Journal entry by Courtney Engelmeyer —
To say that things took a turn in the opposite direction…
Feels like deja vu. All over again.
Here we are… in PICU.
We arrived here Thursday midday.
Steven tested positive for peri influenza when we first arrived for 2nd round of chemo showing no symptoms but a fever. 12 days later, Easter Sunday, he was placed on oxygen to help his breathing.
Thursday April 13th we were transferred to PICU and Steven was intubated and sedated.
After X-rays, CT scans, ultrasounds, labs, tests… simply Steven’s immune system is wiped out by chemotherapy and influenza hung around long enough to rear its ugly head when his counts were ZERO for a handful of days. His lungs were tired, his heart was tired. His body is inflammed fighting off the infection. And as shown by the picture…fluid retention combined with chemo side effects… in a matter of a day fluid decided to find the path of least resistance and sweat out of his back, causing what looks like the worst sunburn and peeling I have ever seen in my life.
I made a post the Wednesday before Easter excited to be able to go home. Constant fever kept us here.
It has been a very exhausting week. And now my sweet boy is getting the rest he needs.
Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers.
One day he is going to ask me about the scars on his head… and I am going to cry while I tell him about the time Jesus carried his body through a battle for life.
And there is nothing he won’t be able to do.
