Journal

The days and weeks following Mom's passing have become a bit of a blur, but something worth noting and remembering with a smile is the treasure trove of letters we found. The three of us, PDJ, were at Mom's condo, trying to figure out how and where to even begin disassembling the remnants of our mom's life. Patti, the executor of her will, was rummaging through various boxes of documents and files, when she came across stacks of ribbon wrapped letters postmarked from the 1960's! She started reading them and then called out to us to come listen. These were LOVE letters written between a young Susie Q and her Dougie! Dad was in Dallas, Texas "sent" to live and work with his uncle and Mom was in Florissant, Missouri attending classes at McCluer High School. Patti's discovery drew us to sit down, and over the next several hours of that evening and again the next morning, we read these endearing love letters aloud to each other. What originally started as a very heavy hearted task was instantly given a fresh perspective, newly armed with the knowledge of the sappy love that was shared between our parents, there from day one of the inception of our family. What a gift to know that after all the years, the teen pregnancy discovered during this time that became Patti and two years later, Debbie and a wished for little brother, arriving 5 years later on the very same birthdate as Patti, was the result of star crossed lovers. Their marriage did not last, but the love they had for each other remains....always and forever!
