Suzanne’s Story

Welcome to our CaringBridge website.

Suzie was taken 911 to the hospital early new years day in distress. She had a breathing tube inserted upon arrival. She was found to have low sodium, potassium, magnesium, blood pressure, and oxygen. A blood clot from her recent surgery was suspected but ruled out.  Her electrolytes are being replenished and she is improving.   They removed the breathing tube, but Suzie became agitated and her throat swelled. It had to be reinserted. They removed it today and so far things look good. If she is unsuccessful with this, they will have to do a tracheostomy, which could be temporary.

So, the plan is for mom to come home today.  Her progress in rehab has been very slow. She has mostly good days, but some very weak days too.  Insurance coverage at this point isnt great.  Dad had a stair lift installed to help mom get up and down the stairs.  And they are renting a hospital bed to help get her up and down and also a special mattress to help heal her sores. The plan is to have home care nursing to do wound care and sodium lab draws. Also therapy at home and an aide to help with bathing.  I am hoping that being at home will help with some of the anxiety she has about getting in her bed.  Her sodium had been holding solid, and they even decreased her salt tablets. However, her sodium started dropping, causing her a lot of weakness.  They upped her salt tabs back up. Unfortunately, this has caused a lot of swelling in her feet, ankles and legs.  They are wrapped for compression, but she doesnt like laying down and elevating them to try to decrease the swelling. The goal is to get her lots of therapy at home so she can get stronger and go to outpatient therapy when she gets better.
