Newest Update

Journal entry by Charlene Devine

Great update ahead! Mom’s last chemo was January 13th. She was so happy to be done and excited to ring the bell! Per usual, she doesn’t feel the best for a couple of weeks afterwards and after each session, it felt a little bit harder to feel better. However, this last stretch was the worst she had ever felt to the point she felt like she wasn’t going to ever feel better. She had a severe cough, extreme tiredness, no appetite and everything tasted horrible when she did eat. She was very depressed. She kept calling her oncologist to see if she should be concerned. Unfortunately, she wasn’t getting much of a response back and made an appointment with her primary doctor 3 1/2 weeks later. Turns out she had bronchitis and was given a couple of prescriptions. Because of this cough, she had to postpone her pet scan to get the results of her chemo. She finally started feeling better and was able to reschedule her pet scan for February 24th and go over the results on March 2nd. Mom got a call the day after her pet scan from her oncologist to let her know that her lungs looked extremely inflamed and was concerned that something more serious was going on and asked her to go get a Covid test. Sure as shit, she had Covid! He thinks it was Covid with pneumonia. Because she tested positive, she was not allowed to go in to meet with her oncologist to go over her results. We asked if we could do it over the phone and he agreed. Long story, short, her scan showed NO MORE TUMORS!!!! Which means no radiation needs to be done!!! Yay mom! That was great news to hear! She will now be going in every 6 months for CT scans with contrast to keep ahead of it retuning which he feels will be, on average, 4-5 years. This couldn’t have been better news! What’s next, you ask? Anal carcinoma! It may be already gone as the pet scan didn’t show any brightness there, but needs to be sure. She will find out in a couple of  weeks. If there is still something left, it can be as easy as removing it surgically as if it were a mole being removed. Stay tuned for that update. With that all being said, she’s still healing from her two back surgeries from early July last year. Her neurologist said it can take at least 18-24 months before she’ll be feeling fully healed. As of right now, she’s “totally disabled” (his words) and is still not able to return to work. She meets with him in mid-July for a follow up. So all in all, really good news! Thanks to all of you for your thoughts and prayers, cards, phone calls, texts and visits. We all love you mom ❤️
