Steve’s Story

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

Steve was diagnosed with Smoldering Multiple Myeloma about three years ago. Smoldering Multiple Myeloma is not active cancer, but has the potential to progress into Multiple Myeloma which is active cancer. He’s been seeing an Oncologist who’s been monitoring him closely over that time. A few months ago, he began having severe pain in his low back/left hip area. A MRI recently revealed that the Smoldering Multiple Myeloma has progressed into Multiple Myeloma. A PET scan was also done to confirm this. There are four areas that they’ve identified via testing that show active disease and those are all in his lower back, pelvis, and femoral head areas. He recently had a bone marrow biopsy which the bone marrow has been sent to Mayo Clinic for extensive testing to determine which treatment/s would be the most appropriate. Potential treatments include: oral & injectable chemotherapy, radiation, and/or a bone marrow transplant. There may be other options, however that depends on the results of the testing that Mayo Clinic is currently doing on the bone marrow.

*I just wanted to add that we are not asking for any financial donations. I know CaringBridge has a spot where it refers to “donations.” This is referring to the company that owns the CaringBridge website and not the person who the page was created for. If someone were to “donate” it would go to company and not my dad.
Again, we are not asking for donations, I just wanted to let people know because I’ve known of people with good intentions of “donating” to their loved one only to find out the “donation” goes to the company and not their loved one.

Journal entry by Mary Matthys

We just met with Steve’s oncologist. He disagrees with not doing the stem cell transplant because at his age, it would be harder to do it in a few years. He believes this is the best and talked with the transplant doctor/team this morning. So, it’s back on now.
