Journal entry by Sue Andren —
Hi everyone,
Today, Mike and I went to UCLA for a consultation to possibly get on their kidney waiting list. Turns out they have about the same wait as the San Diego area, where I am already listed at Scripps (since August of 2011). The wait time in both areas is about 10 years for a person with blood type O, which is what I have.
The good news is that when a live donor steps forward, I have a better chance of getting a transplant from UCLA because they partner with the National Kidney Registry, which provides a larger pool of donor kidneys. This is in case the donor who comes forward is not a match for me. They can still donate and I would receive someone else's kidney. This is called a paired exchange. About 40 % of the transplants done at UCLA are this type.
Once a donor comes forward, finishes their testing, and is approved to donate, I will complete the workup at UCLA and move forward!
I'm asking for continued prayers for donors to step forward!
Thank you for your prayers and support!
Sue
