Summer Kay’s Story

Site created on January 21, 2023

So here’s just a bit of an update. About 3 weeks ago my blood pressure started getting higher so therefore I started having more regular checkups and ultrasounds to make sure baby was ok. Every time baby was looking good, but we just could not get my bp under control despite taking meds. On Thursday I had another ultrasound at St. Boniface in Winnipeg, and they wouldn’t let me go home cause my bp was high and as they monitored, it kept getting higher. (At my doc appointment 2 days earlier, the labs came back that I had preeclampsia but it was still mild.) They admitted me and made plans to transfer me to Health Science women’s center cause St. Boniface nicu was full. So Thursday eve found us bumping along in the back of an ambulance, and finally late at night my bp came down and my labs were more stable. They were able to keep everything stable till this morning, (Saturday,) doc came in around 10 and said we need to have this baby to get your body to where it should be and before the baby starts to get affected. Summer was born at 10:47am, January 21.2023, weighing approximately 2.1 lbs, with a little bit of a cry.👶🏼🗣 Alex watched the whole thing and I was able to get a glimpse of her head as they whisked her off to nicu. He then followed them to nicu and the nurses wheeled me back to my room to wait for them to bring the baby for me to touch and look at. I was able to stroke her arm and tiny fingers, and she squeaked for me as they wheeled her away. My mama heart wants to be with my baby.♥️ I’ll likely be in recovery till tomorrow, then hopefully I can go see her again. Alex will probably get tired of me asking him to go check if she’s ok!

Summer will likely be in the nicu till her due date, which is April 18. She is 27 weeks and 4 days old. One of my nurses told me she was born at 26 weeks. Such amazing technology these days!

Summer is over a year now, and she is doing so much better than we ever imagined! Physio and OT was here in November, & they told us that she was meeting all her milestones and they don’t need to come back!👏🏽☺️ She is such a busy happy little lady, getting into absolutely EVERYTHING. I think I find something new everyday to “baby proof”. She crawls into every nook and corner, & pulls herself up on whatever she thinks she can find something exciting to play with. She loves climbing stairs, But most of the time we have to wait till Tato comes home for that to happen. She says “Mama” and “Tata”😍 and has a weird obsession for shoes. She is just getting over her very first cold and I am so very thankful!! It’s so amazing to see how far she’s come! Alex thanks God everyday for a happy healthy baby.🙏🏿👶🏽♥️ And she truly is a BIG little miracle!
