Journal entry by Jo Holles

Steveoo's journey came to an end on March 18, 2021.  We were at Ava's House with him. He had stated on March 15, 2021, he told our palliative care Dr. that he couldn't take the pain any more and really needed help. He was sweating and then he kind of passed out.  She got him admitted to the hospital and then the ball began to roll to getting him to Ava's house.  Steve was admitted to room 6259 (our birth years) and I had a peace about being cared for in the hospital. Wednesday, Steve had apple pie with Pastor Kevin--cuz you never know when you might get a chance to eat pie! Steve also gave him a big hug.   He saw his mom, three sisters and myself that day.  He was blessed.  We were blessed by all of the nurses and staff, one young nurse became the guardian angel to Steve.  Anything Kennedy said-Steve would do.  He stopped being able to walk on Thursday and she got him to stay still and okay with being in bed.  Then he said to her you are my favorite nurse for a girl but Andy is my favorite here in Sioux Falls.  She said, you know Andy, he works tomorrow. I'll see if I can get him for your nurse.  Kennedy did get Andy, so that made Steve and me so happy.  So on Friday Jessica picked up Janessa from the airport.  I met JJ at the hospital as they were getting Steve ready for transfer to Ava house.  We got Steve settled into Ava house along with the three dogs. Janessa and I went out to eat and got Steve his last cinnamon roll.  Our dear friends came to see him and they had a great visit.  Janessa and I shared the cinnamon roll and talked.  Then we went to bed.  He slept off and on.  He was alert like this and Nathan drove home to get to us on Sunday early morning.  He saw dad and talked.  Sunday he stopped talking in sentences and he would open eyes to see us.  we were blessed with five days to talk to him and he would react.
Steveoo was laid to rest on March 27, 2021.  After 2 years and 28 days when he first heard you have pancreatic cancer.  We were blessed to walk this journey with him. God gave us those days with him.
Many have cursed COVID, but I have been thankful for it because Janessa and Nathan were able to be with us so much more.  Steve and I were secluded to have our days like little old married couples.   I did curse covid when we didn't get to be in with Steve all together except for the last day.   I was so happy to be able to have his visitation and funeral with our dear friends and family with us.
This is the end of his cancer journey, however I feel his influence and goodness will continue on with people who remember his goodness, some of his humor, and his love for them.  Nathan, Janessa, Kyle, and I would like to thank you for your prayers and kind words of encouragement.  We are not sure what the future holds for us, just like Steveoo knew, we know who holds are futures.  We are praying for answers and guidance.
Love and see you later,

Team Steveoo: Joan, Nathan, Janessa and Kyle
