Journal entry by Amy Renze —
Steve and Sue bought and moved into their new home across town shortly after Steve’s multiple myeloma blood cancer diagnosis. It was a blessing, and they were able quickly to turn the house into their forever home. One morning two doves showed up and perched on the upper window of the transit at the front door. They were looking inside, chirping, and pecking at the window. They stayed awhile and then they were gone. Every now and then they would reappear in the same spot. When Steve was in the hospital, Brenda (Steve’s sister-in-law) said to Sue, “Look! There are two doves pecking at the window.” Sue hadn’t seen them for a while, and they brought a smile to her face. After Steve was released home from inpatient rehab, Sue told him the story. Steve listened and then said, “Didn’t I tell you? There were two doves outside my room window at St. Luke’s pecking at the glass.” Doves symbolize good luck and good omens. They are also clear symbols of love and peace.
This past month has been a massive transition, a source of empowerment, and a time of growth for both Steve and Sue. Steve continues to heal and has a personal chauffeur at his daily appointments. He graduated quickly from outpatient speech therapy and just this week finished both outpatient physical and occupational therapy. He had numerous follow-up visits (including X-rays, CT scans, labs, and EKG) with his family physician, cancer doctor, kidney doctor, heart doctor, neurosurgeon, and infectious disease. Since the injury, there have been slight differences in both hearing and vision, and these upcoming appointments are scheduled.
Healing from a traumatic brain injury is a marathon, not a sprint. We continue to live in the moment and approach each day as a gift. Steve is working hard every day to regain his independence through strengthening exercises for both his body and mind. Routine and rest are exactly what the doctor ordered.
Steve continues to teach us the most incredible thing about miracles is that they do happen!
