Newest Update

Journal entry by Steve Magnusson

It’s been just over 4 years now since Steven had his first massive seizure and started this challenging journey. Obviously it’s been a while since I’ve posted an update. I wish I could say that things had improved over the last two years but unfortunately things have continued to deteriorate. The cancer is stable (still there but no tumor regrowth) which is a tremendous blessing and for that we are all very grateful! But unfortunately the radiation he had to treat the cancer was incredibly aggressive and continues to impact him negatively and has done irreversible significant damage.  In the beginning his seizures would come every few months, now they come every few weeks. It’s heart wrenching to watch what it does to him.

We are very thankful he’s still able to work for the most part and has an awesome group of coworkers that I know keep an eye on him and have had to witness the negative effects numerous times.  His latest seizure happened last week while a coworker was bringing him home. That coworker carried him inside once it had stopped and the boys and I went into our process, which we normally start with the first seizure. We each have something we do.  Our youngest starts timing, puts the dog out, and opens the door for EMS. I administer meds, and call emergency, the oldest helps me with Steven. Last year the Neurologist finally gave us meds to administer during a  seizure and if we can catch it early it does seem to help. This time it didn’t.  He had five seizures total before EMS could transport him. He usually has issues with his oxygen levels so I am always glad when EMS arrives!  It’s really anyone’s guess as to how bad the seizures will be or the impact afterwards. This time he stayed a day, usually it’s longer.

This coming week he’ll be at the Mayo for impatient seizure monitoring where they’ll try to determine what area in the brain is specifically causing the seizures. Then a team of doctors will review and determine if he’s a candidate for surgery or if different medications may help.  He’s already on a great deal of medication and it clearly doesn’t seem to be helping as we’d hope.

I write all this to ask for your prayers in general for Steven and the week ahead.  Prayers for the doctors to determine exactly what is needed this week in order to reduce the number of seizures he’s having or better yet prevent any future  seizures, so please pray this will be the week doctors know what to do going forward!

Thank  you all!
