I learned that my life would be turned upside down by triple negative breast cancer. And my sweet boy cat Opie also chose that day to finish his time on earth.

Today I am getting my last Keytruda (immunotherapy) infusion (until/unless I have to go through this again in the future.) The nurse asked if I was excited. I said I am pleased, but not exactly excited. They asked if I wanted to ring the bell as some people do when they complete treatment. I said "no thank you," as I feel it may be disrespectful of others in the room who have further to go. Even so, they felt I should be a bit celebratory, so my infusion nurse gave me a quiet hug and a pack of four cupcakes! Not sure why they had these in their freezer, but I am happy to accept them as a symbol of today's milestone.

I have been advised that the side effects of my last dose of Keytruda could take as many as 4-6 months to completely dissipate. I have a follow-up visit with my oncologist here in Massachusetts in mid-May, and have already scheduled my 12-month post-surgical exam for September with my surgeon in Minnesota. (I figure I should give her a chance to see the results of her work, for better or for worse.)

Unless there are more developments, I will likely not continue posting on CaringBridge. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for supporting me throughout this difficult year. I will always carry that gratitude with me, along with my scars.

Love you all,
Sylvia
