Steven’s Story

Site created on March 16, 2019

Welcome to our CaringBridge page!

Steven - who has faced life with an eye toward adventure and a love of a challenge – has got quite a different type challenge ahead of him.  Steven has been diagnosed with a rare form of appendiceal cancer that has spread into the abdominal cavity (from a burst appendix), he will be undergoing the HIPEC procedure -essentially a complex surgery and chemotherapy treatment that will give him the best possible outcome and a good prognosis.  The surgery is quite invasive and is only performed by a few doctors. He will be heading to Seattle for a consultation and have the surgery/chemo treatment there on March 26th.  He will be in the hospital for about 2 weeks and in Seattle for 3 weeks.  We will be using the CaringBridge website to keep his family and friends updated in one place.  We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement!  Thank you for visiting!

Steven has health insurance but because this endeavor is a “destination surgery,” he will have a ton of extra expenses that are not covered. To that end a GoFundMe page has been set up for friends and family that would like to help them out with all of those other incidental expenses which are sure to pile up quickly on these newlyweds. Journal entry by Steve Dempsey

Nearing a year from my cancer diagnosis and subsequent HIPEC surgery in Seattle I am so excited to say I am officially in remission. I had my 3 month scan this week and met with my oncologist today to review then results of no evidence of disease. I’ll keep getting scans every 3 months for the the next 2 years but am happy, healthy, skiing, working, and so thankful.
