Steven’s Story

Site created on December 14, 2023

Hello,

Thanks for visiting our page for my dad. I, Emily (Steve's Daughter), will be doing my best to post updates here on this page.

My dad suffered a severe stroke sometime  early Saturday morning December 9th. He was expected to be at his fiancee Kim's later that morning. She wasn't able to get ahold of him so she called my grandparents to go check on him. When my dad didn't answer his door, and they could hear his chocolate lab, Beans, barking, they made the decision to call the police for a welfare check.

The police showed up and broke down his front door. They found him on the floor in the basement and immediately got him on a stretcher and into an ambulance.  They rushed him over to Regions Hospital in St Paul to be treated at their comprehensive stroke center.

They took him straight into a procedure to have clots removed from his neck and his brain. They were able to remove the majority of the clots from his brain and at the time they were able to open up the carotid artery to about 20% open. It has since closed and he will need to be on blood thinners for the rest of his life.

The left side of Dad's brain was affected. This side controls your right side of the body and Dad currently has weakness on this side,  he can still feel sensations but has not moved much on that side. It has also affected his speech, he can say some words but not really full sentences yet.

They moved him to the rehab floor at Regions and he will be going through intense occupational, speech, and physical therapy for the next few weeks.

We're staying positive and praying for a fast recovery!

Newest Update

Journal entry by Emily Clark

I got to see some of Dad's Physical therapy today and got to watch him stand pretty steadily. He's got a blood clot in his right leg that is causing him pain. They are giving him injections to thin his blood and it should clear up in a few days.

Dad got graduated to real food today by his speech therapist. His only restrictions is no water bottles or straws.

Dad was going to get a lot of visitors tonight from Kim and her family to celebrate Christmas.
