Jeremy’s Story

Site created on May 26, 2023

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

First, let's introduce our family.  Jeremy is the oldest of our two sons.  Alex is his younger brother, who is also majoring in Engineering at Dordt University.  I, Sheila Niemeyer, am his mother and will be doing the majority of the posting.   My husband John is his father.

Jeremy graduated from Dordt University with a Civil Engineering degree on May 12, 2023.  He signed a sublease to live with some friends the following day as he had the previous summer.    As a family, we all enjoyed Mother's Day on Sunday, May 14.  Jeremy started his summer job landscaping where he worked both  Monday and Tuesday and needed to rest during his shifts as he was experiencing shortness of breath and feeling more tired than normal.  Unfortunately, he had been experiencing that overall fatigue for a month.  He went to Urgent Care on Wednesday.  A blood test showed a low platelet count and he was told to go to the University of Iowa Hematology Lab for further testing the following morning, which was Thursday.  Thursday evening, May 18,  we received the devastating news that  Jeremy has B Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.  Thankfully it IS a treatable cancer, but we fear that it might be a difficult road ahead for Jeremy.

We met with the University of Iowa Hospital staff on Wednesday, May 24.  Later, that evening he was admitted to the hospital for 21 - 28 days.    Talk about a MAJOR change of events!!  Within two weeks of college graduation, he received the Leukemia diagnosis and became a University of Iowa Hospital patient!!

We pray for a full recovery and for Jeremy to be cancer-free. Please pray for Jeremy, that can still enjoy his summer activities and events with his friends and family.

It was  VERY encouraging at church last Sunday when John shared our sad news with our Sunday School Class and later during sharing time after the church service.   Friends and family gathered and laid hands with VERY meaningful prayers both times.  We feel blessed with lots of support since sharing this with friends and family.

Hopefully, you ALL remember that the power of prayer is quite necessary during such times of uncertainty.  Our family can feel your prayers, hence the title we chose "Strengthened." We chose the verse Philippians 4:13 "I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength."  We have been reminded by several that we will not walk this journey alone for which we are quite thankful.

Jeremy's favorite verse is Jeremiah 29:11: "For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

We are trusting God that Jeremy will be healed from this and stronger on the other side.  Thank you in advance for your prayers and support!!

Newest Update

Journal entry by Sheila Niemeyer

Hello everyone!!  Today is treatment day for Jeremy!!  He continues to enjoy his life in Kansas City.  He celebrated Easter with the relatives we stayed with the weekend he moved out! He has been enjoying learning to know his colleagues personally.  He found a church that he enjoys called Cross Fellowship in Overland Park. There are lots of young adults that attend there, so he has been enjoying that on Sundays.

His most recent monthly treatment went well, and, like previous sessions, he spent the remainder of the day resting.  At this point, it looks like he won’t be working on the days he has his monthly maintenance chemo treatments.

We are VERY thankful that his most recent lab results show that he continues to be in remission.  We can only hope and pray that this continues!

“Do not fear for I am with you.  Do not be dismayed for I am your God.  I will strengthen you and uphold you with my righteous right hand”

Isaiah 41:10
