Steve’s Story

Site created on January 16, 2010

Hi.  I'm Steve.  I was diagnosed with Duodenal Adenocarcinoma on January 4, 2010.  I suffered with abdominal pain all through 2009.  I endured every abdominal test and was diagnosed with IBS.  I was given medication and found no relief.  On New Year's Eve, the pain was bad enough to drive me to the emergency room.  A few days later, I received my diagnosis. This site is to keep my friends and family advised of my progress.  I intend to beat this...with your prayers. My father died of liver cancer when he was 53.  My mother, who is now 72 (I think), has beat cancer many times.  I knew that I was eventually going to have to face cancer, but I never thought I would be 39 when it hit me.  I guess you can say I have a strong family history.  I am worried for my brother and my sons.

Journal entry by Stephen Torres

We wanted to wish everyone a very happy and healthy New Year! Steve is continuing on his journey of remaining cancer free. He still gets very regular screenings, (even if he tries to put them off). Luckily for him he has us to remind him! Or should I say, just tell him what facility or doctor to go to and when. Ha! :) Sadly, we are loosing a valuable member of our healthcare team. He will always be family to us, no matter where his journey takes him. (Yes you Dr. Acosta). But it's ok, because once he gets settled in his new city and practice, we'll pay him a visit...can't get rid of us that easy!
This year Alex began kinder and Jonas entered his senior year. All the more reason to stay on top of Steve's screenings....the kids keep us busy! Steve started to work toward his degree and I began graduate school. Looking back, I guess this is the first year in long time we have been able to breathe a little easier and begin other things outside of doctor appointments.
We are grateful for everyone's  continual prayers. Steve appreciates all the encouraging words he receives from everyone when he runs into you on duty or off. I'd be lying if I said we don't worry anymore about the initial duodenal adenocarcinoma returning or its friends, colon and bladder cancer. We do...everyday. However with time we find we enjoying more moments where it isn't first and foremost in our life.  We will never let our guard down. But as 2015 comes to a close we say thank you for being more gentle on us this year! We know MANY other brothers in fire and PD can't say the same thing. To you we want to say, never give up! Enjoy the small victories for they add up to a big one. Love each other and remember your support system is bigger than you can imagine. We have all your backs like you have always had ours!
Happy New Year!
