Susan’s Story

 Dear Friends:

2018 is turning out to be a big year for our family. We have celebrated graduation, college and grad school milestones, family weddings, safe travel, and meaningful community work. Our daily lives are made better by those with whom we interact - at our jobs, in our neighborhood, and at church.

We have also begun a new journey. I have been diagnosed with breast cancer and began my treatment this month.

As I have learned, and now know firsthand, there are many types of breast cancer. I have ER+/PR+/Her2- breast cancer, staged at 2a because it has moved into a lymph node from the original tumor. Luckily, it has been found early enough that the doctors have told us it is highly treatable. For that, we are most grateful. My treatment plan -- my choice after tests, biopsies, counsel, research, second opinions, and much prayer--is aggressive. I will have 20 weeks of chemotherapy, followed by surgery and radiation. I have a great team of doctors at the Levine Cancer Institute in Charlotte, and, as you know, I am blessed by the most supportive and wonderful family on the planet.

The odds are high that someone in your family has experienced this disease. Many of us have had very close friends who have walked this path. One in eight women is or will be diagnosed with breast cancer. All of us --our sisters, moms, and daughters-- must be vigilant about screenings. Catching this early is so important. Please encourage all the women in your life to stay on top of breast exams and mammograms. I am grateful to my own local hospital radiologist, whose wisdom at my annual mammogram set me on my path to diagnosis.

I want to thank you all for the incredible friendship and love you’ve shared with me and with our family. You cannot possibly know how dear you are to us. Thank you in advance for your prayers during this time. Please extend your prayers to my dear husband, Alston, and to our children. You all know them as amazing human beings- they are now shining as my amazing caregiving team.

I am a fighter, and with God’s help, look forward to walking this journey with determination and courage. Thank you for your love and support.

Dear Friends:

Wow, how are we already here in February 2020? Miller and I celebrate birthdays this week- always a good time for reflection. It was two years ago today, with a routine mammogram, that my journey began. Many thanks to our daughters for helping me maintain the CaringBridge connection to you.

We want to thank all of you - this great community of supporters and caregivers-  for the love and prayers we have felt since my breast cancer diagnosis in April of 2018. Many have asked how I am doing, so I decided it was time for an update.

Following my treatment (20 weeks of aggressive chemotherapy, surgery to remove tumor and lymph nodes, and 8 weeks of daily radiation), I am happy to report that I had a “clear” mammogram in December 2019 and a “clear” MRI result in January 2020. I am in my 10th month of a 10 year adjuvant therapy plan now -

daily medication to limit the production of estrogen in my body, which will hopefully lower the chances of recurrence for my type of breast cancer (ER+Her2-). I have had no ill effects from this medication and continue to be so grateful for my wonderful doctors and care team.

Candidly, no one wishes for a cancer diagnosis. However, the disease has been a blessing to me in many ways. Cancer has deepened my understanding of (and appreciation for) the value of each minute we live here together on the earth. Cancer reminds us to live life to the fullest, to lift each other up, to share joy and love, and to do our best to make the earth vibrant and sustainable for the generations behind our own.

Your prayers mean so much. Please continue to lift up those who are on their own cancer journeys. It is a lonely path, and can be both isolating and scary. God’s infinite love provides us with courage and strength for the journey. May His wisdom and our faith continue fortify us in the dark places.

To my dear friends from my “Thursday club” and to those beautiful souls whose “gutsy broad” genes are helping them kick this disease to the curb as they live life to the fullest - I salute and honor you! You’ve got this!! Your positivity, faith, and gratitude inspire me.

Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

To those who have lost dear ones to cancer, I join you in daily prayer for peace and comfort. We miss our loved ones so much ♥️ I believe they are with us each day, in our hearts and souls, cheering us on and sharing their love and light.

Many thanks to each of you for your constant prayers and love for us through this journey. We have leaned on your support. We are most honored and humbled by your care and friendship.

May peace and love follow you daily.
