Steve’s Story

Site created on December 18, 2019

Right before Father’s Day 2019, Dad was diagnosed with stage 4 colorectal cancer. A large tumor was discovered after a colonoscopy. After several weeks of tests his cancer was diagnosed in stage 4 since cancer was found in several lymph nodes in the pelvic area, small spot on liver, and a few lymph nodes around his liver, in addition to the tumor in the rectum. He had a port put in on June 26 and began chemo on July 19, 2019.  A few days into his first chemo treatment he had heart issues and Drs discovered his widow maker artery was 90% blocked. He had a heart valve put in and a month later started back up with chemo treatments. He’s gone through chemo treatments on Fridays. He powered through harvest and has gone through hell with the chemo side affects and doesn’t eat anything but jello and fruit cocktail. He’s lost more than 130 lbs. Fast forward to 6 months. His 6 month scans were completed November 26. Results showed the tumor has shrunk by about 50% along with no cancer seen in the pelvic lymph nodes or liver. Praise Jesus! In addition to the monster tumor, the thyroid has signs of cancer along with a few spots now in the lung and lymph nodes around the lungs. Dad met with the heart Dr on Dec 17 to see if heart can handle more chemo. Next steps will be determined on Dec 20.

It’s still a long road ahead but taking one step at a time. Pray for my Dad, Mom and all of us as we cherish each moment and tackle each step we take! Everyone please get a colonoscopy! Prevention is so important!!!!

Journal entry by Stephanie Vinton-Pollock

September 4th Dad celebrated another trip around the sun...66 years young! My family has always made birthdays a really big deal and this year was no exception for Dad. We see each added candle as a blessing to celebrate!

Since being on the new chemo infusion (I still have no idea the names of the three types of chemo he takes) he’s lost his hair and continues to shrink with losing weight. But on the plus side, he still works circles around everyone. Just last week he was digging up (with lots of help from family and friends) and putting in a new water line as they discovered several leaks to the old pipe that was causing the well pump to constantly kick on. He’s also learning how to AI his sows and is giving the grandkids the full education. I‘d like to apologize now to the kids’ teachers as I’m sure they are telling their classmates all about it. Oh geez!

Dad had a cataract removed from his right eye a few weeks ago. The surgery and healing has gone fantastic. He’s scheduled to get the cataract in the left eye removed on Sept 29. The poor guy has not been able to see, especially at night. His pickup is proof as he’s backed into several things and has dents and holes as proof. They pause chemo the before and week of surgery. So Drs are trying to schedule his treatments around the eye surgery so he can keep on an every two weeks infusion cycle.

Otherwise he’s working hard to beat this and we know he’s working hard!

Mom’s heart tests came back normal so that was a relief. They did adjust her thyroid and blood pressure meds. She had scans done last week and the Dr did find a very large hiatal hernia. She goes in next week for an upper and lower GI scopes to try and figure out why she’s so anemic. Prayers for  answers so Mom can get back to feeling normal! Prayers that Mom will also agree to the hernia surgery as that problem isn’t going away by itself.

We want to thank everyone for your well wishes, prayers, cards, and support! Prayers, faith, and our friends and loved ones are getting us through this!
Thank you all so much!
