Sue’s Story

Site created on August 27, 2023

How do you start....let me know because I already feel like I suck at it.

I want to firstly apologize for delaying the creation of this site. It has taken us a few days to get all the people where they needed to be, with my mom. Our intention was not to keep anyone in the dark but to ensure we had some clarity before giving everyone an update. Here we are...

My mom had planned her motohome trip back up to MN over the last few months and had finally made her way to the Black Hills earlier last week. She and Jim were able to meet up with good friends out here and were enjoying good food, good company and were looking forward to the amazing motorcycle riding the Black Hills has to offer on Thursday morning. Thursday afternoon around 2pm my mom was 3rd in a line of 4 bikes and while navigating traffic she lost control of her motorcycle and went down. Everyone else in her party was able to safely stop and be with her almost immediately and call EMS. She was intubated on scene and airlifted to Monument Health in Rapid City. She was unresponsive upon arrival and remains so today (Sunday).

CTx2 and MRI are showing multiple skull fractures, some small and one pretty damn large, on the back of her head, diffuse bleeding both in the back and frontal lobes as well as some traumatic injury to her cerebellum. This portion of the brain is responsible for several things...

There isn't another broken bone in her body. Every single organ remains intact and functioning as they should.

Jim has been by her side throughout, being the rock he has been since they met. His children were able to join him within hours to support him and bear the fear of the unknown together while Jesse and I made arrangements for Gma to get up here from AZ and make the journey out to her.

Today we are tailgating at the hospital. Taking turns spending time with mom, talking to Neurosurgery and each other. We don't have an easy, clear path forward...

Moms dogs are with our SD friend-amily :)
Her motohome too.
Her property is being monitored/cared for by more friend-amily in AZ.
THANK YOU A $HIT TON...TO EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU. Your love and willingness to help us is SO appreciated.

I will update here as Jim and myself feel appropriate. ..but please know that injuries like these don't yield leaps and bounds of change and the implications of her injuries are as heartbreaking as they get. As the doctor put it to Jim...we dont measure progress in these situations in moments or days, we measure it in weeks. We love you all, as you love us. Please know that unanswered calls/texts are not intentional but necessary. We are focused on my mom and each other and the unimaginable road ahead of us.

It's been 6 months and today we set you free. In a place you loved, with people you loved. It sucked, it was beautiful, it just "was".

We MISS you. God dammit, how it hurts.

The dogs are doing great. Rusty ate some of your solar lights and a few irrigation lines. You'd have been pissed. It's pretty funny 😁 😂

The desert is full of you. It tears us apart on the inside while on the outside we carry on 💔
